Redshirt freshman Phillip Ely is listed as Alabama's backup quarterback on the team's official depth chart, but the competition remains ongoing, coach Nick Sabansaid today.

Ely was the first quarterback off the bench in Alabama's season-opening rout of Michigan, but he didn't see the field against Western Kentucky.

Blake Sims, a converted running back who switched to quarterback in August, received the final snaps against the Hilltoppers. He completed one pass for 6 yards.

I was surprised to see Simms off the bench ahead of Ely last week...In any case, it's good to see the 2/3 teamers getting some reps just in case we need it. Hopefully, it won't be an issue.

Outside of experience being the obvious way for both players to get better, this competition can make both better QBs.

This is an article that coach Saban would probably not like because Blake could very well be a package QB and not really on the depth chart as the starting QB. Kind of like we have a nickel and dime package, his position could be considered something else.

The question that should be asked is if Blake runs the entire offense in practice like Ely, or does he fill a role in certain attacks?

If Ely is wearing the headset, then he is 2nd string QB if McCarron had an injury with Blake playing a much bigger role as a QB too. I personally don;t believe Blake Sims will ever be the starting quarterback dee to his consistency throwing the ball.

Blake Simms I predict will start getting reps in pivotal times doing a "Wildcat Package" similar to what Ingram was used as 2 seasons ago. The only difference is that Simms is a very viable pass threat out of this set.

Understand this is pure speculation but I would be surprised if we didn't see it at some point soon.

I hope the battle for 2nd spot between Sims and Ely is an illusion like the battle for the starting position between P. Sims & McCarron was an illusion in 2011. If the battle is for real, we really are in a world of hurt if for some reason McCarron can't go in the future.

that wasn't an illusion. that was a pretty tight race until week 1

I thought it was smart that Sims got to play last week. The more experience for back up QBs the better. Hopefully, our O-line will get themselves together and protect him better than last week. If they do, there is less chance for AJ to get hurt. That would be a severe crimp in our NC chances if he is out for any length of time.

If only we had gotten a 70 year old Robert De Niro to transfer in.

Then we could not only have Meet the Tide Day but also Meet the Focker Day!

And how did that battle turn out? Didn't seem so bad to me with a NC coming from it. So if this "so called battle" turns out the same way then things aren't as bad as so many of you naysayers seem to think, huh? Wow , just WoW!!!

I'd rather have a Julie Taylor :cool2:
Laughed my butt off when she and Matt were caught by Coach Taylor in Matt's bed. Hilarious.

I don't understand you on this one. How is this bad? Are you meaning that we need a #2 guy set in stone? I don't really see how this is a problem. Many folks were split on who the #2 guy was; this seems to indicate that is the case.
Julie Taylor is the worst part of that show. Tammy Taylor on the other hand...
Now, Mrs. Taylor was great and all, but Tim Riggins was the best part of that show. "Texas forever.":D
