I was at the game. I did not think we did a good job of going hurry up. Vandy was smart enough to exploit this.
Every couple of plays when we tried to go fast, we insisted on substituting a player or two. When we did, the officials (rightly) would hold the play to give Vandy time to substitute. They very wisely went about it very slowly. They would wait 2-3 seconds to send replacements into the game, the replacements would jog slowly onto the field, then they would line up. The officials would very courteously allow them to get aligned before moving from between the center and quarterback. They usually managed to slow our momentum and burn another 10 or more seconds of game clock. Plus Milroe had often 10 seconds or less to analyze the defense and get the snap off.
I don't think the value of, for example, swapping out a tight end was worth the time.
Overall, we schemed VU pretty well and the offense could have outscored them without the turnovers and the stupid two 2's on the punt business, which was essentially another turnover. And it's a good thing -- with that defense we are going to have to play basketball on grass a lot this season.
