JessN: Sources say Saban, Bama are close on contract

People!

Can we PLEASE stop freaking out anytime a "source" from a UT themed message board puts something out there? At least wait until an unbiased 3rd party confirms it before we lose our minds.

And for the record, Orange Bloods (the source in the linked article above) "reported" that "sources" told them that Mack Brown would step down in early November. Guess what didn't happen in early November?

And I can tell you for sure there was a lot of 'It's a done deal' talk going on here (Tennessee) around this time last year, about Jon Gruden.

And for the record, Texas is officially denying the reports that Mack Brown -- who is currently in Florida recruiting -- is stepping down.

Don't read much into that, though, they did the same thing a few months back with DeLoss Dodds. Probably just waiting on doing something more official on their end and don't want the story to run out in front of them (good luck with that, by the way).

From what I'm seeing now, UT is denying the reports that Mack Brown will step down. Not surprising, especially if details of his departure have not been finalized. OTOH, he may not be stepping down at all, and all of this worrying about Coach will turn out to be for nothing. Hope Coach stays, and I just think there are still challenges here for him... even new ones.

I like the Harbaugh and Shaw thought. I like Saban too, but he is ours. I have never really understood the Fisher thing though. He is very well respected for a coach that had a couple of good years at the Titans.

I don't see why Saban or Jimbo Fisher would leave their current jobs. I could see Shaw leaving Stanford for Texas just because it would be easier to be successful at Texas than Stanford. If Jimbo is a possibility for Texas even though he is in the National Championship game I would think that Malzahn would be too. I just don't think that Texas will get Saban, Fisher, or Malzahn. Also, why would John Harbaugh leave Baltimore for Texas? He just won the Super Bowl and even though Baltimore is not having a great year there is no chance that he will be fired for the next couple of years and I think that Baltimore will be back next season.

But like I said I could see Shaw going to Texas and I think that it would be a great hire for them.

Mack Brown to 247: "I'm in FL recruiting. If I had decided to step down I sure wouldn't be killing myself down here." Said not stepping down

Gotta love the craziness of what major college football has become. I know these guys make millions up millions, but I don't envy them at all with what they have to put up with.

UT has much better facilities and more money than FSU...that's why.

I'm starting to feel bad for Mack, he's done nothing but handle these rumors with as much class, & dignity as humanly possible..It's got hurt knowing your supposed fans are behind all these rumors & want you gone as their HC..And it only makes me wish that fanbase nothing but continued misery..

Interesting tidbit, in my eyes: ESPN and Saban have agreed for him to be in Pasadena, doing TV commentary for the BCSNCG.

Reading the tea leaves, wouldn't think he would be so eager to be in front of a camera in such a public capacity in the immediate aftermath of a big backlash and controversy over (another) departure. Kind of seems to be like a guy who plans to be operating about like normal come early January.

Or a guy that would be putting together a staff.

Or a guy recruiting for a different school.

I have never really understood the whole extension at this point in time anyway. I have always thought that Nick Saban is a person who will want to enjoy his life past his coaching career. I have never really seen him coaching past the end of the last extension he signed. I figured he might be looking to negotiate a bigger number - never saw him looking for more years.

For the sake of recruiting you can't just coach until the end of your contract. All recruits want to see that a coach has at least 5 years remaining on his contract. I think a lot of contracts may have an automatic 1 year extension built-in but it is almost the rule and not the exception to renegotiate a contract every year. Especially for the more successful coaches.

I was just looking at the fact that Florida State is a very good job and probably one of the top jobs in college football right now. I understand the thing about facilities and money and I know that it does come into play. Also, I know that conference perception comes into play also when these decisions are made and The ACC is a weak conference and I think that the Big 12 is a better conference.

Saban's current contract runs through 2020.
