Who will be the UT coach

You and Ivan Maisel are kidding yourselves if you think the UT job is not a top notch gig. Dont let your hate for UT make you look silly.

We all know about the tradition at UT, they are the SEC's #2 team. And I do mean that as a compliment. But what I think fireater and Maisel mean is that the UT job is not a top notch job right now. The state of Tennessee does not have lots of talent, and UT has been down the past few years. In order for UT to compete y'all are going to have to find a coach that can recruit nationally. But what available coach meets that criteria?

I expect Cutcliffe to be interviewed. That's probably who Phatso will recommend so he'll at least get the courtesy. I expect that he won't get the job. I expect they'll pursue Gruden through his agent, at least, since he has some UT/Knoxville ties, but I don't expect that to go much of anywhere. Skip Holtz, maybe. They might ask Texas Tech for permission to contact, though I agree with those who say he would be out of place here. My expectation is that they'll try to find someone with major college head coaching experience first. They should get someone. Hard spot to coach or recruit or not, it pays well and the facilities are good. That counts for a lot.

Of course, I hope it's Tubbs....

I agree that this is not a good time to be looking at 'top notch' candidates. Be prepared to be disappointed.

Whoever takes the UT job will be walking into a grinder. There will be a lot of impatience looking for a quick fix and that will be a tough chore for anyone. UT has some talent but not much team spirit, UT has a lot of tradition and early playing time to offer recruits plus a chance to start with a new regime. I would love UT to return to the UT I knew before Fullmer and hope they find someone we can respect. I don't mind losing a game now and then to someone I respect that is what made each Tennessee loss the last decade or so intolerable.

Cutcliffe has got to be on the short list. I don't think it will be a quick search though.

They'll run through the normal "big" names trying to lure one in.... Leach ain't going ANYWHERE in the College ranks with a #1 team. The bud is off the rose at Kansas with Mangino. And Gruden? Ha. That guy is 110% NFL.

There will be a push to stay "in the family" since Fulmer is only the 3rd coach in nearly 40 years but I think the cupboard is fairly bare.

As for outsiders, honestly, it wouldn't surprise me if Franchione gets a look. Ball State's Brady Hoke is going to make several short lists this off-season as well.

My guess is Chavis gets the nod and a short leash.

Gundy would be an interesting choice. Dunno if he'd come, though. But if he did, you'd get a two-fer in that Trooper Taylor would likely return with him.

I agree with the posters who say Clemson gets first choice. SEC money and fan base but without SEC competition.

Don't understand the man-love for Spurrier on some Vol sites. He'd rather be golfing.

Gruden - Forgeddaboudit.

Butch Davis - Everyone's darling. Good catch if you can get him, but I don't know why he'd leave a good situation in NC to jump into the SEC furnace.

You won't pick Cutcliffe. He's been second-fiddle twice now at Tenn. Not a bad choice IMO, though.

Kiffin gets some press, but I don't know why some folks are so excited about him.

Muschamp or Steele would be interesting choices.

Whoever comes would want assurance that Fulmer is truly OUT OF THE PICTURE. Assuming Tenn is going to make a coaching change, orchastrating a graceful exit by Fulmer is essential. You don't want another Johnny Majors pot-shotting from the sidelines. In fact, that oughta' be a stipulation in Fulmer's buy-out.

Whoever it is will also likely face discipline issues. Tongues have been wagging for quite some time about CPF's leniency in certain areas. The new coach will need to quickly put the house in order. CNS had to face these issues on a smaller scale and it created quite a bit of media stir. Getting rid of the "UThug" label will require more than just a good X's and O's man, but is definitely needed.

UT is a good SEC school I think they will likely get a very good coach. With Tajh Boyd as a highly ranked duel threat QB committing to UT makes me wonder if Fulmer and the UT AD might already know the replacement. I look for maybe someone that coaches a spread offense.

Are you referring to Tony Franklin? haha

Franklin?:)

I think Cutcliffe gets it in the end.

if foolmore had paid more attention to tennessee football the last decade as opposed to worrying about everyone else, he may still have a job at the end of the year...that 'secret witness' stuff comes back to haunt in the end...I just wish he had stayed for another year or two so we could have given him a little more payback...

I love Kevin Steele as a DC, I really do. But I don't fear losing him at all. I really don't understand why anyone would want him as a HC. His teams at Baylor were awful. I know some will say "no one can win at Baylor" but other HC's have done very well at other "baylor like" places. Spurrier at Duke, Grobe at Wake, Johnson at Vandy. Etc. Steele did nothing at Baylor to show me that he is ready to runa program. Maybe the last couple years with Saban have helped but I don't see it. For what its worth, him being at UT wouldn't make me nervous at all. Though he is an excellent recruiter and would certainly get better talent at UT he is just not a great HC imo.

his record at Baylor:
Year record conf
1999 Baylor 1–10 0–8
2000 Baylor 2–9 0–8
2001 Baylor 3–8 0–8
2002 Baylor 3–9 1–7

yes, that's right 1 conference win in 4 years. And that was not in today's big 12.
