Walk-ons earning scholarships

I know that walk-ons are given the opportunity to earn a scholarship down the road. Is this reward at the discretion of the coaches? Or is there a rule that X amount of playing time earns one scholarship? Thanks.

Coaches' discretion. I believe Rudy Griffin and Matt Collins were the latest two guys to earn schollies.
