What are some games that Alabama was lucky or very fortunate to win?

I'll throw in one that is not exactly on topic, but how about the Arkansas-Ole Miss lateral-fest ending, resulting in an Arkansas victory and enabling Bama to go to the SECCG? We weren't playing in that game, but our post-season life depended on it and it went our way in spectacular and unlikely fashion. What was that... 2015?

Yes. Interesting backstory to this.

I was at the Alabama-LSU game that night. It had rained all day long, it was terrible - but I was under the awning on the east side. Damn it was loud. But my brother, the news producer, called me while I was sitting there and said, "You will not believe the play Arkansas just pulled!" He gave me play by play and they lined up for the win. He told me they got it and I was SCREAMING at the top of my lungs to the entire section, "OLE MISS LOST! OLE MISS LOST!"

A few seconds later, the score was posted on the scoreboard at BDS, and the crowd went bananas. They were showing the guy from UPS who brought the game ball that night (rather than some guy parachuting in). When they announced his name was when the score was posted, and the place is in an insane scream-fest.

I remember thinking, "That guy is gonna go to work on Monday and insist he got a near standing ovation from the crowd."

Lewis Grizzard was the first I heard with that one, shortly after the game. But even the UGa fan that we was, he knew it was Brent Fullwood, not Bo, that got the ball...
Yeah, I heard that from him first, too, but it's my understanding it was around for a few months before he snagged it for his first comedy album.

My personal favorite, though? "That dog would bite you!"

This is the 'retire the trophy' winner. I was in school at the time and didn't even bother going to the game because it was expected to be such a monumental rout, even though we were down to our third and fourth string quarterbacks. FSU had the country's longest losing streak, as I recall.

Desperate last minute drive and 37-yard field goal by Bucky Berry. Bizarre.
Yep, FSU had lost 17 in a row and we were pitiful the whole game. I was a freshman and was at the game. Ozzie was new to us but pulled us out to get in FG range. Then we were sitting right across from the crossbar and could see that the kick was going to be close. It barely cleared the bar. We were surely lucky to win that one.

I feel like I could simply say most games we played during the Mike's coaching era...especially under Shula. So many of the wins were just outlasting another team who made more mistakes than we did!
Most of the wins in the 2005 season, especially post- Prothro injury come to mind.

Two games in Saban’s first year-

2007 Arkansas- blew a big lead. Thought Jones and McFadden were going to take over. Matt Caddell made a great catch at the end.

2007 Ole Miss- really bizarre ending. Coach O yaw-yawed about it for weeks. Scored 10 points in the final 8 minutes. Then benefited from a replay reversal at the end to beat the Rebs.

2005 Ole Miss- neither team wanted to win. I watched the second half at an Applebee’s in Oxford. I was traveling down 55 to McComb, MS. Had to listen to the first half on the OM radio network which was terrible. Stopped in Oxford for lunch. First of a few heroics for Jamie Christensen that year.

Same mistake a lot of programs make. Trying to find the next great coach they focus on guys that had previously played or coached under an all time great to try and recapture the magic, in Dubose' case the Bear.
Aside from CPB non of our National Championship coaches were alumni. The last coach to win a national championship at his alma mater (unless you really want to push Ed Orgeron) was Phil Fulmer. Between CPB in 1979 and Spurrier in 1996 there were no coaches who won it at their alma mater.

The one I remember most was already mentioned, the 17-16 win at Penn State in 1989 on Rayam's blocked FG. It's the most memorable in my mind because it was a chip shot FG that Penn State is going to make 99 out of 100 times. The players and fans at Penn State were ready to celebrate and suddenly everyone were stunned when it was blocked.

To add something new however I'll mention a couple of games from 2014. After losing at Ole Miss our guys were still reeling a bit when we played at Arkansas the following week and it showed because we barely escaped winning 14-13 by blocking an Arkansas extra point. Later in 2014 we had the 20-13 OT win at LSU but we were lucky it got to OT. Yeldon fumbled late in 4th quarter and LSU had the ball at our 6 YD line. We caught a break when an LSU offensive lineman got called for unsportsmanlike conduct which backed them up to where they had to settle for a FG. We were lucky to make the playoff that season as we could have lost one or both of those games.

The luckiest thing about the 2014 LSU game was their kicker kicked the ball out of bounds.

Not to name all close games and try to select only from CNS's era besides the obvious choices we've already mentioned:

2010 Arkansas game: Ryan Mallet was largely unstoppable until the second half. We trail behind 7:20 at a point. And Dre picked off late to seal the 24:20 win. McElroy remains undefeated.
2012 SEC Championship: trail 10:21 at a point. 5 second left and Murray's pass complete to lose the game :)

2012 LSU. Miles absolutely went conservative on offense on what should have been the game sealing drive, only to miss a FG. Then Chavis gambled on D. You know the rest.
No offence, But we were not lucky or fortunate to win that one. We led the game 14-3 at half time.

LSU then came back to take a 17-14 lead.

Then late in the game Alabama made the plays to Win......They forced a LSU turnover on downs, then they forced a LSU FG attempt from 45 that missed and then proceeded to make the drive to win the game.

It's not like LSU was running the final minutes off the clock and then just fumbled the ball to Bama for a fluke scoop and score.

Alabama earned that Victory.

But since it was brought up, let's roll that beautiful bean footage.....

I’ve always felt that the 2012 LSU and 2013 Auburn games were about the same... the tigers in both games were lucky that Doug Nussmeir was our OC.
