"In the Trenches" Matchup: Alabama vs. Arkansas

Some good stuff in there. Some of them are a little more rational than others ;)

McElroy has yet to win a game with his arm... I'm tired of all the "unbeaten since Jr high" stuff. He is the college version of Trent Dilfer when he won the superbowl with the Ravens. He is a manager, that is all. Slow the running game and make him beat us throwing the ball.

When one of the more rational Ark. fans suggested:

Bama is not one dimensional. Mcelroy is a very good passer. we still need a running game.

Another chimed in with:

I believe his stats in passing are due to them having an exceptional running game. Shut down their running game and he could not win a game with his arm. And as someone has pointed out, who have they played?

Go check it out.

Alabama is only a 7 1/2 point favorite? That's all? :conf2:

I can't believe that. Can you believe that? :conf2:

I think McElroy had a very good showing against UF last year, Offensive MVP. I don't know if he won that game with his arm, but he certainly was very effective. He's not Mallet, but I think he also threw the game winning score against AU last year. I hope Arkansas' D Coordinator thinks like these fans.

Uh...

Did they not largely sell out to shut down our running game last year? And sans that 50 yard TD by Richardson in which he basically broke a tackle from every member of Arkansas's defense, did they not shut down our running game last year?

And remind me again, what were McElroy's stats from that game? Oh yeah, 17-24, 291 yards and 3 tds.

I do wonder where logic goes with some of these fanbases.

I remember the days when I would refer to stats to show why my team had a good chance to win the big game, and being disappointed when the unpleasant truth was that the other team was in fact, better.

Roll Tide.

Exactly. I hope they do sell out to stop the run. For one, they won't be able to. Our run game is better than last year. And once they do load 9 in the box Julio, Maze, and Hanks will have field days. There is literally no feasible way in my mind that Arkansas can stop our offense. I'm not sure any defense in college football can.

To the point about who have we played, I think it's a situation where most teams you play this early in the season will not be the same team that they are at the end of the season. I mean, really, we're only 3 weeks into the season. Right now all we have is speculation and hyperbole.

That being said, San Jose St. and Duke aren't world beaters, and perhaps Penn St. isn't as strong as their pre-season ranking may have shown. But, to be fair, beating Tennessee Tech, La. Monroe, and a UGA team without its best player (50% of its offense) is really nothing to pound your chest TOO hard about.

So if Arkansas is as good as advertised, then this should be the first true test for both teams.

Shhh! don't let that get out. ;) I want the hawgs to concentrate on shutting down Bama's running game. It will be fun watching Ingram and Richardson getting over a 100 yards apiece. While GMac, Julio, Maze and the rest of the WRs and TEs light them up for another 200-300 yards.

You can't shut down our run this year. Load the box. Do whatever you want. We have the best run-blocking line in CFB and the best two running backs.

I'm really curious if that is the case. Thus far we haven't had an opponent totally sell out to stop the run. Conventional wisdom is always that even the best offenses will struggle to run consistently against 9 men in the box. However, if anyone can do it I would expect Ingram/Richardson to be able to. I doubt Arkansas will stack the line this year though since it didn't really work for them last year.

Is the wildcat an answer for stacking the box? You do gain an extra blocker by removing the QB.

They are one dimensional where as we are not. If their best player Mallet goes down they are toast. If our best player goes down, Ingram, Bama will keep trucking along. Even if McElroy were to go down I don't see them shutting Ingram, Richardson and company down. And I suspect our second string QB has had more snaps than their second teamer has had this season. Both teams have great recievers so that is a wash in my mind.

Even if both defenses are about the same, which I highly doubt, their D will more than likely be on the field more than ours thanks to our run offense. In my opinion they need Bama to shoot themselves in the foot multiple times to have a chance at winning. And that is not likely to happen. What have we had 3 tournovers in three games if memory serves correct? One INT by Mc and two fumbles by Lacy? How many has Arky had? I really don't know that question but I bet more than Bama.

Seems like there's a lot of "we have to beat the refs too" sentiments, not sure why...

It's probably part of the conspiracy theories from last year. I remember several games against Arkansas where we failed to beat the refs or is it a rule that they get 12 defenders on third down?

Saw this

The greatest advantages I see for Arkansas: Arkansas' C & OGs compared to Alabama's undersized NT; Alabama's undersized C compared to Arkansas' DTs (both have 20+ pounds on Bama's C).

Their center and one of the guards are freshmen..The guy they'll most likely being tryint to stop wears #57 for Bama...If that's their greatest advantage....wheeeeeew...might be a long day.

We've had five, they've had six.

Bama has had four lost fumbles and one INT, Arky has had three of each.
