Where do we stand? 2/5

Maybe in how we use DT on the field?

They may not put up huge numbers. That is the life of a dl in a 3-4 scheme. Occupy blockers so lb can shoot gaps. A little more than that if you can but that would be your focus. And pushing pocket on pass rush. Hard to get a sack from middle because qb it's looking right at you most of the time. Will flush out (you have done your job)
They are getting drafted and winning championships.
Am I missing something? Serious question.

They are often in nickel formation.. 4-3 90 percent of the time. Only time we go 3-4 formation is against Georgia, LSU and Arkansas.

What would you expect a DT to do in nickel formation?
I guess I am just wondering how bama can employ dt on the field any differently to put them in a better position to succeed? I don't have the answer and I'm not sure there is a way.
Not my complaint read it in thread some where.

Interesting article Andrew Bone wrote... I"m not going to copy and paste it here.... He said that He was still surprised by Malik Langham signing with Florida. and that he heard he was upset by one of the Alabama assistant coaches missing a scheduled in-home visit and Saban was not happy bout that. Guess who missed the in home visit?

Sounds like Bama got what they wanted, but could've done better on DL.

Is the rumor still he (KD), I'm assuming, leaving after NSD? At one time he was rumored to head to NFL

What an odd class. Has who I think are a couple of the very best we've signed in Saban's time here in Anoma and Surtain, and that's obviously saying a lot. But I think we're right to be concerned about some of the misses along the DL, and we're maybe missing a lot of eye popping talent beyond those top two guys (although plenty could be stars - Waddle, Barmore, and Jobe all look really good to me and come to mind); more than that, we left quite a bit on the table this year and maybe even reached on a few guys just to get to 19 - make what you will of that but it's fairly obvious Saban isn't pleased.

Beyond us, what a class UGA reeled in. I wish them all the losses in the world, but what a haul, and it looks like they'll be setting the pace for 2019 as well.

Be interesting to see what we can do next year. A lot of new faces. Problematically though, probably the worst recruiter from the past couple seasons is still on staff...

I always consider the season after a National Championship a mulligan. Who ever transfers, leaves early, signs, leaves for another job, what ever, I am ok with that. You can't win 'em all.

Having said that, Saban's brilliance is well beyond recruiting rankings. Yes recruiting matters, but he's had guys like Jimbo, Dabo, and Meyer all recruiting on a similar level and Alabama manhandled the two of those teams that they played last season. Now, Saban has a really talented quarterback that can atone for weaknesses in other areas. Alabama is in a good position.

Even accepting that though, did we really want the guys who did things like lie about their intentions? Are those the guys you want anyway? Alabama sent a 3 star greyshirt and a walk-on to the Senior Bowl. It's not all about star rankings and even though this clearly didn't go according to plan, I still wouldn't trade this class for many others (I have to admit Ohio State and Georgia's classes are tempting, heh). This just means Saban will have more room for other quality players...

Next year will be the Big Tell. Was this a blip or the beginning of the reconfiguring of the recruiting landscape?

The King will turn 70 before the latest group of kids graduate. He’s now surrounded by younger, equally fierce recruiting specialists at rival schools who in some cases landed players we thought we had.

We can blame the losses on staff turnover, true. But if kids supposedly sign with Alabama to play for Nick Saban and make history, what changed?

Was this a one-time worst scenario or the ticking of the clock?

Kids today are much different than 10 years ago. Fewer who are willing to put the work in....

Also, many schools now wait and see who we pursue and then target the same kids letting us do the detailed dirty work for them.

I believe we got Surtain because his Dad......who is old school and a coach. Too many divas, fewer gym/field rats..... it may be that we are approaching the end of the line....but it’s not because of his age, it’s because society is shifting away from football as entertainment. The next generation never played football, even in their backyard with friends.

I think you can definitely attribute much of it to negative recruiting.......i am sure that quite a few coaches are telling recruits that Saban will retire soon or is too old.......one in particular if the rumors are true.......the same was done to Coach Bryant

I think it's both. I think that going into metro Atlanta and pulling these kids we have been getting is going to be more difficult with Kirby, Dabo, Pruitt, etc. concentrating on those same areas. I think that Mullen, Richt and Taggart will do a good job in Florida, and I think that Jimbo has already made life tougher for us in Texas. The coaching hires made it look to me that we were shifting more to the west with our focus.

That being said, I am totally pumped about the current coaching staff. I think they are going to blow us away moving forward and that the next couple of years are going to be awesome. To lose five coaches at once, both coordinators, and those relationships was reflected in this class, but to finish #7 even with all of that? That shows how good and sustained this program is and it's not going away any time soon.

Still think my criticism of kb is unwarranted or unreasonable?

I get changing you mind at the table. Alabama has been on the other side of a few of those, including a pretty good OT who changed his mind after he left the table. Suggesting that they lied is an altogether different matter.

If you are referring to Kwanjo, then you better do some homework.
His table decision was because of being blackmailed by a scummy recruiter...

Well, if they told Saban they were good to go then changed their mind at the table I guess that's technically a lie but I don't look at it as malicious in this situation. If somebody intentionally misled the staff then that's one thing but I'm not sure that's what happened here..

Your word is your word. If you don't keep it and there are not extenuating circumstances, the you lied. Simple as that.

Kids these days...(shaking my head).

The sky is falling, the sky is falling.

Guys we had limited scholarships, many coaches left us, now we are recruiting against ex coaches. We filled some big holes in my opinion. Next year should be fantastic as we will have more scholarships available and coaches that are sticking around instead of leaving for head coaching gigs. rtr

All I will say is it's not the ones you don't get that hurt you it's the ones you do get. For those kids that balked at the alter it was probably the right decision for our program that they did not commit to us.

Do we have any reason to believe that a competing coach my have encouraged these kids to pull this sort of last second change? If so, and the kid follows through, then all I can say is "wow" at the lack of character and integrity all around. This would seem like we have reached a new low in the recruiting game.

I have often wondered if competing coaches would resort to shenanigans they know coach would never employ just to beat him on the recruiting trail - effectively using his unwillingness to go into the gutter against himself?

Even worse is that it affected other kids and their plans/dreams...
