Progressives need to be patient. Let Biden accomplish his immediate goals and maybe the DNC wins a majority in the Senate in 2022. That would be the opportunity to pursue things like Medicare for All.

Happened to catch her with Jake Tapper this morning. She is an energetic young woman interested in bringing the Democratic political apparatus into 2020 and beyond. The party needs younger more energetic members pushing it forward and engaged in the type of digital campaign efforts that can win local races against Republicans. I know I sound preachy and I don't mean to be, but the Dems can't hope to lead nationally until they compete well on city councils, mayoral races, state legislatures and Governor races. All politics are local.

They do all of that in many states. The deep south and midwest are not interested in the future.

my biggest issue with the young democrats is that they all seem to lack a healthy dose of pragmatism. You can’t change anything if your policies keep you from being elected.

As an aside, here is an adjacent thought I had. Socialism is the new dog whistle like “forced busing” and “states rights.” There is so much wrapped up in the term socialism that it isn’t seen as programs like social security, Medicare, and Medicaid. It’s ultimately the redistribution of wealth to those seen as undeserving. Somehow the US has managed to integrate prosperity gospel into the platform of conservatism and the GOP without actually calling it what it is. Rich people deserve the tax breaks and advantages because they wouldn’t be wealthy if they didn’t deserve it. Deserving it can be wrapped up in whatever philosophy the voter wants to call it. Successful businessman. Man of god. Draining the swamp. This is just the newest term that republicans have managed to convert into meaning more than it really does.

Why did I bring this up after quoting your post? AOC and Bernie both proudly embrace this term and I’m not sure they realize everything that is wrapped up in that term for the 47M people that voted for DJT.

In the South and Midwest, this is very true and why those states cannot have local officials adopt those principals in their platforms. Politicians like AOC think that if it works for them in progressive states it will work for others everywhere in America. It will not.

If she wants democrats to get elected in the south and midwest then she needs to help those democrats learn to leverage social media, but stop pretending that her policies will sell there.

Once enough democrats are elected in those states real progressive reform can happen. Grassroots efforts require local political acumen.

We would likely both agree that Russia, Cuba and Venezuela have never had anything to do with socialism. They are dictatorships where the government seized property and wealth creation under the guise of socialism. It has been effectively utilized by the right to animate those who receive the most benefit of social programs in the US while voting against Democrats who are most likely to work to insure the future of those same social programs they enjoy. All the while the right works to erode these programs while seeking to strengthen the Oligarchy that they strive to establish. Ignorance has long been established as a primary political weapon.

To me she is like pretty much all progressives. They think they are the majority. Personally I think the Joe Biden's of the world sell better than the Bernies. If you want to break the Trump republicans with Democrats then you have to have to sell well organized moderates. Once that Socialism word actually sticks then the hillbillies and rednecks will come out in numbers to vote against you.

I thought this was interesting:
"General Austin is a southerner, has impeccable credentials given his military career and would be an outstanding secretary for the department,” Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-Miss.), a CBC member who is close to Biden, told POLITICO earlier Monday.
I do not know much about General Austin. Some have recoiled at having a retired general as SecDef. I think that's a bit too broad of a brush. I loved Patton as a general. As a SecDef, he would have been a disaster. A retired general like Colin Powell, on the other hand is probably okay, because the guy understands the use of force, but he is broad-minded enough to know the limits on the use of force.

Not exactly high profile, but he wasn’t going to get SOS, and having an experienced diplomat at the UN is probably critical right now. Let’s see what he does with it. Kudos to Biden for nominating the first LGBT cabinet member. And hell, maybe Pete finally brings us infrastructure week.

Regardless of whether Democrats are entirely pleased with Biden’s picks — can any one Cabinet meet the Goldilocks requirements of just the right diversity, just the right experience and just the right chemistry? — party members know they need to keep one eye on the future. In 2028 — if not 2024 — there will be a sea change in the array of possible presidential contenders. And in Buttigieg, Democrats can envision one such a top-tier candidate who will be more seasoned, more fully formed in the post-Biden years than he was in 2020.

Buttigieg may find himself in the thick of everything, from climate change and emissions standards to racial equity to infrastructure on the Biden agenda. (And given the short tenure of some White House nominees, Buttigieg may “move up” to even higher-profile roles as other secretaries exit their posts.) The job “could provide an opportunity to make a lasting mark,” The Post reports. And just as important, if confirmed, the perch would give Buttigieg a chance to make a positive, lasting impression. Real excitement in getting the chance to watch a promising career unfold surely explains a good deal of the enthusiasm over his selection.

I think he has the chance to do a lot in this role, now that I've slept on it a bit. Biden just needs to put him in front of a camera.
