No, it's worse for the roommate. Think of it this way: if you are in the car with your buddies and they knock over a liquor store you are also being charged. This other guy can and should be charged as an accessory to assault. You don't have to participate actively in the crime to be charged. Many years ago my uncle, who was asleep in the back seat of the car, was charged when his buddies decided to rob a store.
Some folks working at the PD and possibly the university may also be losing their jobs or more if some of these reports are accurate.
