Count me in the "Give Him Whatever He Wants" camp. Coach Saban has already shown that he's not doing this just to maximize his personal profits. He took a pay cut to come here, he's written big $$ checks back to the school, and he's paid out bonuses to his assistants.

If he thinks he needs to be the highest paid coach to carry an impressive level of prestige into a recruit's living room, then let's make him the highest paid coach in the country. If he thinks his staff needs more money for us to retain the top assistants, let's increase the payroll. On the other hand, if he thinks that a pay raise in this economic climate would bring bad publicity to the school, then we shouldn't force a pay raise on him just so we can say that we pay our coach more than anyone else.

Anyone who opposes this line of thinking is apparently ignoring the fact that these investments are paying huge returns. Not just in bowl dollars, either.

Give Saban what he wants.

I don't think he's vain enough to think he needs a new contract just because he won the NC, but if he came to Bama and said give me 6 million or I leave, he would easily be worth it.

CNS didn't want, need, or ask for more money. Last year's bumps came around and what he ask(insisted) was met without hesitation. I thought it interesting the head football coach included raises/facility improvements for some women's sports instead of money for himself. Claimed the overall health of the entire athletic department helps recruiting or something. If he wants,,,,,,,,,, GIVE IT!!!!!

Not really sure. I think it is all relative to the amount of revenue that the program generates and the amount of $$ the school has. I know Alabama generates a good amount of revenue from it's football program, but I don't know how it compares to Texas.

My initial reaction is to keep it where it is, with modest inflation guard increases.

At the same time Nick Saban came to Alabama to win National Championships. That idea and understanding is intertwined within his original contract. He was not paid 4 million a year to go 10-3 or 6-5...he was paid that much to win NC's! Every year someone is going to win the NC...that is a fact! I am all about coach's making money, as I am one, but as for a coach getting a ridiculous "new contract" or multi-million add ons every time they win a NC is ridiculous. That is what bonuses are set in place for...

Example...Peyton Manning makes 11.5 million dollars a year! His salary comes with the understanding that he is going to be a pro bowl quarterback. His salary comes with the understanding that he is going to put the Colts in a position to win the Super Bowl. His salary comes with the understanding that he is going to throw alot more touchdowns than interceptions, etc.

So because Peyton Manning wins a Super Bowl and is selected for the Pro Bowl, does that mean they now need to re-negotiate his contract and give him more money?

No!!!

Bonuses are set in place for things like these...
I agree, but I don't think that this will be about trying to placate a coach who just won or who is demanding more. It is about talking to him about the stability of the staff and continuity. These are important in recruiting and in building a team, over time, toward a championship.

So, if Saban says that X, Y and Z are necessary for that, we need to try to implement X, Y and Z. He may ask for something that we haven't even thought of - like some new training equipment. But whatever he asks for needs to be seriously considered. He isn't in this for the money. While he is here, he wants to win EVERY game, and his requests will be in that endeavor...

GIVE HIM WHAT EVER HE WANTS!!!!! I don't think he would take advantage and like others have said, MB is severely over paid.

IMO there's no discussion here. CNS has turned our program around in 3 short years. NO ONE ELSE ON THE PLANET COULD HAVE DONE THIS!!!! CNS is a work-aholic and so far seems to be enjoying his job. Let's do everything possible to keep it that way.

I completely agree...

Saban seems to have the universities interest at the forefront of his visions and actions.

With that said, this thread is about giving Saban a raise.

It seems to be a topic that we as fans bring up everytime Saban wins a game, championship, etc.

I would just like to see this topic go to rest. Saban has an agent that will do what is best for CNS and more importantly himself. The more Saban makes the more the agent makes. Trust me guys, that agent is going to squeeze every penny that the University is willing to give to CNS. We as fans don't need to be picketing outside of T-town...there are others that are doing plenty of that.

Finally, I think CNS is happy with his salary and that Mal Moore is trying to appease Saban with facility upgrades and things of that sort. If you haven't looked lately, BDS is about to have a capacity of over 100K...not too shabby. Our weight program is first class, etc. We are not lagging behind in any areas currently due to lack of funding.

As fans (for now), sit back and enjoy the ride...All is well, WE ARE CHAMPS, and will be in contention to be champs for years to come!

I am of the mindset, like others, to give CNS what he thinks he needs to maintain a championship team at the Capstone.

I am also in agreement that he was hired to win championships, not just to coach. So, for us to demand that we give him a raise every time he does something good negates the reason we hired him in the first place. I honestly think CNS cares more about his staff and his facilities than he does he own salary. When you are making the kind of money he is, all a raise does is increase the amount of taxes you pay because you aren't out blowing millions on stupid stuff. Remember that he spends an insane amount of time recruiting and coaching...not "living it up."

At the end of the day there is really only one person that matters...and that is Mrs. Terry. As long as she is happy...he is happy. Any man here can agree with that.

can the bama football economy handle it? If so... pay away. Texas can afford to pay mack b/c we make more money than any other college sports program. By a lot.

Look at the additional $$$$$$$ that Coach Saban has helped to bring our way.
Look at the $$$$$$ that Coach Saban has given to the University.
Look at the $$$$$$ that Coach Saban & Terri give to charity.
Look at the additional money that the City of Tuscaloosa makes because of
Coach Saban.
(I know a lot of you don't care about Tuscaloosa making money, but it also helps the businesses in the area.)

Now lets open our pocket book and reward Coach Saban in kind.
I know it makes a few admin. types crazy, but we should do it sooner rather than later.

Another thing...

Coach Saban wasn't hired to make money...he was hired to coach the football team. I know that indirectly you can say he was hired to make money, but that is not his job. He is not rewarded based on how much money he brings in for the University. He could be making us $100 Million but if he is not winning, he will be fired.

So...you can't always justify giving someone a raise because they make the University, City, and State a lot of money when that isn't their job.

Oh...and he's already getting paid a good bit to do all of the extra stuff that is built around making the University money like the Crimson Caravan and REC events. So, if they want to pay him more for that...then that is awesome. Just don't demand that we give him more money because the football program is making more.

I agree with most of this but I will add...

Winning and making money are in directly proportionate within each other.

Example...BCS National Championship, how do you get there, winning. Does it pay more than the Papa John's Bowl? Yes.

Merchandise sales...

All these "bandwagon fans" that some of you refer to daily...they are buying merchandise because everybody loves a winner.

We go 6-6 on a regular basis, not only would Saban be out a job, our revenue stream would take a plunge!

FWIW...CNS gets paid for all of the things that he accomplished "above and beyond" this past season. So...he gets his awesome salary...and if he wins championships and such...he gets monetary compensation for that.

Like I said before...I think he cares more about his staff and his facilities. Making more money is not going to make him more successful. Having the best staff and facilities will.

I am aware and agree.:BigA:

Good grief! Don't these head coaches already make enough money? It is absolutely ridiculous to insist that Coach Saban be the highest paid coach in the country because he won the MNC. So, we give him a raise and pay him $6 mill because of the championship win. What if next year Texas wins the championship, does Brown's salary then go to $7 mill. If Bama wins the following year does Saban's salary go to $8 mill. This stupid trend has to stop at some point. I say UA makes a stand now and leaves the salary alone, unless coach Saban insist on renegotiating it.
