How Bama will defend Cam Newton

If you watched the game you saw how CN hurt Miss. St. time and time again on scrambles (particularly on third down).

I think we will take the same approach to stopping CN as we did with Tebow (not comparing the two at all, except they both are big and scrambled a lot).

Remember what CNS told our defensive ends when we played the Gators? Basically they were told to keep Tebow in front of them by not rushing too far into and around the pocket.

Bama and teams with any sense will do this and send some blitz packages occasionally and CN will be kept under control.

He's not cat-like quick like a Michael Vick so keeping him contained in the pocket (by keeping him in front of the DL) will really slow down his running threat. Then, when he tries to pass it down field I think we saw last night what will happen.;)

I thought this was going to end with a lame joke like, "How does Bama defend Cam Newton? Put an Apple computer on the sideline beside a window. How does Auburn defend Cam Newton? With a good lawyer."

I wasn't all that impressed with his ability. Auburn scored 17 points against a weak SEC West team. He is the only running game Auburn has developed at this point in the season. Dyer and Fanning can be shutdown, and if a defense only has to focus on 1 offensive player, the risks go down immensely. Don't kid yourself, this isn't Tim Tebow and last year's Florida Gators. They were loaded on offensive talent, had an excellent OL, a great receiving corps/TE, and extreme speed. Auburn has...Cam Newton.

I think you are right. When people figure this out, it really nullifies the big running QB. I think Saban and staff did a marvelous job of showing last year how you stop that type of player. Make him sit back there and pass and see how he handles it.

MissSt had a problem with over-pursuing Newton all night and it allowed him get past the defense. Teams like Bama won't make that mistake. The few plays that MSU kept him penned up, he couldn't pass himself out of it even with MSU dbs playing 15-20yds off the barn receivers. Newton may improve on that a bit over time this season, but I didn't see anything that the better SEC defenses can't answer. He's a big guy, and mobile but there's no way he's in Tebow's class yet.
I expect teams to make the barn one dimensional and force Newton out of his comfort zone, which is clearly run first at this point.

This is easy given his lack of passing ability as demonstrated last night. It starts up front with Marcel shedding blocks and getting after him. Then, have Dont'a spy him. I was a bit surprised MSU didn't have a LB spy him last night. I think you could sacrifice a LB in pass coverage because frankly, Cam is not that accurate...

I'm not worried in the least. I saw a hapless MSU defense do a pretty good job against the barn offense and Newton. A good defense will destroy the barn's O and their QB. Newton looked mediocre at best.

the kid can run and he has an arm. im not impressed with his ability to read defenses. so, like it was stated earlier, use the tebow approach. push him into the pocket and make him use his head to beat us, not his legs.

I wasn't saying he's Tebow, but compared the two as "big scramblers." My point was this is the way we'll defend him and when you stop his running threat, the Barn will be pretty easy to contain.

Like we mentioned last night, Cam is mobile. Like a jumbo package of "Darby up the middle". That trick play was pretty sweet (in all honesty), but he does not have the ability to burst through tacklers or read defensive formations like we saw with Tebow.

I think MSU actually made him look better than he really is.

he may be the best QB that these eyes have seen. maybe the best aubie athelete since BJackson.

it will be very difficult, even with our D. Have to get in his face so he has to move around. 6.6 and can run... Unreal

Cam has talent - if he continues to develop by Nov. he could be a force to reckon with. If he is easily distracted the fan base in T-town will rattle his nerves and he will collapse. Time may be his best friend - he may be his worse enemy.

We won't have to defend Cam cause we'll hang about fifty on these clowns. Their defense will not be ready for this.

if he stays healthy, we will all see whos right/wrong...

We'll see. However, Cam Newton can run wild against other SEC defenses if they will let him, but I think CNS knows exactly how to contain him.

The wild card is how much, if any, he develops as a passing threat. If he were to start producing with down field throws, it changes how to defend Auburn. However, with what he showed last night, just keep him in front of you in the pocket and problem solved!

Same way you contain ANY scrambling QB. More zone coverages, pull back on the man on man. DE's outside containment, the DE's should never go inside. Have a Star or Money back go on a flat, or hook zone. Or you could have an Inside or Outside backer spy on CN.

What I would say is, lay the guy out. He's not Tebow. He is GOING to get hurt if be keeps at it. Just wait for Donta' to lay that hat on his ear hole, and maybe he will think twice. As my brother said, "I want cam newton and friends DEAD." lol.

Miss. State was not hitting hard, try only guy that did was their, safety #5.

And incase you haven't noticed, we seem to take care of Scrambling QB's fairly well. Colt McCoy was Texas' number one rusher on his team, as was Tebow. So. Suck it Cam.
