Re: Four Bama football players arrested...

My mom and dad stopped being accountable for me when I turned 18. They didn't stop mentoring me or caring for me, but I was accountable for the decisions I made and the actions I took. From my viewpoint, CNS does a better job than most in mentoring and creating an atmosphere where players can develop their skill set and also continue to grow as young adults. He is accountable for that. He is not accountable for poor decisions and wrongful actions committed by adults who evidently failed to heed his leadership or that of their own parents. I expect CNS to be a good role model, a good coach, to put a good, competitive product on the field, and to provide an atmosphere for UA players to succeed on and off the field. IMHO, he has exceeded all expections in these areas. Other than that, its up to the players. They are responsible for their actions, not CNS. Roll Tide.

Re: Four Bama football players arrested...

I would like to echo your post. I will be glad when this all blows over, and it will. Our Mods have much more patience than I do. Thanks guys for keeping this civil. Like in golf, sometimes you hit a good shot and get a bad break. Sometimes you hit a bad shot and get a good break. Where ever the ball goes you have to play it where it lies. In this case we need to punch the ball out in the fairway and play for a bogey or get an up and down. We'll get an eagle on the next hole. We have had a lot more eagles than we have bogeys in the last few years. It's great to be a Bama fan. I'm proud of where our program is now. We have the best leader in the business. In my best Forrest Gump imitation, "That's all I got to say about that". RTR.

Now this analogy I can understand and I agree, thanks.

Four Bama football players arrested...

You're right. It's not something for us fan to sweat too much. But we're on the peak of the hill and everyone is looking to find a chink in the armor to jab a dagger in. In short time, somebody else in major sports will screw up in a major way and we can go back to thinking about 3 in a row and say to ourselves, wow, look at the headroom we have now in getting to 85.

Everyone else is going to love to see us fall now that we are a dynasty. Just like USC a few years ago.

Re: Four Bama football players arrested...

Wow! This is the first I've seen of this. Have I been missing something about EW that everyone else knew? I may not follow recruiting as well as most of you, but this revelation shocks me. Especially with such high praise being voiced by his HS coach. Maybe his HS coach should be held accountable (JK;)).

You could find the same quotes about Rolando McClain. You can take the thug out of the ghetto, it's up to the thug to take the ghetto out of himself. RM did a reasonable job keeping himself out of trouble in Tuscaloosa while EW obviously couldn't resist the temptation.

Re: Four Bama football players arrested...

Please notice where I am from.....let me just say that I am NOT shocked. I was excited when Eddie committed to Bama but I will have to admit that I was nervous. Most of the locals, some that have had very close dealings with
Eddie, said he would not last one year. When the news broke my phone was blowing up with "I told you so's". Eddie has the ability to be the best player to ever come out of Bay County, but he made his on bed......now he must sleep in it.

It doesn't surprise me--not necessarily related to EW because I know nothing about him--but in GENERAL. What do you do as a HS coach if you know that getting a kid out of his home town may be the thing that SAVES him? It sounds like EW had a group of people trying to help him by encouraging his football ability as a way out. EW just wasn't completely on board. It really is sad to me that he couldn't see this golden opportunity and say goodbye to any of his old ways. Obviously, there are NO excuses, but I wonder what went on in his life to make him be so angry--this is the MOM in me who wants to save everybody wondering these things. I see it on a DAILY basis at work. In fact, today I have juvenile court and will meet several new clients headed down this same road. If I could save them all, I would. :(

He did rock an all white suit and tie when he committed to bama, maybe coach saban should have seen the ray Lewis within him :)

Re: Four Bama football players arrested...

I'm sure you know more about social media than myself. How many of the players do you think are abiding by those rules, percentage wise? I do see your point though, a player would have to disguise their identity, which would negate most embarrassing knee jerk tweets.

my twitter account doesn't state who i am at all.
If a player has a pseudo-Twitter name, I don't have a problem with it. His support of the players wouldn't be seen as an Alabama player supporting the other players. It would be seen as a Twitter user supporting the 4 players.

Re: Four Bama football players arrested...

I can't agree with that article. There's a point where you don't deserve the shot at redemption at least at alabama and I think these guys crossed it and then some.

It's also naive to think the media would see this as saban trying to help these guys it would be seen as winning at all costs.
Yep.

Calloway might have a chance to stay on the team, assuming he wasn't involved in the beating, but anyone involved in committing violence on another person needs to go.

I'm sad for the victims, and I'm sad that these players squandered an opportunity so few have.

Deleted.

I can see what he is saying. If they do decide to let them stay on campus, why not let it be without a scholarship with a chance to earn one back in time?

On a side note, the article completely dismisses the people that were on the other end of the beating, what is gonna be done for them?

Re: Four Bama football players arrested...

I don't know... DUI, Possesion of MJ, traffic violations...acts such as these could be shown consideration for second chances. Two counts of assault? Illegal possesion of a firearm with suggested threat of possible usage? Those, in the world of 'College Athletics' should never be excused, and the resulting punishments should set an example for every other athlete to ever walk through the doors of ANY University. Now, that may be on the harsh side of strict, but violence against innocents deserves harsh penalties. IMO.

Re: Four Bama football players arrested...

It's a shame that some people are so short sited. It's also a shame that the media is agenda driven. Helping a young man become a better person gets put on the back burner.

3 of them had their chance to be better people and flushed it down the toilet. They no longer deserve to get for free what I and many others worked our butts off to pay for and still ended up massively in debt when we were done. Get rid of them. There are far more deserving people who deserve their scholarships.

Re: Four Bama football players arrested...

I completely disagree with this article. Youthful transgressions are one thing, but beating fellow students senseless and robbing them are quite another. They need to go. I'm all for redemption and turning your life around, but it should happen someplace else, not at Alabama. The offense is just too serious and it would be terrible for the program that CNS has built.

Thanks for the insight. High school coaches are just like college coaches; they really only see one side of the kid. His HS coach had glowing things to say about him. The level of violence didn't come out of left field unless it was a mental breakdown or something. Pettway's coach kind of said DJ had issues 5% of the time; I got the feeling there was a bit of coachspeak with that though.

It's a shame that some people are so short sited that helping a young man become a better person is not as important as saving your image. It's also a shame that the media is agenda driven. That's the way it is though. Agree with your last statement

There's more than image here, these guys beat up fellow students severely. Coach can focus his efforts on helping other players on the team. Just because these guys get kicked off the team doesn't mean coach can't try to help them be better people, he supposedly stayed in contact with jimmy johns.

Yep. Assuming the accounts are true (which seems like a foregone conclusion with 2 confessions; but I'll give benefit of the doubt), the players should be gone just based on student disciplinary rules. Even assuming CNS wants to keep the kids, the University has an obligation to its entire student body and cannot tolerate this type of conduct on its campus.

Re: Four Bama football players arrested...

It is an interesting take that I don't agree with at all.

The way I see it playing any sport at a college and receiving a scholarship is a privilege. When you go and beat the crap out of 2 innocent people and steal from them you lose that privilege. They have people in jail that get paid to help these kind of people out not coaches and support staff at a college.
