I still want Earle's perspective on all this. Did anything even close to this "reported" offer come from Texas, and if so, what kept CNS here? I very well remember that Earl had some info pertaining to Alabama taking care of some bad investments etc. So at the end of the day what did UA really pay Coach Saban? If Texas really offered a $10-15 Million bonus and then a $100 million contract and "all" UA did was offer $7 million per year something makes no sense at all. Either the story is bogus, or UA ponied up a whole lot more than is officially stated, or Coach Saban just won the most loyal coach in history award by taking a $50,000,000 pay cut for the life of the contract.
There were some off the board incentive offered which won't appear in his formal contract...

At the time, and I was sweating a bit, I was hearing figures in the range of $50-$60 million. After he turned that down, I just quit worrying and started believing everything he said about staying here...
$50-$60 million over how many years?

If the stories are true, Mrs. Saban had a lot to do with leaving Miami. The opposite could be true here, she wanted to stay.

My thing is, why did he turn down lot of money to stay at Alabama? Was it the fact the Booster was too involved? Death to his career for job hopping?

Umm so are we talking about CNS and Texas or Mark McGwire and Pete Rose???

Anyways Fran left because of probation and Alabama was at a low point. The university is worth a hell of a lot more now and let's be real Alabama is not a stepping stone, they are the top.

Do I believe the short horns would pay Saban that much??? Yes I do. Does anyone know what Charlie Strong's buyout is???

I don't get why schools have buyouts in coaches clauses from this point of view: why would you want somebody to be where they don't want to be? Do it like BAMA does where there is no buyout either way. We can get rid of CNS and owe him nothing and he can leave without penalty.

One reason for his staying could be he wanted to restore his reputation after leaving Miami.

I'm sure glad he stayed!

Well IMO when u have a buyout you're pretty much expecting that you'll be fired...

I got the idea from Earle that Saban MIGHT BE seriously considering it. Earle is not an alarmist and he didn't say the sky was falling but he was treated rudely too by some antsy folks here. My thought was he was giving it serious consideration based on an accumulation of signals.

I thought you were here and our thoughts were at least superficially similar. I doubt he was actually waiting on a plane then reneged but it wouldn't surprise me if the Terry in Austin story was true and that made him wary about what would get out.
There was a monster offer made and Saban (and Sexton, naturally) seriously considered it. The smokescreen of "not appreciated enough," and the house-hunting were actually true. I got them confirmed by sources totally outside the Bama loop by people, some of whom didn't want to see him come to UT. I'm talking about sources in Sexton's office and admins of Big12 boards. This is my conjecture, but I think he woke up to how much he would be owned 24 hours a day at UT. I understand some of the demands actually did come up just before he didn't take that trip. Was the plane trip canceled at the last moment? I don't know. It's not generally known, but his first contract with UA involved very strict limits on what events, etc., he would be required to make. He's loosened up very much over the years on that. UT would have been worse, 10x, over UA. I think, in the end, there were more important things than just the money...

I have no trouble believing that Texas offered Coach Saban an obscene amount of money. The program had been wallowing in mediocrity since we beat them. Similarly, I also have no trouble believing that that some overzealous UT boosters did something to mess up the deal. No matter how much trouble Bama boosters can be, Texas boosters are orders of magnitude worse--you could see that in the machinations used to shove Brown out the door.

There was a big effort from Texas boosters made for Coach, but the UT admin was divided on the issue. Coach Saban and Sexton listened, and Coach thought about for a nanosecond, but he was not going to leave Alabama.

Especially for a place like Texas, who has multipe guys thinking they are steering the ship.

This WAS a message to the ole Battle Axe. though

Hey CF , the comparison you make has absolutely nothing to do with what I posted . You are comparing coaches salaries, I am pointing out that players will eventually demand changes that will be upheld in court. This is being expedited by huge coaches salaries(2 mil/ year may be the norm, but that is a lot of money),and football palaces being built(Kyle field is being renovated for more than the construction cost of retractable roof Reliant stadium). Eventually the players are going to ask 'where's mine?' . I don't want to hijack this thread so this is my last comment on it.

It is more than 50 mil when you take into account Texas has no state income tax. Either Texas is very broken, coach is very loyal or the story is very inaccurate.
