Here are a few names to think about now that Gottfried is gone:

Mike Anderson
Mike Davis
Mark Few
Anthony Grant
Tom Izzo
Tubby Smith
Steve Wojciechowski

I think Mike Anderson would be a great choice because he would lock down recruits in this state.... and it would be a drastic change of style.

My vote would be for either Tubby Smith or Anthony Grant. Tubby would be my dream coach to obtain, he's able to recruit and build a respectable and powerful program. Anthony Grant has recently come under my radar after reading up on him and seeing his performances on TV. I just pray that MM won't go after a coach that no one has ever heard of hoping to make things okay. The University, IMO, needs to pay more attention to ALL of their athletic programs, and not just football (can't believe I just said that). The SEC West has no dominating basketball team (maybe MSU or LSU), but nothing like Tennessee, Kentucky, or Florida has in the East. Why can't we take this opportunity to acquire an amazing coach that can not only build a team, but can build a program that not only the Alabama faithful love, but the media and the rest of the country as well? MM needs to make this happen....

Again, all just my opinion

Tom Izzo is a pipe dream. I think we would have a better chance of getting Phil Jackson, which is somewhere in between 0 and 0.0000000001%. I would be surprised if we were able to pull Few away too because right now the Gonzaga program is much better condition than the Alabama program.

All the others are strong possiblities. TIDE-HSV makes me think that we might be able to pry Tubby away from Minnesota. The rest would come for sure if Bama came knocking.

Does anyone think Rick Pitino would consider the Bama job? That would be a huge hire, but I just don't know if Alabama basketball could attract that high profile of a coach.

I think Anthony Grant would be a very good hire.

Don't laugh...John Calipari...

from Memphis? Memphis currently pays him $2.3M a year.

Does the money exist, and is the administration committed, to basketball enough to pay up to $2.5M for a basketball coach?

I have my doubts that this is actually true, but I wish we would approach our new coaching prospects like I approached applying to law school - my dream school (John Calipari), followed by a few more top notch, then a list of candidates we would be more likely to get.

From what I understand, Calipari is the type of personality who thrives when he has other coaching personalities to butt heads with. I've been around some Memphis alums who say privately, that Cal doesn't consider Conference USA to be much of a challenge anymore with the departure of Louisville and Cincinnati.

My guess is, he may be open to the right offer. The SEC is down, but it won't stay down. But even at its height, it isn't the ACC. There are a few elite programs year after year to coach against, and with guys like Pearl, Gillespie, Donnovan, and Stansbury, plenty of guys to enjoy beating. The SEC would not be nearly as challenging as the ACC, when Cal reportedly turned down 2M from NC State, due to the prospect of coaching and recruiting against Roy Williams and Coach K within a 25 miles radius.

I would love it if we would at least talk to the guy, although I doubt he is too popular on these boards.

I personally think Calipari would put Alabama basketball on the map, as UA and Memphis are fairly equal in terms of basketball prestige. With the absence of an elite basketball power in the SEC West, think of the recruiting draw and potential there is to dominate, and make a commitment to big-time college basketball. We spent the money on upgrading Coleman, so we might as well spend the money to hire a coach to fill the place (as often as possible).

John Calipari at the top of mine...

followed by Anthony Grant, Tubby Smith, Mike Anderson, and Tony Bennett (Washington State).

I think you go after the biggest name, you offer them a ton of money and you dont go for second rate. This is the time, the opportunity to turn Bama Basketball into something. I go at Petrino and/or any other big name. Im tired of getting fed the same ole song about this just being a football school. Its time for some rings baby!!!!

Re: Don't laugh...John Calipari...

Sorry but , I am :D I wish I wasn't but , I could never see it happening .

I would LOVE to see Mike Anderson here. According to an interview I heard with Charles Barkley, Anderson would have taken the Auburn job a couple of years back, but they wouldn't remove some hoops that they wanted him to jump through.

Anderson has a proven system that could really energize the fanbase and make Bama basketball watchable again. Big question is if he would leave a pretty good job at Mizzou to come into the SEC for what could regrettably be considered a lateral move?

Isn't Anthony Grant the coach Florida was going to hire when Billy Donovan announced he was going to take the Orlando Magic job a couple of years ago?

I don't want to throw cold water on the wish list, but I think Bama basketball fans should manage expectations about the next head basketball coach. Not that we shouldn't aim high, because we should, but there is some reality to face here.

This won't make me popular, but Bama basketball right now is a lot like Auburn football. We are a somewhat damaged brand. Yeah, we've produced a steady stream of pros, had some good seasons, and even won a title. But we're far from being a premier coaching job. Established coaches aren't going to leave basketball schools (ex. Calipari, Few) to take the Bama job.

The good news is, as pointed out earlier, that the SEC West is fertile ground. And there is talent in these parts. So we have that going for us. But independent of putting a boatload of money on the table (like more than anyone else), we shouldn't expect the John Caliparis and Rick Patinos of the world to be knocking on the doors of Coleman Coliseum. I could, on the other hand, envision Tubby Smith leaving the Big 10 to return to the SEC.

Agreed. That is why I said that we have no chance at Izzo earlier in this thread. There is one major difference between us and Auburn though. Our athletic department will hire a coach that is actually better than the one that was fired. With Auburn...not so much. :biggrin2:
