Re: Kicking

kicking game was atrocious. if we punt instead of kick we win this game. they didnt just barely miss, they were terrible. 21 other guys put their bodies on the line and one guy who never gets hit can't do his job. sorry to throw them under the bus but they just lost the nat champ for their teammates. no excuses, they let everyone down.
This.

Re: Kicking

I don't expect Foster to make all of those kicks, but I'd like to see him make at least half. If he makes at least one more, we win. It's not like they were close misses either. All of them were off target, and most of them were too short.

I agree, honestly dont think its to much to ask for a scholarship kicker to at least develop a little as a kicker in 2 years, I can't help but feel our special teams coaching needs to be re-evaluated, but thats just my opinion before people jump on me for having one.

Re: Kicking

i'm blaming coaching. i was screaming at the top of my lungs BEFORE we even attenpted the 1st fg. we knew it was out of their range. i dont understand. we have the best coach, but i feel some of these decisions were horrible. punt or go for it. i would have taken either of those choices. i am so very frustrated. everybody knew those kicks were going to miss...including foster. why do you put shelley out there on that 3rd attempt? are you trying to shatter his confidence? that was way out of his range. we got out coached and it's not like the other teams coaching did a great job. oh and what about that overtime debacle? unbelievable. and yet i still hold out hope.

Re: Kicking

+1 to getting a kicking coach. CNS usually makes the proper adjustments, so lets hope he finally sees the wisdom in this one. Look how good Corey Smith? (our old scholarship punter) is doing now with a little coaching.

Re: Kicking

Well, with all due respect, their best didn't get it done. When your job's to go out and make a 53-yard field goal, you better do it. No other way to sugarcoat it. Our special teams didn't execute and it cost us the game. Say all you want about play calling and penalties, but you have to execute to win. And we didn't, especially in the kicking game.
With all due respect, his job is to kick FGs in his range. It is the coaching staffs job to know his range and put him in the game when the kick is within his range. That's their job not the players to make FGs at any range you pick.

We do need to invest in a good special teams coach. CNS needs to heed his own words of wisdom on that one, "your actions speak so loudly I can't hear what you are saying". CNS conatantly preaches about the importance of special teams, but we dont seem to be making any changes to improve them. Make hiring a new coach for ST a priority coach.

And it's the offense's job not to stall and make stupid mistakes every drive when inside the 30. A couple of the snaps were bad too. There are plenty of criticisms to go around. The defense did its job from start to finish. They were the gladiators.

When Saban sent Shelley out there for that 3rd field goal , I cringed. He had no shot at it. I was screaming to either go for it or fake it and see what happens. I couldn't believe he actually tried to kick it. We've usually had good clutch kickers through the year. Van Tiffin, Phillip Doyle, Michael Proctor and even Leigh Tiffin in 2009. I don't know what happened with this bunch

Re: Kicking

I'm not going to fault a college kicker for missing kicks from beyong 45 yards out esp. a 50 yarder. However, I think it's time we invest in a kicking coach.
It's very obvious to me that Foster's mechanics on both KOs and PKs definitely could use some coaching. I'm surprised to hear that we don't have a kicking coach, if that is the case.

Re: Can we please find a kicker?

I don't know about "automatic", but we sure put a lot of games on the shoulders of Christiansen in 06.
Everyone seems to forget that the only reason he had so many late FG's to win was because he missed so many FG's earlier in those games. I mean he was like a 65% kicker.

I just don't think we are good at evaluating and coachIng kickers.

Really? How? It's not something you just go "figure out" without coaching and are good at it. It's like a golf swing lots of work goes into timing and mechanics. Go see how many pro golfers you can find without a swing coach.

I was hoping we wouldn't have to count on our kickers to win us a game this year like we had to in 09 with Tiffin in the TN game, but all blame cannot fall on their shoulders. A lot of players didn't execute and we had stupid penalities. We should have won this game, but we didn't. A lot of season still left to play. RTR.

Re: Can we please find a kicker?

Well in 2005 when he got his nickname "money" he was 64%. And some of those FG's that year were winners due to the fact he missed FG's earlier in the game.
Agreed, but he never missed one with the game on the line, and because of our offense, he had a lot of opportunities to miss with the game on the line. Statistics do not always tell the whole story.

With even more respect, do you really think the staff would have sent him out there to kick a field goal that they haven't seen him make in practice? He was drilling everything from inside 57 in warm-ups.

Agree on the kicking coach. We need one (and probably a sports psychologist for just the kickers...).
