If they offered him that I wouldn't even be mad at him for leaving. He couldn't turn that money down. Anyone mods or anyone else in the know, would Bama have matched Texas dollar for dollar no matter the amount.
From what I gleaned from several horn sites while this was unfolding, no (IMO) to your question and yes to what PF is saying. They wanted CNS no matter what they said after the fact and they would have made him the highest paid coach in America by almost double. I am glad CNS turned them down, but it was only because it was the horns and all the crap he would have had to deal with. It definitely wasn't because of the money. I heard from what at first glance I considered fairly reliable sources he was being offered well north of 10 mil - I was called crazy for believing that, but now it appears at least I'm not crazy by myself!

Its a specialty profession. Those type jobs are independent of the economy.
like I said, I just simply disagree.

true, it's a specialty profession, so is university professor.

nick sabama makes about 100x what a professor at Alabama makes.

I know that coach Bryant famously said that 50,000 people don't show up to a chemistry class, but I find it ridiculous.

There was a monster offer made and Saban (and Sexton, naturally) seriously considered it. The smokescreen of "not appreciated enough," and the house-hunting were actually true. I got them confirmed by sources totally outside the Bama loop by people, some of whom didn't want to see him come to UT. I'm talking about sources in Sexton's office and admins of Big12 boards. ...
I hate to think that article in the Wall Street Journal, with the underappreciated hang-wringing, was simply a smokescreen, or distraction from the fact that Miss Terry had actually been house shopping in Texas. That doesn't suggest a very warm feeling towards the Bama fan base.

At the time, I think the most honest and direct statement Saban said about leaving Bama was that he was simply too old to start over. I think that was his bottom line. Not loyalty to the Bama fans. Not keeping his word given a year before about retiring from Tuscaloosa. He was simply too old.

As far as the money...people making 7 million a year can afford just as nice a car as someone making double that. With a little prudent budgeting, Saban can have a nice lifestyle on his Bama paycheck.

The final point that comes to mind...I suggested Saban should have offered Sexton's head on a platter to the Bama fans because of the Texas mess, or at least fired him. If Sexton's office was or has leaked Saban inside info, then that's another reason to fire him.

If Saban would fire Sexton, the Texas mess would be a little easier to swallow for me. I still think it had a big negative effect on the team's chemistry as we tried for the three-peat.

So how do they get their money???
I don't know about Texas or TN but, I lived in Orlando for 10 years and FL makes it up with property taxes and the lottery. My wife and I tried to buy a house in Orlando a few years before we moved back to Montgomery and property taxes were the main reason we had to back out. This was the first time we had ever tried to buy a home and we didn't know all the right question and our realtor did a crappy job explaining things to us. About 2 weeks before closing he finally informed us that our property taxes were going to be just over 2,000 a year (this was back in 2006). They don't roll that back into your mortgage like they do here in AL, that would have been a separate bill that we had to pay each year. The mortgage was already going to be stretching us pretty thin at the time so the extra property taxes just made it to risky.

I agree with you on this. If Alabama is truly where he wants to be Sexton is a liability at this point. He can get someone else to take care of other business. I will say this, and I know I will get crucified, if he flirts with another school after this season I hope he doesn't let the door hit him in in the rear end on the way out. He is the best coach in the country and by far the best we've had since Coach Bryant but enough already.

I'm so happy Birmingham and Hoover don't have any...now what in the world could make any Texas booster think they could simply but CNS away?? They act as if this state/University has no money. Do you think it hurt Texas and A&M back with $$$ and attendance in the 60's when the Cowboys came around???

You are assuming rational thought processes by arrogant and delusional people.

I would add they should have known from 1997 that Texas is not the pearl. Mack was their THIRD choice.

I take comfort knowing Saban gets older each year, just like everybody else. I'm not looking for any more leverage plays or actual flirting with other schools because, as he said, he's too old to start over.

Guys, I love Alabama football, but if they offered me $100 million, I would have to follow Texas football boards. :) I am glad Coach Saban stayed with us. I just hate that this mess is coming up again. You would think it would eventually die down, but I guess the book needs to sell.

Yeah, I understand it's mostly about leverage. Loving Alabama the way most here do it brings out very strong emotions.

Considering all that Coach Saban has accomplished at Bama, he certainly deserved a hefty raise this past year. The overall pay for coaches has increased dramatically the last few years. Consider that Tennessee and Arkansas pay there coaches north of $3 million. I am glad we continue to make Saban the highest paid coach. No one can blame him for considering a $100 million contract, if these stories are true.

I believe Coach Saban realizes he has a real chance to do something Historical here at Bama.

I'm reminded of the old joke...

A wealthy gent asks a nice lady if she would sleep with him for a million dollars. The woman reluctantly agreed, "that's a lot of money."

The gent then says, "Now let's talk about a more realistic figure."

"Sir!" she replies, "what do you think I am?"

"We've already established what you are, now we are down to haggling about the price."

Not sure I believe any of this.
Nor do I. I believe that he was given a significant offer, but $15MM signing bonus (to make his debt issues go away) plus a $100MM contract (with additional $$ based on performance) is crazy when you consider that he will probably retire within 5 years.

He would be worth it to Texas if he guaranteed that he would stay at least 10 years, but I just don't see that happening.

Agree. It seems a little convenient that Finebaum saved this nugget for his book. If there was truth to it, I think Finebaum would have dropped this during the chase or shortly after. And I think it would have been substantiated or reported by at least one other reputable party by now.

My guess is that Finebaum got this figure from "UT sources". And we know how reliable they've proved to be.
