Have to hand it to those Aggies, they are emailing and faxing to beat the band, which is one of the things addressed here.

I have no way of knowing if this is spot on, but I do not agree with this:

Our estimates said it would cost us an extra million dollars a year in travel to go east or west.

South Carolina (on my map) does not look any futher than Iowa State or Nebraska. I have not plotted it with GPS, but I think that is a stretch.

Personally, I think his open letter (plus the article he linked) show that he and the Big 12 are nothing but a big joke.

Keep in mind we are talking about extra traveling distance for all the athletic teams, not just football.

Umm...that makes no sense. If they're travelling the same distance to Iowa state, wherever the hell that is, as they would be to Columbia, it's a wash regardless of the sport. The outliers in both conferences are all pretty much the same distance from College Station. And they'd be playing Western Div teams anyway.

What do SEC get 17 million guaranteed and then whatever after bowls? My math says they aren't making that much now so therefore by deduction 17 million > 1 million so who cares about that small amount?

In my book it is called being scared of big brother in Austin.

The link he puts at the end of his letter is interesting. He's calling out Texas and giving credence to the theory that the shorthorns whole objective was to get Nebraska out of the conference and sweeten the media deal. It's Byrne's way of pointing a finger without having to say a word...

He's full of it. The Twelth Man Foundation (where we donate as Former Students) will lose a lot more than a few million this year in donations. The truth is that he and the rest of the Athletic Department (mainly coaches) were probably afraid of losing records. Losing records = getting fired. Funny thing is, we would of expected the losses and they wouldn't of been fired yet....they'd of had a few years to grow into the SEC.

This, to me, just proves that the old men in maroon 60+ years old (no offense to the older posters here) only care about playing the horns, cupcake teams and have an easy route to title games. They are unwilling to invest the time it takes to be the best possible and are fine with an inferior product. The younger generation of fans just want to compete against the best week in and week out. Soon enough, our time will come and we will be in their positions and change will come. Until then, we will have to suffer, but we will learn from their mistakes I hope.

p.s. It's not over just yet for some of us. The 12th Man Foundation is having a golfing outing this coming weekend at Barton Creek Country Club in Austin, protests/meetings/hell raising is being planned and we (Former Students that realize we are being led by the misinformed) will be heard one way or another.

Well...that article also gave some level of credence to the instability of the Big 12 conference...an assertion he really didn't refute in his open letter.

FWIW Columbia is roughly 1,094 miles from College Station. Ames Iowa is a little less at 931 miles. Lincoln is 811 miles. Bill Byrne is just an imbecile. The folks in Lincoln still detest the guy.

My very best wishes to your endeavor! While not terribly vocal on the matter, I was looking forward to the Aggies becoming a member of the SEC.

Big 12 north teams are a long way from College Station. Just Sayin'

I looked it up and Kansas and Bama would be about equal travel for people needing a point of reference.

Harumph! :)

An old bull and a young bull were standing on a hillside, looking at a herd of cows down in the valley. The young bull says "I'm gonna run down there and have me a juicy cow!"

The old bull replies "I'm gonna walk down there and have them all!"

Fight the good fight!

I hope SEC fans stay vocal as well. Through this, I think a lot of us (I saw it earlier but I won't lie and say I always saw it) saw that Texas and their buddy OU (they've shown where their allegiances lie) wouldn't fit in with the SEC, but that A&M would fit and would be a great fit at that. I hope we don't forget that...

While Byrne has done a great job for our Athletics in general, Football is King and we haven't improved as we have expected (See hiring Fran/firing Fran).

We have just all of our BoR's personal email addresses and I, along with much of our fanbase, has been sending emails daily. I attended A&M from 1990-1994 and have never seen our fans and Former Students so irate at this situation. As I type this, I just hit send on an email to Gene Stallings. Next up, the real criminals in all of this the rest of our BoR and our puppet President. Thank you all for your support!

Kind of ironic, but someone on Texags asked "Would Alabama fans stand for this?". We said no and wondered what you all would do in our situation. If you were stuck in our current state of affairs, what would your course of action be? Thanks for your time and again, thanks for even letting me post here and being so kind throughout.

Not to be argumentative, but he's right about the distance. As the crow flies, A&M to ISU is 801 miles (1602 round trip). A&M to USC is 924 miles (1848) round trip.

If we consider likely division affilliation (SEC W, assuming AU stays W and SEC adds a 14th team to the E from the ACC), the difference is even greater due to unusually close proximity of Big 12 South schools and additional divisional game (6 vs 5). Of course, if the 14th team came from the Big 12, AU would likely slide to the E, and distances would be shorter.

Distances in miles as the crow flies (one way/round trip):

BU (80/160)
UT (88/176)
OU (323/646)
OSU (381/762)
TT (382/764)
Total (1254/2508)
Ave (251/502)

LSU (309/618)
Ark (395/790)
UM (474/948)
MSU (482/964)
UA (545/1090)
AU (654/1308)
Total (2859/5718)
Ave (477/953)

Almost twice the distance/gm, well over twice the distance for total divisional play. Multiply that times total travelers over multiple sports, and he is likely not too far off about the increased mileage and costs.

This does not take into consideration that A&M likely busses to BU and UT (much cheaper), but would fly to every SEC opponent.
