Vanderbilt wrap-up: An inexcusable loss, but a loss UA must bounce back from
by Jess Nicholas, TideFans.com Editor-In-Chief

A point of discussion any time there’s a coaching change is how long will the honeymoon with the new coach actually last.

For Kalen DeBoer, it probably ended at 6:48 p.m., Oct. 5, 2024.

That was the point in time that Vanderbilt’s Diego Pavia picked up a first down against a Bama defense fully committed to stopping simple runs. The problem was that Bama was no more capable of stopping Pavia at that moment than they had been at any point in the game prior to that.

A week after beating Georgia in one of the most stupefying wins in recent college football history, Alabama proved incapable of keeping momentum even through a trip to Nashville, which is essentially a home away from home for the Crimson Tide program. All the goodwill, all the excitement over Ryan Williams and Jalen Milroe and an offense that – even against Vanderbilt in a loss – looked pretty unstoppable … all of it is gone.

inexcusable is right.

This is the worst Alabama loss I can recall and I'm getting up there in years now. Losing to Vandy just isn't acceptable - ever...

We were there....the discipline and effort Vandy played with was better than Bama's. This wasnt a fluke, this was a well earned win. Key plays were well-designed, and we could not defend them...they went 12-16 or something like that on 3rd down for a reason. Hard work and coaching beat us today. I hope this humbles quite a few players..Vandy earned this.

Many are bringing up CNS had ULM his first season. Difference is, CNS took over for a team that was .500, this team was a playoff team last year and inexcusable is the only discription.
Not Calling for anybody to be fired, but this is exactly what made CNS special.
I said before the game we will see what CKD is made of today. The team was prepared and beat a top 5 team last week, can he get them focused and prepared against a team that is not nearly as talented afrer a huge win. The answer is NO!

This was beyond inexcusable. Probably the worst BAMA loss I've ever seen, especially to a team like Vanderbilt. I still don't understand the complete lack of performance by the D today, especially at the end when we had a chance to win if we could get the ball back.

Because they were gassed from being on the field all day. They were confused all day, had zero clue what Vandy was doing and stayed on the field over 40 minutes of a 60 minute game. They couldn't physically stop Vandy.

3rd-n-4th Wommack has far exceeded 3rd-n-Kirby and 3rd-n-Golding. Never thought i would see something like that...
To be fair, we came into the game leading the nation in 3rd-down defense, I believe.

I'm just sort of trying to figure out right now what their plan is. Like they're playing base with few adjustments (although we did adjust to the edge running game in 2H) on purpose to drill something in.

They posted that stat during the game. This has all the smell of the coaches not respecting their scheme thinking our talent would win out.

This may not be something anyone wants to hear, but it involves UT losing to the Hogs soon after taking delight in our loss as supporting evidence, so at least that’s something.

Our loss wasn’t a fluke as someone above said, but neither is three top 10 SEC teams losing to the unranked on the same week. As major college ball moves closer to the NFL model, this is going to become more commonplace. The days of a handful of teams dominating are beginning to fade, which certainly affects us to the negative. For any NFL fans here, there are very few truly surprising outcomes in the league. Most all NFL teams come into a game perfectly capable of beating the other on any given day. The parity there doesn’t allow for it and all the PTB in college have obviously wanted to institute it at any cost. It makes for a more lucrative environment that keeps more fanbases invested further into the season.

It’s happening faster than expected in the SEC, but the signs are beginning to show it in the Big 10 as well. There will be a day when a 3 or 4 loss national champion will be the rule, not the exception. It’s different, and it certainly rubs the shine off what used to make the college season so special, but this is what we have.

Today was bad, mainly because a bunch of top flight recruits have been trained to face anything but an offense straight out of 1954. Credit to Vanderbilt to implement a system that can leverage their deficit in talent to take advantage of it. That said, it wouldn’t surprise me if this winds up being our worst defensive showing of the season because of it. Whether that means it’ll be our only loss is anyone’s guess.

No better time for Wommack to "outstrip" Gol*ing's vaunted 1-4-6 with the "Look, Ma, no 'Backers" 4-0-7. What a joke, 'Bama gone from Linebacker U. in a decade to near invisibility at the position. And for an RPO QB who could be seen coming all the way from a year ago at Albrun.

Slowmack needs to be demoted or fired.
That's unforgivable losing to Vandy like that.

Vandy controlled the game from start to finish. I know we have lost by larger margins, and we have lost to lesser opponents than VANDY, but never dominated like that. Just couldn’t catch them. They didn’t flinch.
