Re: Our idiot Gov. (WV) can't keep his nose out of WVU football hire

I don't think these rumors have any foundational basis, but you never want to hear your beloved coach mentioned for somewhere else, even if you are 99.99999% certain it won't happen.

That said, we're going to have to get used to this. Any time you have a hot commodity as your head coach, and Saban certainly is that, his name is going to continue to pop up for openings. And it's not that I think he wants to leave, but by the same token it is not like he can go into meltdown mode refuting everything left and right every time some Internet rumor pops up.

My guess is that West Virginia will hire a coach within the next ten days, and it will be someone aside from Nick Saban. That will quell the rumors for this year, but they will only go away for an indefinite time. Rest assured that if Saban and our beloved Tide finds a good bit of success next year, and hopefully we will, his name will most likely start popping up for NFL coaching vacancies.

What can I say? It comes with the territory with a highly acclaimed coach. But I think we can all say from experience that having the rumors is a heck of a lot better than having a coach who other schools wouldn't take off your hands if you tried to give him away.

Re: Our idiot Gov. (WV) can't keep his nose out of WVU football hire

Here's an Interesting Article:

Arizona Republic:

Arizona WVU Alum give school 1 Million Dollars
Some people offer that as evidence that WVU is going to pony up the huge money needed to get a guy like Saban, but I don't see it. A one-time donation of one million dollars may seem like a lot of money, but seriously, Saban makes one million bucks about every 90 days. They would need to come up with tens of millions of dollars in order to offer a contract competitive with the current contract he has with us.

That said, don't expect money to play a huge factor in his decision. If money were his primary motivation, he would still be in Miami. I know the LSU goobs love all of the $aban talk, but the fact of the matter is that he was getting paid 5 million per year with the Dolphins, and he came to Alabama and only got 3.7 million this year. Never forget that he took a 1.3 million pay cut, and a lot of Hell from the media and opposing fans, to come to Alabama.

He already has massive amounts of money. That won't be a deciding factor for him.

I agree.

I laugh every time I read about the wife not being happy. When was the last time you heard about a CEO leaving a position because his wife wasn't happy? A wife who lives in the best neighborhood, the best house, is treated like royalty and has unlimited everything. Maybe they are incapable of being happy? Coaches from the past put things like honor and commitment a lot higher up than today's head coaches.

The Loyd Carr to Rich Rod is a perfect example of the contrast between the old coach and the new.

Not only would Saban take a pay-cut, so would his assistants

Oh no! She's desperately unhappy and Bama is a hell hole. Despite what she says, publicly and privately - you just haven't read their boards... :D

Kevin Scarbinsky's column this morning. Re: Saban and WVU

For those who don't get the B'ham News or haven't yet read it, Scarbinsky's column was literally about the fact that Saban won't be WVU's next coach. He talks about how other people (Alabama ex players and Coaches who want the job) are calling him and asking if there is any truth to the rumors. My question is this...WHAT RUMORS? It hasn't been a topic of discussion on this board or other Bama boards to any great degree and it hasn't been discussed by the national media...therefore it begs the question...why would Scarbinsky feel the need to simply write that there is no truth to any of the rumors?

Anyway, I realize it's January 2nd and the stories seem hard to come by today, but to write a column that seems to only try to boost his own ego (by mentioning who has called him and asked him for the truth) this seems like a huge stretch. There may be fan talk in WV about trying to get Saban there but even his friend the Governor said he wasn't going to coach at WVU and that he would be retiring from Bama. In other words...WHAT RUMORS?

My question is this...WHAT RUMORS?
The rumors that people like this create to sell papers and create controversy. Most rumors of this type are created by the talking heads in the media, who then respond to themselves. When this happens to most people, we recommend a psychiatric evaluation. When this happens in the media, they hand out Pulitzers...

I've had a bunch of people ask me if the entire team is transferring to awbarn. I just want to tell everyone that I know for a fact it is not true. Everyone just settle down; it's not happening.

See? I could have my own column in the paper, too.

Got to throw in a bunch of completely irrelevant quotes from the players or coaches, as well as some information from an unidentified source...

alright:

I've had a bunch of players and coaches call me and ask if they are transferring to awbarn. I just want to tell everyone that I know for a fact it is not true. I have an inside source, very close to the program, assured me of this. Knowing this, I was able to tell them "no, you are not transferring to awbarn." Everyone just settle down; it's not happening.

You must have missed subsequent comments regarding the governor's position. Appears that the "rumors" are also being started by WVU.

A WVU team source also said Gov. Joe Manchin is intent on putting a big-name coach in place and has interest in Alabama coach and Marion County native Nick Saban.

Several players changing majors to sociology...

Coach Saban appears to be growing beard...looking like a "mountain man"?

Unidentified source reports JJ seen driving new John Deere

Details at 10.

Re: Kevin Scarbinsky's column this morning. Re: Saban and WVU

The WV guv'nuh called Saban a couple weeks ago to gauge his interest. The two are good friends, apparently. To paraphrase, Saban flat out told him no how, no way. Regardless - even if he was interested (WHICH HE IS NOT!), jumping ship now would catapult him ahead of Bobby Petrino and Saban just isn't interested in having that kind of infamous reputation.

BTW, parts of this info courteous of several unnamed sources close to the situation ;)

First of all just because the paper in WV says that the governor mentioned Saban doesn't mean he actually did! What the governor has said is that he'd like to see a big time coach LIKE Saban take the job but that Saban was extremely happy here and was going to retire here...as has been pointed out. Notice that the ARTICLE NEVER QUOTED THE GOVERNOR.

Lewis Grizzard Admitted To Stuff Like This

It's crap like this that can make a stay in Alabama uncomfortable. Make it up if things are a bit slow...
The late, great Lewis Grizzard admitted in his newspaper biography, "If I Ever Get Back To Georgia, I'm Gonna Nail My Feet to The Ground," that this is EXACTLY what sportswriters do on a slow news day.

He gave the following example (paraphrase):

Suppose it's a slow news day. I call up the manager of the Braves and ask him if there's any truth to the rumor that Dale Murphy is being traded for some prospects. The manager says he's not, so I put out a big headline that says, "Braves Pilot Denies Murphy Trade Rumors," write the quick story, and go to lunch. My job's done for the day.

Still the media, just not in Alabama. WVU would not even think of paying Saban $4M, so logic dictates that they never even considered him an option (unless they are delusional enough to believe that he would take a 50% pay cut). The fact that something ends up in print adds no credibility. What you will find totally lacking in any of these "reports" is a quote from anyone tied to WVU or Saban indicating that he was even contacted.

And the respective governors comments are indicative of their careers as politicians, not any knowledge of the situation. They are saying what they think their constituants want to hear...
