Gun Control Thread -- (Pros and Cons) -- Aftermath of Connecticut Shooting

What I don't get is if someone drives drunk, blame the driver, an arab commits another terror attack, they are a terrorist, but a nutt case shoots 50 people, its the guns fault.

Are the flaming libs who won't secure our borders gonna ban backpacks, alarm clocks, pressure cookers and batteries? Guns don't kill, f'n whack jobs do!

It makes a sane person want to beat the tar out of a bunch of flaming libs if for no other reason than to show them that it doesn't take a gun to do it.

The gun control push will more than likely be taking a backseat after the Boston ordeal. Talk about pie in the face of focusing so hard on that "guns" are a big part of the problem. Then two dudes take pressure cookers, ball bearings, nails and cell phones and do this!

I was thinking that this morning as I was watching the news. If I were a resident of Watertown, MA and had been told not to open my door and not to venture outside because of the presence of an armed and dangerous terrorist, I'd feel a little bit safer if I were allowed to protect myself and my family instead of cowering in a corner hoping Janet Napolitano would keep me safe.

True, but the gun control zealots will just wait and hope for the next mass shooting in a gun-free zone to push their agenda.

As a side note, it'd be interesting to see the following breakdown of the gun control zealot population: (1) the percentage who identify as "pro life" and (2) the percentage who identify as "pro choice".

Follow the $$$.

All but three of the 45 senators who torpedoed gun control measures in Congress on Wednesday have received money from firearms lobbyists, according to new analysis by the Guardian and the Sunlight Foundation.

Some, such as Indiana Republican Dan Coats, registered donations from pro-shooting groups as recently as three weeks ago, when the proposal to extend background checks was still seen as likely to pass.

Just looking for an explanation of why the Senate voted down something that 90% of Americans support.

Remind me...what form of government do we have? Direct democracy? And remind me further...what's the role of the Senate versus the House of Representatives?

And by the way, you may have a poll that shows 90%, but there is at least one other poll that shows the opposite of what you are implying.

AP Poll Shows Ebbing Gun Control Support

Just over half the public _ 52 percent _ expressed disapproval in the new survey of how President Barack Obama has handled gun laws.

...an AP-GfK poll this month showed that 49 percent of Americans support stricter gun laws. That was down from 58 percent who said so in January...

If 90% of Americans wanted to make slave ownership legal, it would still be wrong to vote for a bill proposing such. We're dealing with a fundamental right (firearm ownership) and while I know this bill did not (in any way) directly violate 2A, it's still not any easy, cut-and-dried issue of doing whatever 51% of the people want.

Besides, the 90% number itself is inflated, but whatever.

Here's some real numbers to think about: http://www.policeone.com/Gun-Legisl...ey-11-key-lessons-from-officers-perspectives/

People who want to kill on any level will do so with what's available to them. Ban guns completely? Okay. We'll see more of what happened Monday. I'm not worried about "bad guys" getting guns. What I am worried about is this thing snowballing into legislation that severely inhibits me from protecting myself and my family. "You don't need a [insert gun of choice] to protect your family." There have been a lot of things that came to pass that the majority or a large group of people said "that will never happen". Then it does. You don't have to "need" a AR-15 on a regular basis for it to be "okay" to have one. All you have to need it is once. And that "once" could mean life or death for you and your family. When it comes to my family I WILL protect them at any cost. All this gun control bullcrap is nothing more than people wanting to have power over another group of people. That's all it is and all it's ever been.

I am and apparently so are 90% of those polled.

You probably already know this but I'll play anyway, the answer to the first part is universal background checks and the answer to the 2nd part is somewhat irrelevant since just because other issues are rated higher doesn't mean those polled dont care about sensible gun control.

As I've said here many times before, polls are skewed based on how questions are phrased. A number can be cherry picked out of a poll while leaving out the number for the follow up questions that would contradict the first result. https://www.ijreview.com/2013/04/47397-90-of-americans-support-universal-background-checks-really

"In every Quinnipiac University poll since the Newtown massacre, nationally and in six states, we find overwhelming support, including among gun owners, for universal background checks,” said Peter A. Brown, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute. “American voters agree with the National Rifle Association, however, that these background checks could lead someday to confiscation of legally-owned guns.”“The question is how many of these voters fear confiscation as an abuse of government power and how many are hoping the government uses confiscation to get more guns off the street,” Brown added."

So in the end, what do they truly support? It seems that many within the poll citing 90% think it could be a slippery slope leading to something they do not want; something CA and others have mentioned over and over.
