Link: Coach Saban to fans: Stay the full game or give tickets to someone who will!

I really believe this is mostly a student section (fraternity section) problem. Only on the complete blowouts do the paying customers clear out in hordes. The fraternities clear out on a regular basis.

They stay if it's a close game, but their "red line" for clearing out is a lot more generous than it is for most folks. I don't approve of it, either.

The obvious difference is that in your examples, those are free events that people attend to honor someone. This is entertainment that people paid their own money to attend. It is more comparable to attending a movie, concert, or the circus.
And in virtually all of those circumstances, leaving in the middle would be considered rude as well. I know a lot of artists, and believe me, none of them are like gee, I'm really happy those people got up and left in the middle of my set. The only movie reviews I've ever seen talking about people leaving in the middle of the movie, were talking about how horrible a movie was. It is still a sign is disrespect.

But, you are getting to the heart of the issue. Some people are fans, and some people are going to Alabama games to be entertained, and are not actually fans. No fan leaves their favorite group in the middle of a set. No one here is complaining that Kentucky, or Arkansas fans are leaving early. No one here is complaining that a recruit and his family are leaving early. People, (Saban included) are complaining that supposed Alabama fans are leaving early, and usually for no good reason (or a good enough reason that they never should have been there in the first place).

I am going to try and be Christian in my response. I have been a Crimson Tide supporter in many sports. I was at the Arkansas game last week. I do not get to go to many games because of finances and my schedule as a Pastor. This is the only game I could attend this year. Last I recall, this is a free country and I can do as I choose. I have been to many games in my lifetime and spent a great deal of my disposable income to be a fan in person. Usually, I do not leave before the game is over. I left at the end of the 3rd quarter last week because of the blowout. I had a 2+ hour drive home after a long day all day on campus. I had a busy day in front of me Sunday that started around 7 am and continued until 7:30 that night. Monday was the same schedule. Sunday is my work day. While the majority of you can do what you want on Sunday, my calling is to be in ministry on Sundays. I do not tell anyone how to perform their responsibilities to their job. None of you critical people know what I have to do and go through in my job just as I do not know about yours unless I know you. I left so I could have a little rest before getting to my responsibilities. If that offends you, I am sorry but do not tell me what to do with my time and money and infer I am not a fan because that is what is happening in this discussion.

I don't like to play this card, and it might get me a vacation, but I've spent too many years and far too much damn money on that campus for anyone to suggest I'm not "actually" a fan because I leave early. If this were an in person chat, you can be assured I would not take kindly to such an assertion. If I spend my hard-earned money on a ticket to watch my alma mater play ball and for some reason I need (or choose) to leave a little early in a game where our own coach is hoping our players don't score, I'll have words with any man who suggests I'm not actually a fan. How dare you.

And yes, I've left sets by some of my favorite bands, too. Life happens.

My dad is a pastor, as well, and this has colored much of my opinion on the matter.

Thank you.

If there wasn't a HUGE waiting list with people who would a) go and b) pay gooood money to get season tickets I'd have less of a problem with this. I in no way going to force attendance. That's absurd but the seating should change.

We all know that there are legitimate cases like yours; however, just looking at that South End Zone area it looks like most of those are not like your situation.

This could adversely affect recruiting and people may be leaving early in the future for REVERSE blowouts, i.e. Bama getting blown out by the opponent. That will be a sad occasion, but probably deserved.

Why not write a check, then sit home and watch the game. That way, you can still support the team, and then someone else can sit in your seat who actually wants to sit through the game. Heck, I'll consider you a good fan if you support the team without doing anything to their detriment.

This goes for everyone. You can all write a check, and support the team financially, and be secure in your fanhood. But, you go to the game, and you have a poor showing as a fan? Then you deserve to be called out for it. Obviously, sitting through four quarters isn't for everyone, so if it's not for you, but you're good with the money part, do that, I applaud that, but you leave an empty seat while players are still playing? That's rude.

Clearly though, for many people, and I've seen it expressed here many times, this is about entertainment, and isn't about supporting the team. They want to be entertained, and they get up and leave when it's not entertaining. Those are not fans, anymore than I'm a fan of Tom Cruise. I watch his movies if I find them entertaining, but I don't even like the guy otherwise.

Edit: My dad was a pastor to, and he wouldn't go to games because he thought the music they played was sinful. I respect people for their beliefs, and I'm not trying to start fights here or anything. I'm just saying, going to the game isn't for everyone, and there's a waiting list of people that would very much like to go and cheer for the team.

When you pay for my tickets, gas, and food you can tell me how long I can or can't stay to watch the scout team play the Helen Keller School for the Deaf and Blind while we're ahead 45-0. I wouldn't leave on a close game or even a blowout SEC game but even if I did it would still be my business and not your's.

People further down on the waiting list can donate more money to move up the list or buy tickets on the secondary market. Obviously they aren't true fans if they aren't willing to do this.

Well, I was pointing out how your examples were not comparable to a sporting event. Agree to disagree here. If you think it is disrespectful to leave a circus early then I can see how fans leaving a game early upsets you.

You know what's so darn funny here? I see some of the same people that explained why they can't go to A-Day and why it didn't matter (although to Saban, and the top QB in 2015, it matters), come here and explain why it's their ticket and they bought it and they can do what they want.

So you can't go when it's free, and you can't stay when it's not free. Ok...

You and I both know, leaving in the middle of a set, or leaving in the middle of a movie is a sign of disgust or disrespect. I haven't been to the circus much, but if you leave in the middle I'm thinking it's not because you were a big fan of the event.

The good thing about it being my life is that you don't get to tell me how to live it.
Nope, and neither does Saban. But, the good thing about freedom is that we can call you out on it. I know the deal, you know the deal. Some people are just uncoachable.

I just hope enough "fans" are, to make a positive difference, rather than the negative impact that they're making now.

My nephew's ticket pkg. broke down to $10.00 per home game -- darn, I thought that was a bargain. Of course, the price increases with the purchase of away games.

We're certainly not the only school dealing with this problem. Schools with traditionally great fan bases are experiencing the same issues. I read an article this week stating that Mississippi State will start selling beer & holding rap concerts to entice their students to stay for the entire game (fighting the issue head on with a head of beer).

I don’t consider myself an “old-timer” yet, but I have lived through my share of disappointing seasons. And unfortunately, there will (once again) come a time when we will struggle (and yes, even lose) to the Vols & Tigers. One thing's for sure – when students graduate & leave the University of Alabama, nothing will ever compare to the atmosphere of “game day Saturday” in T-Town. RTR!

My final post.
It's not a sign of disgust or disrespect. I left a Ben Folds concert this summer about 10 minutes early because my wife was at home alone and if I stayed for 10 more minutes, it would cost me over an hour in travel time. I wanted to see my wife sooner.
Ben Folds is one of my favorite musicians. I am going to see him again in March. Maybe Ben Folds would be upset with me. I don't know. But I bought the ticket and I will stay as long as I want. People have different reasons for leaving early. It is certainly not my place to tell others what they should do with something they bought with their own money.

I love your posts and passion Krazy. I think you make this a better site.
I may not always agree.

I dont go to many games. When I get to go, I stay til the end.

It's probably because I can't go very often that I stay to the end.
