My family has had a tradition for the last 20+ years (since my wife and I started dating) of participating in Wreaths Across America. We started doing this at Arlington National Cemetery when we lived in the DC area, and we've continued to do this at the Jacksonville National Cemetary. It's always been a very emotional time for my wife and my MIL, especially when they place wreaths at the graves of those who died in the Vietnam War. I'm sure tomorrow will be no different.

For the week of Christmas, we will travel to North Georgia to stay in a cabin in the mountains. Hopefully, we will get some snow to make it even more picturesque. (Probably no snow though.) It was recently brought to my attention that nearby Helen, GA is a Bavarian-style town that looks particularly cute during the holidays. We moved up our trip to spend a day-and-a-half there before going to the cabin. We'll meet my SIL, niece, and her husband there. Looking forward to a week in the mountains, eating good food, watching Christmas movies non-stop, and spending time with the family.

What are you guys planning?

We always have Christmas Eve dinner at my parents house, then do our family things on Christmas morning (breakfast and "Santa" stuff). This Christmas, I'll spend the afternoon with my fiancee at her house. The day after, we head to Gulf Shores, where we are getting married on the 28th in a very simple ceremony on the beach with my dad officiating. So this Christmas season will be special in a lot of ways.

My family has been grilling out for Christmas for about a decade now. Probably not going to do surf n turf like the last few years. We are a bit broke this year.

My office is eating at Rumi. Personally never been there and I have not decided if I am even going.

I have been to Helen many times. My inlaws have a cabin nearby in Sautee. It is decorated nice for the holidays and is a fun experience in small doses. Just be aware it is a little over commercialized and quite crowded (think Gatlinburg, TN). Cowboys and Angels restaurant is pretty good so is the Nacoochee Grill down the road a bit. I also suggest going to the Nora Mill Grist Mill (good grits, pancake mixes, etc.) and Betty's Country Store is good too. You have to make it over to the Old Sautee Store, very cool place and historical landmark (buy some of the farmers cheese).

My Wyoming contract ends on 12/28, but my last day of scheduled work is 12/24, so IF I AM UP TO IT or there's bad weather headed my way, I will zoom out of the mountains to Casper or Cheyenne and then I will spend all day Christmas Day driving back to Dallas area - because there isn't much traffic on the road that day.

But I'm also heading to Inverness-Paris-London-Wales for 5-20 January with my son, so that's sort of my delayed Christmas. Hoping to attend a Premier League game on the pitch at Ipswich, where I actually got to stand on it when I was 8 years old.

We are going to the house in Destin for a couple of weeks. The water is too cold but we love being down there that time of year. No crowds! We will get some brisk beach time, cook good seafood, play cards, and watch movies. I can't wait.

My wife, who is also a nurse, has to work 7p-7a Christmas Eve. Our daughter is a CT tech and has to work 2p-10p Christmas day. We are going to exchange gifts and have Christmas breakfast after my wife gets home and before our daughter has to leave for work. Hospitals never close.

Back in 2003, I took a Christmas vacation - one week in California and the next (Christmas week) in Tahiti.

While in the check in line at the airport in LA, I met a California family who vacations "somewhere" every year for Christmas. This was their 3rd trip to Tahiti. So as a single traveler....I hung out with them! Not the whole time but we were staying at the same resort so saw a lot of each other.

Mom, Dad, and two adult brother/sister children.

She (the daughter) was nice so we hung out a bit. She had her own business making African Violet pots!

My neighbor is a 30 year retired Army Colonel. Mike and I participated in Wreaths Across America at the Alabama National Cemetery in Montevallo. In the past I’ve gone up to Shiloh National Military Park to participate. A truly moving experience.

Normally, we would have 15+ people coming in here, Monday through Wednesday. Then a big dinner on Christmas afternoon. However, with my mother-in-law and father-in-law’s increasing issues with dementia, that number of people is overwhelming and quite confusing. We have decided to space out some of those visits by relatives over several days.

My daughter had reconstructive ankle surgery here in Birmingham yesterday. She played softball and did competitive gymnastics as a kid. She literally destroyed her ankle ligaments with numerous severe sprains. She will be non weight bearing (in a cast) for the next two weeks. So she (and the 2 year old granddaughter and 7 month old grandson) are with us through next Friday. Her husband will be coming down from Huntsville on Monday.

My son and his family can’t make here from San Antonio this year. His wife is a pediatric CV Intensive Care nurse and will be working over the holidays. My wife and I are planning a trip out there after the first of the year.

Busy? Yeah but just a little more spread out.

Didn't get a chance to post some pics before leaving for Christmas vacation. Catching up:

The ROTC from a local high school was there. This young man is a HS freshman. My wife was moved by his demeanor and spoke with him and his parents. Very determined young man who has his life planned out. No doubt he will be quite successful.
