JessN: Sources say Saban, Bama are close on contract

I agree but even with the no buyout clause I really don't think CNS would sign a contract extension and then leave. To me a signed contract extension implies that we have at least one more year of CNS as the HC.

What you're missing is that under the terms of the last contract he signed, CNS IS under contract with UA for next year. In March 2012, he agreed to a contract running through January 2020.

I saw that also yesterday, but didn't want to alarm the board. Powers has been an ally of Mack and he is thought to be the reason why Saban is not at Texas. There were reports that after CNS was contacted earlier this year by an influential member of the Univ. that he flat out refused the hire of Saban at Texas. So Texas without Powers and Brown = Saban is free to come in the minds of most Horns. So we will see if it is routine or not.

Yep. So if you don't think football is king in either Texas or Alabama, think again. Educating kids is secondary. Bass ackwards I know, but the powers that be place a lot of emphasis on winning.

No, I get that. I'm just saying that I don't think CNS is the kind of person that would sign a contract extension today if he had no intentions of staying for at least one more year even thought legally he could walk away at any time without a penalty. Signing the contract extension indicates to me a good faith effort to be the HC for at least one more year. Beyond one year then all bets are off because I do think CNS is seriously contemplating retirement soon.

Gus Malzahn is much more likely to go there than Saban is. He's younger, he'll install an offense that people will come to watch, and he'll win there too. Plus he's the flavor of the month.

What I'd like is for this to play out, Saban to stay here, and at the next media gathering in that "I'm your Master" tone say, "Maybe next time y'all will listen to me" interspersed with expletives.

Even though he's struggled...I could see Muschamp getting a hard look as well.

I agree on Malzahn though...he has the potential to make the biggest impact from day one.

People!

Can we PLEASE stop freaking out anytime a "source" from a UT themed message board puts something out there? At least wait until an unbiased 3rd party confirms it before we lose our minds.

And for the record, Orange Bloods (the source in the linked article above) "reported" that "sources" told them that Mack Brown would step down in early November. Guess what didn't happen in early November?

He would already be there if Auburn had lost one of its two last games, but you don't leave a team about to play for a National Title. That is why Les Miles is not the coach of Michigan.

I'm just not convinced that UT will be able to pick whoever they want, they may have to settle for their 5th or 6th candidate and perhaps it will be a coordinator or someone from a smaller program that is looking to move up. Perhaps someone like Mike Leach may be their best option. I'm not convinced that CNS has any interest in UT but that Sexton is using that as leverage to get something that he wants from UA.

I have never really understood the whole extension at this point in time anyway. I have always thought that Nick Saban is a person who will want to enjoy his life past his coaching career. I have never really seen him coaching past the end of the last extension he signed. I figured he might be looking to negotiate a bigger number - never saw him looking for more years.

Everything that has been put out is confirmed concerning Mack Brown and his support by Powers. It is a "wait and see" as far as the "rest of the story".

As for Mack Brown, again, we all knew it was coming shortly. Only the timing is "news," not the event itself.

As for Nick Saban, he is in Ohio right now recruiting three kids. He will be in the greater Houston area (Galena Park) tomorrow visiting with 'Bama LB commitment Zach Whitley.

My Texas buddy thinks their wish list is as follows: 1) Saban 2) John Harbaugh 3) Fisher 4) Shaw

I like the Harbaugh and Shaw thought. I like Saban too, but he is ours. I have never really understood the Fisher thing though. He is very well respected for a coach that had a couple of good years at the Titans.
