Dreamland...

Saw's is - hands down - the best in Birmingham. Both locations are amazing.

Green Top is hit or miss. Brilliant when it's on its game.

Dreamland is a shell of its former shelf.

Need to get back up to Top Hat one night soon for catfish and pulled pork.
Top Hat isn't what it once was.

Moes BBQ is pretty good too. One of the best things they have is their wings. They smoke them and then deep fry them. Jim and Nicks has copied their wings.

I have lightly smoked then fried wings and tossed in a hot sauce, butter, cayenne and garlic powder sauce for some 17 years now. I claim it as an original concept............

Was never a fan of Green Top. Eaten there several times with customers in the area while on business, but not really worth a mention.

Golden Rule does have pretty good BBQ, but their sides are terrible.

Really want to try Bob Gibson's, though. Can't seem to get up that way.

FYI, there is no good BBQ in Kentucky. Been working up there off and on for the last year and have tried to find a good place. Finally just gave up.

Guthrie, KY....just outside Clarksville, TN. Red Top BBQ....fine pulled pork. As good as any I've had down home. KY, in general, though, does some different things from mutton, to burgoo.

I actually liked the mutton and burgoo better then any pulled pork or ribs I've eaten up there. Different flavor profile, but not bad.

Moes is owned by three guys (think that's still true) from Huntsville. The original Moe was a black guy from Montgomery who emigrated to Eagle/Vail, Colorado. Moe passed, but the present owners more or less apprenticed themselves to him and inherited all his recipes. My wife and I owned a condo in Vail for about ten years. We became aware of them when they opened up a small satellite in the Lionshead area of Vail. They were preparing the BBQ and sides down valley and bringing it up to Lionshead. We stopped in to see what was going on and found that they'd been in Huntsville High with my stepson (Liz's youngest). It's been interesting watching them spread. Last I looked they were up to 17 branches/franchises. I haven't checked on them lately...

You will like Big Bob Gibson's. 6th avenue, Decatur. I work with guys from Tuscaloosa/B'Ham and they claim to have never eaten BBQ "White Sauce". If you haven't at least try Big Bob Gibson's version, really good. I agree with votes for Archibalds and Saws. Good thing about BBQ, tons of ways to fix it and Alabama has many that are good.

Hard to beat it. I grew up in Decatur. 6th Avenue was the "new" location in the the '50s. Big Bob himself sat at on a stool by the cash register at the end of the cafeteria-style line and collected the money. He was illiterate, but, Lord, could he count. It's been sad to watch Gibson's on Parkway south decline here. The originator, father of the current owner, was Big Bob's SIL. The present owner has gotten into politics, kiss of death for a restaurant, usually. Last couple of times I was in there, everything was all dried out...

Add another vote for Saw's. Tiny hole-in-the-wall joint with outstanding ribs. Have heard good things about Soul Kitchen as well and need to stop in.

I really like Gibson's smoked chicken and turkey, and the white sauce is outstanding. But I've never really cared for their pork, I always preferred Whitt's pork sandwiches.

I haven't had Decatur's BBQ in a long time. As I said above, Gibson's south Pkwy here is just too dry now...

I grew up on Golden Rule BBQ in Birmingham so it will always hold a special place in my heart (Probably has done some damage to it as well). I love their type of sauce - red, spicy, and vinegar based. Every time I'm in Birmingham, I try to go to the original in Irondale or the one in Hoover/Vestavia. I know it's not the best, but for me, it always does the job.

I did rather enjoy Bob Gibson's the one time I went, and I was a big fan of the white sauce. Locally in Tuscaloosa, I prefer Archibald's based on their sauce. I used to eat at Moe's quite a bit, and the BBQ is good... but the pricing is a little bit off based on what you get. Jim 'N Nicks being literally right down the road from them has kept me away. Never been a Dreamland fan or a Full Moon fan, though.

In Tampa just in case you are on vacation

Big Johns Alabama BBQ on 40th just south of Hillsborough Ave not far from Busch Gardens.

In Plant City go to Johnsons in the Farmers market

In Auburndale go to Peeples not open all year check first.

When we come up to Anniston we go to Golden Rule & Top of the River for catfish

I've only been to a few BBQ joints in south central KY. It's not really BBQ. They slice the pork shoulder thinly and just grill it so there is no smoky flavor, nor is it very tender. It's ok, but it's different. Not sure if other parts of KY do it this way.
