Duke game: Who's going?

Re: Traveling to Duke??

Has anybody got info on where the Dookies tailgate and what are the good spots on campus to do it? I have a hard time thinking they actually do much tailgating at their games.

Howdy, Duke grad here (grew up rooting for 'Bama back in the Bear days, live in Dawg Nation these days). I can tell you that we are looking forward to the game, but have no illusions about the level you play at and the level we are right now. But we're trying.

You and several others are correct that Duke does not tailgate like SEC schools. Not for lack of ability to throw down, but it's just not what we are geared towards. Getting crunked to whup on the Tar Heels, now, that's a different matter.

Anyway, I post on the Duke boards a lot and wanted to wish those of you who are traveling a safe journey. You are right that this is a small venue, and not a hotbed of football. Cutcliffe's a good fit for us, though, and hopefully he can get us competitive in the ACC.

So come on up, enjoy the campus, and please be gracious guests -- let us keep it close the first half.

I did not know if I would be able to make it but since Friday evening the good Lord smiled upon me and helped me find 6 tickets to the game. They're General Admission tickets but I'll at least be in the stadium. It's a 3-hour drive to Durham from Boone (home of FCS powerhouse Appalachian St) but I'm looking forward to being there.

I heard the Duke campus is real nice. I hope that we enjoy the game too, and you guys do (only a little bit). Congrats on your basketball national title. I know that basketball is for Duke what football is for Bama. Ironically, both schools were national title starved and got what we were looking for this past season in our respective sports.

Cutcliffe is a good coach, and he will want this win badly. Maybe he is the guy for Duke, but the administration, alumni, boosters, and fans will have to buy in to the idea of Duke being stronger at football to get it to go anywhere. I know your baby blue rivals have made a committment to football, but we'll see how far it goes for them.

Welcome to TideFans OPK.I've met some mighty fine folks at Duke Basketball Report forum. I've accepted invitations to two tailgates, thus far. Ain't bad for a Bama low-roller, who has not been to a real game at Bryant-Denney, since 1958 when it was 'bout 30,000 seat Denny Stadium. I went to the 2007 A-Day, because I knew Coach Saban would return us to the top.

Oh, I've been to many Bama games in Baton Rouge and New Orleans including Sugar Bowls, during my 50 plus year absence from the Capstone game day.

On which Duke boards do you post? I tried to post on Duke's Scout site, TDD Football, but moderators had not approved, after several tries. :frown:Oh!

Wait! Oh, Wait! Wow! Just now, I returned. Wow! I've been approved! Now, I've forgotten what I wanted to say. :conf2:

OPK, please warn your fellow Dookies about Rammer Jammer. Lots of folks think it's poor sportsmanship with the taunting part and all. And, they're right.

It's more fun when you join in with us, I garantee. So, I suggest y'all go to YouTube and search Rammer Jammer, likely the most obnoxious cheer you ever heard from any school.Good examples: 2008 vs Tennessee at Neyland and 2008 Auburn at Bryant-Denny should get y'all warmed up. Even if we just eek out a win at Wallace Wade, expect it to hear, "Hey, Blue Devils! Hey, Blue Devils! We just beat the heck out of you! I won't join in , 'cause I save myself for Allbarn and the Viles.

One of our premier moderators, Earle, said I'm now a Duke football booster, after he read my story about buying 16 Duke season tickets. Scroll down at this link and enjoy. :biggrin2:

Thanks, GB#1. You are correct that hoops is our overwhelming focus. Cut has brought a lot of energy and excitement to pigskin, though. And the administration has certainly bought in, too -- as well as the new AD that we grabbed from Notre Dame (Kevin White).

UNC has made a commitment to football, but apparently their nanny/tutor policy needs some review. That's what you get for hiring Butch Davis, I suppose.

BTW, I'm sure it's mentioned somewhere on this thread but our stadium is named for Wallace Wade, who (IIRC) left Alabama to coach Duke's football (and other sports) back in the day. So it is a homecoming for Alabama, of sorts. Also, small bit of trivia -- the only time the Rose Bowl wasn't played in Pasedina, it was played at Wally Wade -- 1943 I think. They were worried that the Japanese were going to invade California. (Duke lost, 10-6 to Washington if I recall).

Hope you get to the game, I'll buy the drinks if Duke keeps it within three TD's.

Thanks, banjeax. I usually post on Duke Basketball Report, under the same name. If you get over there, please say "howdy."

We're glad to have y'all play here -- it's a big deal for a little ACC school like us. Our basketball team is used to rolling onto a visiting campus and it being a big deal. This is the inverse for us -- getting a national powerhouse from the best conference in the country to come to our little stadium is an honor and we are very excited about it.

I'll check out the cheer -- and I can't say that we're immune from some distasteful stuff either. Lightning would strike me if I called that kettle black.

We're glad to have you as a season ticket holder. If for some reason you don't feel that you will use your UNC game tickets, I'm sure we can talk and I can help you get rid of a couple. . . .

Hope to see you at one of the tailgates -- I will warn you in advance that the fans will be very polite, but the "tailgate" is not what you see in the SEC. I live in Dawg Country these days and have been to a number of UGa tailgates. Different leagues. As Coach Cut said in a different context, "You can't say that the ACC has fallen behind the SEC. We were never level to start." I am an ACC homer, but clearly y'all do football on a whole different level.

Good luck until the 18th!

I posted a seperate topic before posting on this thread...
Can someone give me suggestions as to where to get a hotel room on Friday and possibly Saturday night as well?

Ticket bought, hotel reserved. We will be driving down from D.C. on Friday so we will miss the UA alumni event on Friday.

We are trying to figure out what to do before the game on Sat. We were going to tailgate, but we don't know anyone, so I don't know how much fun that will be. We were also thinking about parking the car early and finding a bar, but from what I am reading here, the area around campus is sketchy, so parking and then drinking may not be an option.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

"Howdy?" Thought Texas A&M had a copyright on that greeting. Yes, I've visited DBR. Nice group. I look forward to meeting y'all all. (Note: Y'all all is plural of y'all.)

I may get back to you on UNC tickets. Tonight, my son started three 3 day NO RESERVE auctions, with free shipping Fedex Overnight, on ebay for my remaining 10 reserved seats for Bama-Duke. He has over 1,500 feedbacks, 100% Positive, so I know he knows what he's doing. But, somehow ... :conf2: He started auctions for a lot of 5, a lot of 2, and a lot of 3. Opening bid on each is 1c. Yes, 0.01.

Hope to see you at one of the tailgates -- I will warn you in advance that the fans will be very polite, but the "tailgate" is not what you see in the SEC.-- OPK

I'm not an experience tailgater, OPK. And, I'm not a picky eater. When I grew up, chicken was a special meal ... Sunday Dinner! Meat was for seasoning. Steak came in a tube, was sliced by the butcher, and had red plastic around the edges. :biggrin2:

I just found out yesterday I will be going. I'll get to meet up with my son Bamajama17 in Jacksonville, NC-(Camp Lejeune) Friday night and will head to Raleigh-Durham Saturday morning.

I'm thrilled to be able to go since this will be our only opportunity to see a game in person before he deploys in December.:biggrin2:

Big thanks to Banjeaux for his ticket offer but I ended up scoring a pair here in B'ham. :BigA:

Got tickets in hand and leaving Thursday after the kids get out of school. Going to head to Mount Airy on Friday to check out Andy Griffiths home town!

Hope everyone has a safe trip and enjoyable time. For us, we'll sleep in a tent for six weeks for a basketball game but have little experience in football tailgating. I go to a fair number of UGa games and see how they tailgate. Very intense and concentrated, for a few hours before game. We're built for comfort and distance, not speed. So it may not be "the biggest cocktail party in the world," but it should be pleasant.

It's not like we're Auburn fans, or y'all are UNC.

Driving down from Richmond Friday and staying at the Millenium for 2 nights. Looking forward to some good tailgating (even tho I don't know anyone--figure it out as we go) and then a great game. Sitting in GA since I ent the season

Priceline.com, right?

Just guessing.

Enjoy the game, travel safe, hope to see you there. -- OPK

Any restrictions re getting in the stadium? Can you bring in a sm backpack w/water, binos, etc?

Leaving Fri evening. Staying w/friends who are duke fans. Hope to meet a few tidefan members prior to the game. Open to offer of free burger and beer.:biggrin2:

I'm going, taking my son to his first Alabama game. Looking forward to getting there early and walking around Duke's campus, my son's a Duke basketball fan since he grow up in this area, and checking out some of the tailgating.

The easiest place to party the night before the game or the night after, basically the only place I know downtown Durham is the tobacco district, American Tobacco Historic District Homepage right next to the Durham Bulls stadium, who by the way are playing for another Governor's Cup, the equivalent of a minor league world series, this weekend and are at home the 17th and 18th. Anyway the Tobacco district should be lively with good food and entertainment.
