Who replaces Avery?

  • HELLO AGAIN, Guest! We are back, live! We're still doing some troubleshooting and maintenance to fix a few remaining issues but everything looks stable now (except front page which we're working on over next day or two)

Thanks for your patience and support! MUCH appreciated! --Brett (BamaNation)

I'd take Gene Hackman from Hoosiers at this point. Avery has the same problem he had in the NBA - no player development and even worse, no player respect. It's over. Cronin would be coup if it happens, but whatever we do there is no excuse for this program to be so woefully mediocre to poor for so long. I used to love watching Bama basketball - now I barely check scores.

Bingo! We have a winner!

Looking back through other comments it looks like Avery Johnson has an $8M buyout which drops to either $6M or $4M at the end of April. If that’s true they’ll probably wait until then and hopefully there’s offset language in the contract so if Avery gets the Pelicans GM or another job his new salary would be subtracted from the buyout amount due. If all that’s true then we can spread out the buyout payments over 2-3 years and only take a $1M hit for a few years..
I would predict that, if he leaves, it will be by "mutual agreement," which means the buyout will be negotiated downwards and the terms never made public...

Friend just texted me. Huge Kentucky fan. Said Kentucky Sports radio saying Alabama and Avery will part ways and Alabama’s main target will be Cincinnati’s Mick Cronin.
Of course, this could be the “get your name associated with a possible coaching change & get yourself a hefty contract extension” thing that happens often.

Here is a recent article where Cronin is complaining about negative recruiting over the perception of UC past players. Maybe he wants to come to a place where that perception does not exist. I like this guy but he seems heavily tied to their program.

Before last night I would have given Avery an 80% chance of returning or better. After last night I just don't see how he can. Hall looked as if he could care less whether he was dressed or not, which o.k., sit him and give his minutes to one of the guys coming back next year, but no, they played him the whole game and it was only in the OT that he looked like he woke up a bit. Petty looked like he was afraid the ball was trying to hurt him. Dazon had no business on the court. Only Reese, Smith, Lewis and Jones looked like they could be the core of an actual basketball team. The rest of the team could have actually stayed home. This is completely unacceptable and there is no way it can be explained away.

I don't want to see Avery Johnson coach at Alabama again. And unfortunately, I don't want to see most of those players play for Alabama again.

That makes me think of the Auburn Game when fRan already knew he was leaving.

While we wait for coaches involved in the tournament to finish up, why don’t the powers that be in the AD and BOT reassess what they want to do with facilities. Show the fan base and potential new coach the University’s commitment to basketball by hiring an architect to begin designing a new arena and allow the new coach to have input in the facility’s design. My opinion is that anything less than a 12K seat arena would be foolish since we are averaging 12-13K per game with a pathetically coached team on the court! Why is this so hard for them to understand?

Who do you think did the renovation renderings and all of the construction cost estimates for the various scenarios? I'd be shocked if the various scenarios weren't investigated with hundreds of hours of time by the architect and construction team.

Most likely a schematic design was created and given to either the contractor or a cost estimator or both.

Chris Jans of New Mexico State is the man for the job. He was the top assistant at Wichita State and is given a lot of credit for the development of the players on their 2014 Final Four team. He went to Bowling Green in 2014 and turned them around in one year from 12-20 to 21-12. Then he did something stupid while drunk in a bar at the end of the season and was fired. In 2017 New Mexico State gave him a second chance. He lost virtually every last player via graduation and transfer from a 2016 team that went 28-6. With only one returning starter he lead NMSU to another 28-6 record. This year he lost his two best players to the NBA-D league and they went 30-4. They only lost to Kansas, albeit a weak Kansas, by 2 pts in Kansas City earlier this year. His teams play with passion, rebound hard, and know what they are doing. He is the REAL DEAL. I would absolutely hate to see him leave NMSU but seeing him go to Bama would make it alright. NMSU might very well lose to Auburn tomorrow but it won't be because they were outcoached but rather the talent advantage Auburn has and having a quality coach like Pearl. If you have access to the game watch the NMSU vs Grand Canyon game for the WAC title last week. In particular watch the second half and the speed and effort NMSU plays with.
good call

After reading why he was terminated, I don’t want this guy near our team. I don’t care how drunk you are, no reason to touch a lady inappropriately or force her head towards your crotch. Sorry..... I hope Dr Bell would fire Byrne if he even thought of hiring this Douchebag. I am not claiming to be perfect or almighty but, certain things you just cannot do. No matter how much you had to drink. The fact he admitted being drunk an hour after losing a game says a lot too.

Do we give Pettway a chance? Thought is he can probably be had for $1MM. Let him be a Shula like “caretaker” for 2 years while recovering financially from Avery’s $8MM buyout. Hopefully after 2 years we have the plan in place to rebuild Coleman and go after a big name coach? Or, do you make an offer of $7MM a year to a coach like Few at Gonzaga or Beard at Texas Tech? Likely neither athletic department can match that offer.

Anyone that can coach college kids and is proven to do so.

I think the biggest barrier for Cronin (assuming we send Avery packing & he is a target) would be his strong ties and involvement with the communities in and around Cincinnati. The guy is highly active, involved and beloved by many.
I also believe he is divorced with a daughter that, by all accounts, is the most important thing in his life (as it should be). I don’t know how old she is but many say Cronin would not uproot her from her school and “wouldn’t consider another job until she is out of high school”.

Also it is rumored that he is high on UCLA’s list and even they feel they would have a difficult time prying him out of Cincinnati.

The body language from the players and the performance over the last two months tells me he probably should be relieved but I'm not certain it is a cost we're willing to bear for basketball. The money doesn't want to spend the little bit more to get a real basketball arena, so we're not getting it and the renovation is being pushed back a lifetime in recruiting terms. The money doesn't want to spend 6mil to can a basketball coach.

I think the fanbase wants more but the big monied backers of the AD couldn't give a squat about the sport.
