If you had only one choice, who goes, Pete or BoB?
Pete easy. We win every game this year with a better defense this year. Pretty much every year against every real offense the defense gives up a lot of points. I am not counting Ole miss year in and out cause going on 4th all the time kills them.

Pete is considered a top 10 DC by most that rate these things. We are always comparing him to those who came before him.

I think he tried to do what was asked of him. To try to build a defense to compete with basketball on grass.

the re-emergence of TEs in the game, along with some teams moving back to smash mouth has left us vulnerable against some.

now we are stuck between two types of offense in our league.

UT, State, OM, and Auburn who play fast and tempo.

Arkansas, UF, USCe and Mizzou who do both

A&M, UGA, LSU, Kentucky, etc who play slower and more methodical.

it’s a tough job. And you have to change schemes by game. And sometime your personnel doesn’t allow it.
Yes he was tasked to build that. How ever the result is such a poorly coach defense with a scheme that is honestly terrible. The talent of players is the only thing that has saved him. That is being nice. He can't coach a position group much less DC. He has proven to take away the edge defender against teams and it seems like waits for Saban to make in game adjustments not himself. The man has even used two Dlineman in goal line situations which says enough. Saban has let him probably put the biggest mark as a DC on the defense. But the secondary problems are still all on Saban. The argument stuck between different types of offenses is bad when players are so poorly coached and the scheme is just simply bad. A base defense can't be 2-4-5 and be dominant. Pete should not be a position coach here much less DC. Saban should adapt his secondary or let others coach it as well. So I will give up Pete before O'Brien cause we would at least score. Granted Young will be gone so maybe not.

And this is where I think Petey Pie fails miserably, especially considering the overall talent we consistently have run through this program. Ever since he has taken over, we routinely give up "gash" and "chunk" types of plays at the absolute WORST times of the game. In the most crucial parts of games, we cannot get the defense off the field for one reason or another. Good coaches find ways to get the job done with what they have to work with, and it's not like Petey is working with second rate players.

The 2-4-5 while unsound likely was used because we had so many top flight linebackers that we were trying to get them PT to keep them happy. It has not worked.

Meanwhile, UGA is experimenting going 5 wide with TEs at each position because they see what the NFL is doing with TEs.

Imo, we have to get more physical on offense. The tempo teams in the SEC are not going to win the SEC. Likewise, the tempo tailored defenses are not going win a title either.

You are quite correct about the use of TE's in both top college and NFL teams...while they may not out run a DB, they can out muscle them. This is one position that I don't understand how we can be so weak...

I can go find some obscure stat that ranks Alabama really high in all sorts of things if I want to, that's certainly not a commonly accepted one.

Having said that, let's see...
Alabama has a 1.
Texas A&M has a .9
Iowa has a 1.01
Georgia has a 1.93

Georgia has a similar level of talent and a bunch of ex-Alabama coaches running Saban's scheme.

Golding by any measure, even that is under-performing significantly. Do we really think Iowa has better talent?

Edit: I posted based off 21 stats, if I go by the 22 stats Iowa is 1.22 and Georgia is 1.46 to Alabama's.99 in 2022. Either way, Alabama shouldn't be so far behind Georgia consistently, nor should they be behind an obviously far less talented Iowa team on a consistent basis either.

Alabama was
1.57 in 2015
1.88 in 2016
1.61 in 2017
1.39 in 2018 when Golding took over play calling at some point in the season.
.93 in 2019
.50 in 2020 (I would assume this is a bit skewed by the lack of out of conference games, but still 8 spots below Georgia and even further behind Iowa)
Then 1 and .99

It's just not where they should be, even going by that ranking.
In Golding's four full seasons calling plays on defense, he had the four worst Alabama defenses since the 2007 season! Even by that statistic!

Georgia plays very similar to some of our more physical teams of the past. For all the people talking about the game changing I’d give anything to have one of those teams again…doesn’t seem to stop Kirby from winning championships😏

Not to mention that other folks would come knocking with job offers. Maybe they have, but most coaching offers are highly publicized by agents to get their guys a raise even if they don't take the job.

All at or around the top 10. I get you hate Golding. That’s fine. But he’s a Top 10 DC according to the stats.

And those are just the next 4 that came up on my search.

Maybe he only has those stats because he has the best players in the country. You have to take that into account. What would his stats look like at Michigan State or Wisconsin or Iowa?

You do know what the defense was doing before he showed up right? It was the #1 defense in college football!

Does anyone here think he has the 10th best defensive talent in college football? That it's the 10th best scheme?

If you were coaching prime Michael Jordan and your team finished 10th you would have done a terrible job. Well he took the best defense in college football and turned it into the tenth best.

That's doing a terrible job.

That may be true. I don’t care really. All I was doing was responding to the haters that he indeed has a Top 10 defense most years.

again. He’s a millionaire and underperforming. If he moves on that’s fine. I don’t really care.

but I do get tired of the incessant whining about everything.

Sometimes numbers actually prove we aren’t as bad as everyone is acting.

But yes. It could be better.

That's not really the point of contention. You said this:
" Pete is considered a top 10 DC by most that rate these things. "

If someone took over for Nick Saban as head coach, and then proceeded to finish 9th or 10th for four years in a row, would that head coach be considered a top ten coach in the country?

Of course not, because he inherited one of the best programs in the country! Same goes for Golding. He's not near top ten as a DC.

He didn't just do worse than Smart and Pruitt did at Alabama. He did worse than Tucker, Lanning, and Mushcamp at Georgia! You have the best car in an F1 race and you finish 10th, you did a bad job...

I don’t hate Golding. It’s not personal. He is a football coach, not a politician( ok I hate some politicians.) what aggravates me about his defense is third down and long. How many times did opposing teams gain 10,15 or so yards to make a first down. Stats do not always tell the whole story.
