Pete easy. We win every game this year with a better defense this year. Pretty much every year against every real offense the defense gives up a lot of points. I am not counting Ole miss year in and out cause going on 4th all the time kills them.If you had only one choice, who goes, Pete or BoB?
Yes he was tasked to build that. How ever the result is such a poorly coach defense with a scheme that is honestly terrible. The talent of players is the only thing that has saved him. That is being nice. He can't coach a position group much less DC. He has proven to take away the edge defender against teams and it seems like waits for Saban to make in game adjustments not himself. The man has even used two Dlineman in goal line situations which says enough. Saban has let him probably put the biggest mark as a DC on the defense. But the secondary problems are still all on Saban. The argument stuck between different types of offenses is bad when players are so poorly coached and the scheme is just simply bad. A base defense can't be 2-4-5 and be dominant. Pete should not be a position coach here much less DC. Saban should adapt his secondary or let others coach it as well. So I will give up Pete before O'Brien cause we would at least score. Granted Young will be gone so maybe not.Pete is considered a top 10 DC by most that rate these things. We are always comparing him to those who came before him.
I think he tried to do what was asked of him. To try to build a defense to compete with basketball on grass.
the re-emergence of TEs in the game, along with some teams moving back to smash mouth has left us vulnerable against some.
now we are stuck between two types of offense in our league.
UT, State, OM, and Auburn who play fast and tempo.
Arkansas, UF, USCe and Mizzou who do both
A&M, UGA, LSU, Kentucky, etc who play slower and more methodical.
it’s a tough job. And you have to change schemes by game. And sometime your personnel doesn’t allow it.
