This has been discussed in different threads, so I didn't know which one to put it in.

With Greg leaving after this year, AJ and Simms will be the only schollarshipped QBs left on the roster. Yet, people on here seem to think we will not get a QB this class. Why? We saw not too long ago what lack of QB depth will do to a team. I know numbers will be tight this year, but do we honestly wait until 2012 to get two QBs? One of which is reportedly a good baseball player that is being scouted by the MLB (or so I've heard). I know Winston seems to be a lock, but why wait another year for him?

Why would we not go after a guy like Stephen Rivers or another "project" that Coach McElwain could develop?

Isn't the other major issue here to the small recruiting class that we will be able to pull in due to numbers? I am not willing to venture a guess whether we will pull in a QB, but it just is not an immediate need. Obviously it could be, but that's the reason Saban is the best coach in America and I'm not. With the imposing lockout on the NFL that will further crunch the numbers, but in a good way.

It's a difficult situation. Obviously, you never ignore the QB position. We had a shot at some top dogs, but, I've heard many were scared off by McCarron and Sims. They know there is a good chance they will sit for 3 years.

If there is room, we will get someone. It is difficult to think that only two scholarshipped QBs would be on campus, but it would be an enticing bit to a 2012 QB recruit.

I'm going to predict that there will be a QB for 2011, either a solid HS 3 star like Rivers, a JUCO QB or a capable walk-on not known about yet. My opinion is that any other option puts a championship season at serious risk for 2011 and maybe 2012. At a minimum there needs to be a solid game manager ready to go if McCarron and Simms go down.

RTO, what do you think the chances of the room being there are?

That's my fear. I don't want another Brandon Avalos in charge. I'm sure that situation would have been different if Coach Saban was here, but I don't want to find out.

My take:
So, the controversy is that we would then only have 2 scholarshipped QBs in 2011?
Let's say McCarron and Sims both get injured. We need a third QB. Our options: a middle-of-the-road-talent true freshman QB with a month or two with the team OR a lower level talent redshirt JR QB with four years with the team (Ogilvie)
Is it worth giving an essential four year scholarship to a guy who would only be expected to contribute in an obscure scenario for one year, and might not even do as well as a walk-on already on the team?

If it's a guy with starting potential, I could see it. But, if we're just talking about a potential third stringer for one year, I'd say find another walk-on.

If the staff feels good about Winston, all the more reason. I don't like having only two scholarshipped QBs, but I understand the staff's view if they don't get one.

I'll say this guys I forgot we have Blake Sims on the team too. If need be, he could play some.

I still feel that we should get somebody. We got a 3* star QB out of Texas a few years ago. He's worked well for us. Why not give a shot to a player to give us some security at the position?

Two scares me, I have stated this on another site. UCLA played with their number three I think last year or the year prior. The number one went down in the spring, number two in the summer. I think we had it bad a few years ago playing South Carolina without a true QB. I feel better with Blake Sims if he gets cleared, and takes some snaps in the spring for the number three spot.

1. Final class has not been determined or signed...don't jump the ship.
2. Evidently a top-level QB is on line for 2012. We don't need one before then...

It's still awhile before signing day. Don't know exactly who we might be keeping our eye on, but there's plenty of time for a QB out there to "strut his stuff" this year, and make an impression on CNS & staff.

On the subject of QBs, this caught me by surprise. Chris Garrett is leaving LSU after his redshirt year.

It appeared we went after him pretty good. Don't know if there's residual interest or whether he's destined for a Mississippi school.

Link.

LSU only cleared him to go to MSU, but it's unlikely he goes there. He'd have to sit out a year, plus he's a bad fit for that offense. He was interested in MSU back when Croom was there.

I imagine he'll transfer to a smaller school in Mississippi or Louisiana.

Garrett was hardly on anyones radar for much of his career. I saw him play a couple times in HS. Watched him for the first time his Jr year vs Clinton and it was clear he had the tools. However he absolutely isn't a polished passer, reminds me a lot of Kevin Fant from Moss Point that attended MSU.

On that note I think there are 2 type of '3 star' types a staff will go after. Kids like Garrett/Fant which are not polished or really even fully developed as passers and kids like McElroy who are polished but perhaps don't have the experience/competition level to garner a higher rating.

He was being looked at by Alabama before he enrolled early at LSU. If I'm not mistaken, his father was quoted in a Mississippi newspaper as saying that Coach Saban asked him to think about delaying his enrollment, and take a look at Alabama.

I believe it is the case that Garrett was let go or his scholly was not renewed by LSU. That is what is being reported. If that is indeed the case then why would Bama want him? If the Bama QB talent caused Star Jackson to leave, it will take a really talented, extremely confidentl QB to come in this year and be able to compete with A.J. McCarron and Phillip Sims.

Kinda like how when someone steals a recruit out of LA.. he was never that good in the 1st place and Les "pulled" his offer just before he commited or he never had one in the 1st place..... normally you don't find out about a kid having his scholarship not renewed...

I think the reason for no QB this year is that all the good ones are already verbally committed to play elsewhere. I don't think CNS spends a scholly on a guy who is marginal and will probably never play.

In the event AJ AND Phillip Simms go down to injury in 2011, my guess is that Blake Sims will be the emergency QB. I've seen him play. He's an amazing athlete but a so so passer. With lots of reps, coaching up, studying film and simplified game plan, he could be a very serviceable back up QB, even though he's really a WR on the team. Think David Palmer years ago.
