Yep. In 2016 Jalen was named SEC FOY and we thought we had a Heisman trophy QB in 2017 but he regressed with his passing and the scramble out of the pocket and throw it away.

I don't even think Hurts really regressed in his abilities, it's just that with enough film, and room fulls of analysts, teams started to figure out what they could show him to force certain decisions. They'd do that, but then knew what decision they were forcing so would scheme behind it. They baited him basically. The issue was that he had a hard time getting to the next read, or adding to that read sequence or breaking that read tendency. He clearly was able to get it all right eventually...

All very true, but he also had zero confidence throwing from the middle of the field over to the left sideline. Essentially, for 2+ years, he was only a threat throwing to the right third of the field. Defenses barely covered the left side of the field because they saw this on film, giving them the ability to move players into position to take away the other things.

Once Jalen developed the necessary confidence to make those throws and trust his receivers, he became almost impossible to defend.

People are just stating what they have seen from him in the past and based on past history these are the issues they possibly see with Milroe as starting qb.
Like others, based on past evidence, I can't see him ultimately being our starter.
However, if the young man has made lots of progress and shows he can lead this team and play well then thank GOD.
What most of us are simply saying is that the proof is in the pudding.

Last year doesn’t count. He was thrust into playing after Young got hurt, and wasn't really prepared. He's worked on holding the ball with 2 hands in the pocket, and is passing well in practice. He likely won't be a 70% passer like we've enjoyed during the Tua/Mac/Young run, but he should be OK. For Milroe and the whole team, I hope the pudding gels before the 'horns come to T-Town.

Yes, this exactly. This is the point I've been missing, when talking about Hurts' passing. Thanks for this. You're an ok dude for an Ohio St guy. 😉

So, if last year doesn't count what are we supposed to use to determine if we think JM can be a good qb? Just because he can run?
He's been in the program how long now? He's supposedly ( and I don't doubt the report ) worked with the receivers and such over the summer. Practiced with the team in '22 in the spring and fall, had this spring and fall practice to practice. At some point you have to get out on the field and prove it.
I will give this caveat: BOB didn't do any of these qbs any favors because I don't believe he spent any time trying to develop a backup and don't think he even had a back up plan.
Again, nobody on here is really saying he can't be a good qb, per se, but that he will need to prove that he can be.

We have faith in the coaches. They're the ones analyzing and grading the players. If they say Milroe is the QB, then I support and cheer him on. If they say Simpson is the starter, then I support and cheer him on. It will have to be proven, regardless of who the quarterback is. You talk like Milroe is the only one who has to prove himself. Besides, Saban, apparently, doesn’t want us to know who the starter will be. Not yet. So all we can do is speculate and discuss. I'll be glad when it's game time and all this speculation is done. Whoever the starter is, will deserve our support. They've all worked hard.

On this we can 100% agree. The best QB should be who starts.
I also agree that CNS is probably playing mind games with the rest of college football in all this qb stuff.

Of course it counts. It's the price of being the #2 and getting the PT when BY went down.

It counts that he showed off what he can do with his legs. Does that count?

It counts that he showed his accuracy/passing game needs work. That counts too.

But none of this matters (his struggles last year) if he shows he's improved, but we just can't forget last year and act like the shortcomings weren't real.

And until JM shows he's really improved there's also the possibility that he's just NOT struggling as much as Buchner or Simpson. Obviously, we all hope that's not the case but until we see him do it in a meaningful setting, we don't know.

I just meant it's not fair to be so critical based on basically 1½ games under the situation as it was last year. I mean, even Mac Jones, after throwing 2 pick sixes and losing the Iron Bowl, didn't get this level of criticism.

There’s a difference though. It was obvious in 2019 Mac was going to be special. Milroe has shown us nothing so far.

Because Mac was very precise and efficient the week before, he otherwise had a great day passing amidst the voodoo funk at the pasture, and he followed it up with a near perfect game in a blowout against Michigan.
