What are some games that Alabama was lucky or very fortunate to win?

As I recall George Teague hustled his butt off to get down field to throw a block which allowed Harrison to score. Had he not hustled the way he did then Harrison probably would not have scored and we very well could have lost the game. I believe it was Stallings (probably other coaches as well) that said in almost every game the difference between winning and losing comes down to 2-3 plays.
Correct.

I've said for years - and before I ever knew Stallings saying it - that EIGHT PLAYS decide a football game. I've tried to finagle it every which way, but there are eight plays/turning points/critical moments in every game that ends in regulation that decide who wins. If all 8 go your way it's usually a blowout. But sometimes you don't know the key play until the game is over, too.

I’ll throw in the 2017 MSU game. On paper we should have destroyed them but Mullen came in with a strong gameplan. Fitzgerald milked the clock on every play, taking up several minutes on each possession. Seems like we only had the ball like 5 times, and we scored quickly which put our depleted defense back on the field. I swear Keith Holcomb missed 100+ tackles that night. This was the pinnacle of “Jalen vs Tua”, and Jalen’s ineffectiveness really showed. We win by at least 3 TDs if Tua plays. Same for the Iron Bowl for that matter. Still mad about that regular season, but I’ll take the title any day.
I sorta forgot about that, too but that's because I didn't see the game live. I had my first post-divorce date that evening with a charming young lady (who was nice enough but a Yankee and not as much in common as maybe the initial match suggested). I left my phone off intentionally, but she had to go to excuse herself after about 2 hours of drinking wine, and I snuck a peak at the phone - and it did NOT look good. I walked her back to her SUV, which she said had not happened in so many years (she was freshly divorced, too). I got in the car and immediately opened the phone.

We had just bailed out.

Bear in mind, my brother turned to me at the LSU game the previous week as we were watching the lines and said, "We're in trouble against Auburn if we don't pick it up." I had the same view but didn't want to express it - after all, if I can see it I know damn well Saban saw it.

But I did watch the replay a few days later and yeah, we kinda got lucky there. MSU outplayed us that night.

Really makes you wonder what would have happened if we lost to MSU. I think Saban would have realized he had to play Tua against the Barn. We most likely would have won that game and beaten UGA in the SECCG. The playoff picture would have been totally different. Ultimately it worked out for us, but it’s interesting to think about what would have happened.

They've had flashes before Campbell, including during that time frame. They were as good as we were that year, as the results on the field proved. I'm not saying they had our talent... just that year 1 under a new coach following the debacle of 2000, we were not in a great place.
Maybe they had flashes but they were generally a dumpster fire. Not to derail the thread but I read somewhere where when Campbell went 6-3 in conference play in 2018. It was the first time in there history they had won 6 conference games. And Campbell did that in his second or 3rd year at Iowa state.

I was actually at that game. I just never saw it as luck as much as inevitable. Mullen always calls something stupid that changes the outcome of the game. I would actually say the 2016 LSU game (at that game too) I thought we were fortunate to get out of because the refs missed a lot of bad calls that would’ve sent us backwards. But then again LSU had no offense to challenge us.

I think the one game that I was at, and probably no one really remembers, that we were really lucky to walk away with a victory was 2007 Houston. The game literally came down to the last play.

Yes, and it's part of why the State folks appreciated the fact he won more than their previous coaches but if he wasn't next-level hard-headed, he could win more.

I can think of some more.

1985 vs. UGA

A classic finish that has been discussed many times on this forum.

1995 vs. Southern Miss

It’s fourth and long around the So. Miss 30, under one minute left in the 4th quarter, and we’re down by 3. Instead of attempting a long FG, CGS elects to go for the win. Brian Burgdorf proceeds to deliver the game-winning TD pass to Toderick Malone!

I caught the end of this one on the radio. Unfortunately, I didn’t watch or listen to it before that point of the game, so I can’t comment on the struggles of the day. Maybe someone here can provide more details. I remember thinking that we should attempt the field goal to salvage a tie. Needless to say, I was quite happy to be wrong!

1996 vs. NC State

A late interception thwarts an attempt at a game winning TD drive for NC State. Final Score: Bama 24 NC State 19.

1998 vs. ECU

A blocked XP attempt returned for 2 points was the difference in this game. Final score: Bama 23 ECU 22. I attended this one, and I don’t remember how we managed to hold on to the narrowest of margins.

1999 vs. Arkansas

We almost had 2 games in a row where we lost on a desperation heave (Let’s not talk about the game that took place the week before this one). Granted, the Hogs would have had to win in OT or perhaps HDN would have elected to go for 2, but thankfully the last play ended the way it did!

2001 vs. Vanderbilt

This one is understandably forgotten because one of the tragic events of 3 days later (9/11).

Bama kicked 4 field goals, Vandy 3, for a final score of 12-9. If I remember right, on Vandy's last possession, QB Greg Zolman dropped what would have been a walk-in game winning TD reception on a throwback trick play. Vandy had to settle for a short FG attempt. The kick was no good, and Bama runs out the clock to limp out of Nashville with a win.

2003 vs. Southern Miss

Yeah, we won 17-3, but the odds were very much against us going into the game. Our staring QB and back-up QB (Croyle and Pennington) were out with injuries, so we were forced to start 3rd string QB Brandon Avalos – a completely inexperienced QB at the college level. So we had no passing game whatsoever to play against a respectable Golden Eagles team. When you take this into account, these were arguably the finest performances by Shaud Williams and that day’s o-line during their time at Bama. We had a blocked punt that we recovered near their goal line which provided one of the touchdowns (the other was a long TD run by Shaud). Southern Miss had a kick return for a TD that was called back for holding. If I remember right, Avalos went 2-7 with one insignificant pick. This may have been the only time he saw action in an Alabama football game. The rest of the play calls were of course mostly inside running plays. Great effort by Joe Kines and the entire Bama defense!

It amazes me that we only had to suffer one loss to the Golden Eagles from 1997-2005 (the last year of the annual series). 2003 was a dreadful year for the program on and off the field, but the win over Southern Miss was one I cherished knowing the circumstances the team had to overcome. Back then I never would have thought that Bama would have a bunch more NCs by 2021.

2016 vs. Ole Miss

We faced a 24-3 first half deficit on the road. Three NOTs made this win possible: Eddie Jackson’s punt return for TD, Johnathan Allen’s long INT return, and Da’Ron Payne’s fumble recovery (with a lucky bounce) and subsequent dive into the end zone. Ole Miss had a frantic comeback attempt which included an onside kick recovery that led to their final TD. Our offense had to get a couple of first downs to run out the clock and prevent a tired defense from coming back on the field. Final score: Bama 48 Ole Miss 43. This win was a credit to Nick Saban instilling a never-quit attitude in every team he coaches!

2020 vs. Ole Miss and Florida

A team is lucky to win any game where the defense gives up 48 and 46 points, respectively. Luckily, we had our best offense ever! Also, I don’t think Charlie Scott gets enough credit for the clutch, unreturnable punt he delivered to pin Florida deep for their final possession. That was about as pressure packed as it gets for a punter. Ole Miss couldn’t keep up the pace with Bama’s offense at the end of the game. A flat start to the 2nd half vs. Florida made it closer than it should have been. RTR!

Several of the ones you listed here don't make my list because I never actually saw them. Most notably the 95 USM, 96 NC St, and 98 ECU games. Or 01 Vandy, although I later got a copy.

Another one folks probably forget is 1987 Mississippi State. Dawgs led, 18-14, with less than four minutes left. Dunn drove us down to fourth and three at the MSU 7-yard line and Humphrey got to the one. He then scored with 46 seconds left to win the game.

MSU was 3-4 and their wins were over ULL, La Tech by one and Memphis by three. They weren't any good at all - and we'd already beaten Penn State and Tennessee while losing to Memphis.

We also had 4th quarter comebacks against UGA and MSU in 1994. Your post about the MSU game from nearly 34 years ago made me realize that we’ve never made a big deal out of beating them. Not even when we beat the #1 ranked Bulldogs in 2014.

You just triggered a memory.

Best friend from HS was in ROTC at Miss State at that time, and he was required as part of his scholarship to work concessions. So since it was the fourth, they weren't doing much, and State took a ten-point lead on us. He said a buddy of his said, "We've got 'em now." My buddy said, "Have you seen Alabama play this year? They've come back in almost every single game to win." He thought his bud there was going to jump off the stadium ledge after seeing us beat them that way.

I don’t have the energy to comment on all of them. I’m not including the 2023 SEC champ game because the offense did what they had to do to run out the clock. That’s not luck, just a clutch performance.

Two more not mentioned in this thread:

1998 vs. Ole Miss - first ever win in OT

2008 vs. Kentucky - A 17-14 win. Gary Danielson accused Antoine Caldwell of holding on Glen Coffee’s long TD run. The defensive touchdown scored by Rolando McClain was one of our flukiest ever. Kentucky scored a TD with under a minute left to cut our lead to 3 and failed the onside kick attempt.

2014 Arkansas - I just remember us playing awful all game and Blake Sims crazy attempt to jump over the pile.

1994 Auburn - If I remember correctly we jumped up 21-7 or 21-0 on Auburn in the first quarter only to keep them in the game and it come down to a 4th down incomplete pass to secure the win.

Yeah, we were up, 21-0, on Auburn in 1994 at Legion Field.

Kinda lucky to win the 3-0 game over LSU in 1979, too.

I'm always "curioius" how these old threads pop back up.

But, if this year's IB isn't only the list the we don't need to have one.

Considering the context of having closed out the season with some pretty impressive wins with the offense finally starting to take form, we laid a proverbial egg in this game.

Considering how we played the next week against Georgia it appeared we basically ran vanilla plays on offense and expected Auburn to lie down.

The luck we had in winning this game is off the charts after the 2 prior plays before it. Not to take away from the throw or catch (nor to judge Freeze's decision to only rush 3 and give JM all the time in the world, which is what he needs), just the odds of needing to make a TD catch with 8 defenders covering the endzone is amazingly hard.

I mean, if we tried it again and they did the same things again you probably don't make that perfect throw and catch 95 times out of 100.

I can’t comment on the other old threads, but I revived this one because I thought it would be fun to discuss the lucky wins of the past 3 seasons instead of participating in the anxiety about the future of the team.

I listed the 4th and 31 game in my last post in this discussion. Which game vs. Auburn was a luckier win: 2023 or 2021? ESPN gave us a 0.1% chance to win late in the 4th in both games. 😃 I thought we had lost in 2021 after our offense failed on 4th and short near the end of regulation. We were lucky to have Bigsby go out of bounds (which Jordan Battle was partially responsible for 👍), convert the 4th downs on the final drive in regulation, connect on the long TD pass to force OT, have Reichard kick a high pressure FG in OT to extend the game, and then win the 2 pt conversion contest!

This is the 'retire the trophy' winner. I was in school at the time and didn't even bother going to the game because it was expected to be such a monumental rout, even though we were down to our third and fourth string quarterbacks. FSU had the country's longest losing streak, as I recall.

Desperate last minute drive and 37-yard field goal by Bucky Berry. Bizarre.
FSU backed up , took an intentional safety late in the game that made the score 7-5 that allowed Berry’s last seconds field goal win the game, as I recall
