I never attended the University but have worn my Bama shirts with pride all over the world as I traveled in the Air Force. I don't have access to anything remotely close to inside information and don't know that I want to. I schedule things so I can watch every Bama game possible and get very disappointed when they lose. I have seen every game this year and I can tell you that we were one or two offensive linemen somewhere near the caliber of AS from at least a 10 and 2 record.
I see no reason to panic and commit hari-kari. I wish Coach Shula the very best of luck during the coming recruiting season and much success as the coach of my favorite team----ROLL TIDE!!!! Color them Crimson!

Why panic when we all saw this coming? We've wallowed in mediocrity since Shula has come aboard. We have not gotten any better and I don't think there is a possibility that UA does get any better under Shula. It's time we stop settling for mediocrity and dumbing down expecations and we're close just does not get it anymore. Shula is not the answer.

Im not panicing but I am content now about the situation. I know that the barn will flash us 6 fingers next year. Im content that the barn might roll off 8-10 in a row on us. Its cool cause my barn friends dont rub it in. Im content that we will barley beat garbage teams at home. I have also seen it calling. Fans in the stand arent supposed to be calling the plays before they happend.

Don't forget to get your tongue unlodged from your cheek:biggrin:

We all saw this coming? I'm not so sure about that. You would think that Bama fans, for the most part, can do simple addition and subtraction. But, I'm beginning to wonder about that as well.

Subtract 21 scholarships. Add the number of years of depleted classes. Yes, we should have all seen it coming. Amazingly, a large number of Bama fans act as if nothing would come of one of the most devistating NCAA penalties in history. Or, maybe I was just naive to believe that most could actually do the simple math.

Franchione predicted a 3-8 season this year if he had stayed. So, was Shula mediocre or did the team play over their head? Who came closer to beating Akansas than Alabama besides Southern Cal? 5 losses were a touchdown or less. Last season, a 10-3, Top 10 finish, should have been one of our worst seasons. Again, it only takes simple mathmatic skills to figure that out.

It's not a matter of settling. It's a matter of facing reality and doing simple - extremely simple - math.

BhamTide I agree with alot of what you're saying. I predicted 7-5 this year and told my friends I wouldn't be suprised at all with a 6-6 or 8-4 finish with 6-6 being the more likely of the 2. All that being said... the problem is the way things have panned out or rather haven't panned out! If Mike had made one coaching change after last years season he wouldn't be sitting in this position right now. Even with predictable play calling, a well coached OL would have meant 2 or even 3 more wins this year. Me and most every knowledgable fan here were calling for CBC's head. Now highly explosive jet fuel has been poured all over this fire by Shula himself. HOW? By his lack of commenting on addressing the failures. His lack of "manning up" and taking responsability, saying this type of performance is unacceptable, steps are being taken to fix it I don't care if we have to try out every guy on the team along the OL... we're gonna get it fixed! If he had said this and meant it we're not so DANG angry! But he hasn't said anything, he hasn't ... Put it this way...

What has he done to address the obvious glaring problems in certain areas of the teams play, performance, committment, desire, and execution? The answer is outwardly he has done NOTHING! Thus leaving the fan base to come to one conclussion only, that he is INSANE, because the common description of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results! Shula has continued doing the same things over and over and over... per starting Capps at RT, going to the "jumbo" package inside the 5, and abandoning the power sweep/offtackle plays we've ran with more success than the inside trap/dive plays and these same things continue to fail!

Ooohh I feel better, first time I've typed it all out. Hope that answers your and anyone elses questions as to why the fanbase is upset...

PM

For the record I again state I think things can still work out with Shula. If he understands these problems, not has to be shown them, and the right hires are made to change the chemistry of the offensive side of the team... nay I say the whole team. He could have a "Tubervillian" type of rennaissance! But that's a big IF!

Good first post and welcome to the board. I agree with all you say.

There are many fans like you! I don't think for one minute that the negative posts you are reading about Shula represent the majority of Bama fans. The majority of Bama fans don't post opinions online or call radio talk shows. Yes we want to win but we also understand the hand Shula was dealt. Every recruiting class has moved us closer. The lineman recruits from last year will go along way toward curing the O line problem. At worst, there will be a O-line coaching change during the off season. 2007 will be the year that Bama is back!

Crimson Crony I feel the same way. The majority of Bama fans are not contributing to this crazy trash talk that in the long run will only hurt our recruiting class for 07.

BTW I'm from Sylacauga as well.

The Air Force?

"The expectation level is high at the University of Alabama and it should be. What's wrong with people expecting excellence?" Coach Gene Stallings :BigA:

I am not sure where you are going with your comments but my expectations are well into overdrive.

After 22 years in the Navy serving with the Navy, Marine Corps, Army and yes the Air Force I am sadden at the thought the Air Force would settle for less than Excellence. They haven't but it appears your comments support less than excellence.

"We're going to bomb them back into the stone Age."
"All out Victory, I will not settle for less"
— General Curtis E. LeMay USAF, 1965.

General LeMay sounds like a winner who would not except less than outstanding. So why would you? :BigA:

A trained seal could have won 7 games with our talent.

One of the reasons we are "one or two linemen short" is because we aren't properly conditioning or coaching the linemen we have. We have gotten progressively worse in this area for four straight years. We got shoved around by Duke and FIU for Christ's sake. Pathetic.

We haven't played special teams or been able to seriously include a tight-end in our game plan since Shula got there.

Our players do not respect Shula. He has no control over them.

It's time to move on.

I have to agree with tidefan4evr. There are mitigating circumstances at work in the Alabama football program. That doesn't excuse all of the problems, but it should be seen as a reason for at least some of the problem. That's not to say that there are not self-inflicted wounds within the program also. If the decision is made to retain Mike Shula as the head coach, I can live with that. If his decisoin is to retain all of his assistants, that's something else entirely. I certainly hope he's smart enough, and cares enough about Alabama football, to recognize the problems and to take steps to remedy them. If the decision is made to relieve Mike Shula of his position, I can live with that too. I see a downside to either choice.

And by the way, I spent 20 years in the Air Force and still work on an Air Force base. If you don't think the Air Force settles for less than excellence you're sadly mistaken. I love the Air Force and will be Air Force until I die. The vast majority of airmen are dedicated, intelligent, hard-working individuals, but I have to tell you there's a lot of dead wood hanging around and getting promoted. Always has been.

I too was pleasantly surprised, given probation, with the 10-2 regular season though everytime i think about it i remember immediately the way it ended. You're not telling the whole story of that season if you ignore how disappointing it ended up being, despite the record.

Guess I didn't think about the team playing over their head and beating three more teams than Franchoine predicted, which teams do you guys think we played over our heads against? Vandy, Hawaii, Duke, UL Monroe???

Personally, I think we played over our heads in most of our games. I think we were fortunate to beat Hawaii, given the season they've had, and probably lucky to beat Vandy. Before you think those games were gimmees, I'll remind you of past losses to Vandy and La Tech when we weren't in the pinch of probation.

Ignoring that this should have been one of our two toughest seasons due to probation is shortsighted, imo.

I'm not saying Shula has been perfect or that nothing needs to change. I'm saying many fans are totally unrealistic or ignorant of reality. Take your pick.

Shula has stated that he is re-evaluating every aspect of the program. It would be hard for him to have made major changes last season given the success. Let's see what he does now.

I'll echo that.....welcome!! BTW, I see nothing in his post indicating he was even remotely willing to "settle" for anything.....much less the "mediocrity" some of you like to fling around. Just because he has a different perspective than you, gives no-one the right to bash, according to board rules........good manners not withstanding! ;) (see NYBamaFan's post):biggrin2:
