Tenercee backs out of UNC series

Just saw that UT has decided to buyout the home and home with UNC beginning in 2011, and is picking up the mighty Buffalo Bulls instead...
 
No wonder Tennessee fans are hot. Certainly not the Tennessee that I've watched all these years that played h/h's with Notre Dame, UCLA, and Miami.

I'll give Mike Shula and Mal Moore credit where credit is due-- at least they didn't try to buy out Oklahoma back in 2003.

What does that matter? Out of conference games have always been optional. Always will be. They are getting out of a game they know will have issues with. Same as us with PSU.

In addition to the revenue aspect of the 8th home game, which is why we didn't back out of Oklahoma in Shula's 1st year. We had already played in Norman, and it would have made no sense to back out of the revenue that was going to be generated from that one home again against Oklahoma.
 
I don't find UNC that tough of an oppoinent, I mean they are no Boston College, VA Tech calibar ACC team. Besides, they are going to wish they didn't spend that money to buy out the series if they get hit with some sort of probation and have a year bowl ban or something.

It's a good move by UT. They know the talent that they have...or more accurately...the talent they don't have. They also know that losing to UNC would be a recruiting disaster. It's better to have this story in the newspapers for a bit and let it pass than to have UNC on the recruiting trail discussing with a kid considering UT their even status with UT in the event of a split or their new dominance over UT in the event that they went 2-0.

Plus, as mentioned above, the away game costs money. Buffalo, Sister Mary's School for the Blind or any other team coming to Neyland brings in revenue...revenue that a struggling program will need.

I don't fault UT but it is sad how poor leadership has taken a national powerhouse down to mediocrity.

Which is why another home game against an opponent that won't demand a return game in their place is that much more important.
 
UNC is being investigated also... if they are on probation also, i doubt the talent would be different.. they might get a Northern Illinois that has that magical year if they arent careful. They already lost to Memphis in the past like us... so are they going to repeat our chapter?

2004 PSU was 4-7 we were 6-6
2005 PSU was 11-1 we were 10-2


interesting if we had played in 04/2005, would have been a good game both seasons.
 
I thought the reason we moved the PSU series was "scheduling difficulties." Maybe that was cod for "the sanctions hurt us and we think we'll lose" but I thought the official word was scheduling conflicts.
