ATLANTA -

A tentative deal has been reached to build a new stadium for the Falcons in downtown Atlanta, city and team officials said on Thursday.

Mayor Kasim Reed and team owner Arthur Blank made the announcement during a press conference at City Hall.

Under the proposed deal, Reed said that the city will contribute $200 million, which will come from the city's hotel-motel tax. The other $800 million will be paid by the Falcons. The Falcons will also contribute an additional $50 million in infrastructure costs.

It doesn't say if the Georgia Dome will be destroyed or not. And if it isn't, whether the SECCG and Chick-fil-a Bowl would also eventually be moving too. I don't know if this new stadium is a dome or not...one of the reasons that the SECCG is in Atlanta was because of the cold weather in Birmingham during the 1992 and 1993 games.

The new stadium will have a retractable roof, and my understanding is it will host all of the events listed above.

This just in:
A spokesman for the currently incarcerated (former) Mayor/Entrepreneur Larry Langford says that Langford is working on a deal that would bring the GA Dome to Birmingham in time for UAB's 2019 Football season or at least maybe the 2020 SWAC Women's Lacrosse Championships.

Langfords plans call for the Dome to be disassembled and then rebuilt using 50% known criminal contractors, and cronys all of which are either kinfolk or currently suing Langford for millions of dollars squandered on previous harebrained ideas.

He is currently accepting financing inquiries and states "no applications will be turned down"!

Langford says the people of Birmingham deserve a dome for their beloved Blazers and cost should not be an option!

Not far fetched for Langford. Jail or not, if he could get on the next ballot, he would be elected again.

Well they had me until they mentioned the "Equal Business Opportunity Plan". Guess thats why 200 million was needed from the city.

Yes. The thing I don't like about these new stadiums is how much the public pays. Without getting political, I just don't think it's right. In fact, there are some of these stadium deals that get funded with federal tax dollars which means people in Wyoming are helping to pay for them.

The Georgia Dome isn't that old is it? I guess it's really a never ending arms race.

I can't help but feel they used LA as leverage against the city. I know the Chargers, Rams and once more the Raiders were or are looking at Los Angeles. Taxpayers are held hostage too many times.

built in the mid 90's. actually way oput of date by todays standards. besides retractable domes are all the rage.

Los Angeles is an overrated leverage tool because the plans for a stadium out there continue to fall apart on a regular basis. Cities and teams have used it so much that the threat is now hollow. The NFL just rejected the AEG stadium deal because the projected numbers by AEG didn't make sense.

The NFL was ready to award LA and expansion team and did everything but shove the team down their throats but they couldn't get their act together and the NFL decided to drop them. That's how we got the Houston Texans.

Somehow the NFL has remained the dominant sports league in the country without a team in Los Angeles. All the whining about them not having a team gets a big yawn from me. i have no idea why someone who doesn't live there even cares.

I just don't understand this. The Georgia Dome is a fine venue. What Atlanta really needs is a new, smaller baseball park located closer to the downtown area. Even when full, Turner Field feels empty. It just doesn't have that intimacy that the premier parks in the country have (Wrigley, Fenway, Citizens Bank, ect)

As I said, the L.A. threat has become increasingly hollow. The latest stadium plan was rejected by the NFL just last week. The problem is you have multiple players trying to put the stadium in different parts of the city with the most viable (downtown right next to the Staples Center) being the one that got rejected.

Even though the NFL will probably have a team back in L.A. again at some point, the league has done just fine without a team there. It's also why a team hasn't just up and left for L.A. The market got damaged in the early 90's so they aren't about to let just anyone put a team there.

If I was a betting man, I'd put my money on San Diego being the team that eventually ends up there. Buffalo, when Ralph Wilson dies and the team is sold, would be the next option.

Turner Field is a good 4-5 years younger than the Georgia Dome, and you think they should scrap that?

I doubt the NFL will expand anytime soon. The 8x4 divisional lineups work out great for scheduling and playoffs. I agree San Diego is the most likely candidate (they originally played there) but wouldn't be shocked if the Raiders moved back. The Bills may look at moving to Toronto full time.

I'm with you on expansion... I don't see that being an option.

The thing about the Bills is that the franchise won't do anything until Wilson dies and the team is sold.

LA's problem is they want to build a stadium downtown near the Staple center. It is a horrible place to put a stadium ( no parking ghetto area, no real good mass transit etc etc) They had an offer to build one in the diamond bar area this is the one they should take. Good area good parking and freeway accesible to a large amount of people who can afford to go to the games.

Is the Diamond Bar site the same as the City of Industry proposal?
