What Part of No Profanity Isn't Clear?

I just suspended a poster of 14 years standing for a cute attempt around the profanity filters. It was an end-run around an X-rated word, and barely even thinly disguised.

What part of this isn't clear, guys?

- No profanity.

- No cute attempts to circumvent the profanity filters.

- Provided they're truly random numbers and characters (i.e., not facsimiles of the real letters), grawlixes are still allowed. If you don't know what a grawlix is, look it up. I've already explained it multiple times.

- If the word(s) are decipherable through the characters, even a grawlix will provide you no cover.

- If you wouldn't say the word to a Sunday School class of 5th graders, don't use it here.

- If you think the rule is too restrictive, there are endless Bama boards that will welcome you. Go.

- If, after as many warnings as have been issued, you insist on posting profanity, expect a significant vacation. Believe me, today's offender won't be around for a while.

Yes, as many times as I've delivered this message, I'm frustrated. I'm also unapologetic.

How stinkin' hard is this?

I'm guessing it's the 'no' part - some people never seem to have learned what that word meant...
😁
I think it might be, "I'm so valuable / so cool / have such incisive insights / have been posting so long, that I'm bulletproof. They don't really mean me...."

Well, we do. Short suspensions haven't worked, so longer ones are being levied -- even against long-time posters. In this case, 14 years.

I don't want the next step to happen. But if that's what it takes to keep the board clean, that's a choice that the posters make.

Just a quick add: this includes linked content as well. If there is profanity in it, don’t link it.
Thanks, CB. You're absolutely right.

Posters are responsible for what they link. "I didn't know that word was in there," doesn't earn a pass.

It's fine to say something along the lines of, "John Doe has a good video on YouTube regarding [fill in the blank topic]. I can't link because of some language, but a simple YouTube search will turn it up."

If that's true, then the "Funny Blake Sims Story" link should be pulled....

I'm glad my kids weren't around when I listened to it. I wound up turning it off before it was finished...
Well, that one slipped through. I didn't watch the video until a few minutes ago, and we got no reports of inappropriate content through the normal reporting process.

So I treated this post as a report and checked it out. That video definitely should not have been linked, and I have deleted the whole thread.

It's been about two weeks now, so it's a bit hard to retroactively impose punishment this far removed from the offending post.

The OP got away with one here. If it had been caught closer to the posting date, he would have suffered the consequences.

Yeah, I would have reported it if I had known what CB4 stated above. Wasn't sure, so I left it alone.

Thanks for keeping this board clean, 4Q and Mods!:D

Please remember the moderators and admins cannot catch everything, so the "Report" function is everyone's way of letting us know about something we may not have seen yet. If you see something that you know is a violation that has been sitting there for a while, it is probably because a moderator simply hasn't seen it. Use the "report" function to expedite the process.

If you do not know where it is, look at the bottom left of each post.

A big THANK YOU all mods. I can understand letting a word slip out in a conversation, but how do people not watch what they type. i mean we have plenty of time to watch what we say, even if we are "voice typing.".

When I was a new mod, several posters became irritated because they kept their own language clean, but there seemed to be only finger-wagging and repeated warnings for the posters that tried to skirt the rules against profanity.

Well, I didn't want to be viewed as the supercilious knuckle-rapping school marm or the profanity police. But then I read about something totally unrelated to TideFans.

Someone was saying that PGA golfers calling rules violations on their playing partner was being a snitch or a rat. Then one of the PGA golfers said they weren't being snitches at all. Rather, they were protecting the field...the hundred or so other players who weren't around to observe.

IOW, everyone's playing partner makes sure that whatever score they put on their card is earned according to the Rules of Golf -- and when a single stroke can be worth 7 figures, that's really important.

While no posts on TF have million-dollar implications for anybody, I still felt bad.....because I realized I hadn't been as effective as I should have been in keeping the rule-abiding posters from having to wade through dreck that passes for commentary on other boards.

Sometimes stuff still slips through. But it's not for lack of attention by any of the mods.

When I saw/heard it, I thought someone else would report it. I was shocked to see it still up over a week later.

The golf analogy is an appropriate one. Additionally the game of golf, like posting here on this board, is one of integrity, and personal responsibility. The golfer on the course is responsible for knowing the rules, and responsible for calling the penalty on themselves if necessary. It is likewise for us to know the rules for posting here and “police” not only others but ourselves as well.

Thank you for all you and the other Mods do.

I had no idea what that was for. Now that you pointed it out and I actually pressed the button, it makes perfectly good sense.
