New coach search...

Bazza, I mentioned earlier in the thread that I think Miller would be a god candidate/choice. He is a coach’s son and played at NC State, so he has knowledge of the south. In an interesting side note that means absolutely nothing, he is from Beaver Falls, PA. I think I’ve heard of that place.

As for Miller’s comments about being happy in Dayton, what else is he going to say at this juncture? Of course he’s going to claim his family likes life in Dayton, the program is on the rise, all those things you say when you have a good job and want to keep it. Marshall has consistently made the same claims. What makes one believable and the other not?

^ Bold: A strong recommendation!

If you told me that you where going to pay a million bucks a year to coach against Cal, Anderson and the used car salesman down at API I'd say "Where do I sign?" There is no shame in "getting beat" by Kentucky or any team! But when you are the reason for "losing" to those teams that's a different story. I think most coaches are competitors. If you're scared of getting beat then you shouldn't be coaching!

Hmmm..ok.

Being easily being the top coach in your conference, a sweet sixteen coach every year, rather than facing Calliparri, Anderson, etc, every night in the SEC and running the risk of being a high paid bust!
I don't know. Other than that, I can't imagine.

You along with many other Bama fans grossly undersell Bama's program. According to Forbes, it is the 14th most valuable basketball program in the country, 3rd in SEC.

family: who knows ? Tusc might be a great place for a Southern boy. Certainly prettier
recruiting base: Bama has acess to as many players with a better chance of getting them.
Fan support: Probably a wash with same success
Happiness: who knows?
Facilities: probably Bama
Tradition: close; Bama 20 appearances, 8 sweet 16's, 1 elite 8, arguably no 2 in SEC reg season. WSU 12 NCAA appearances, 6 sweet 16's, 4 elite 8's, 2 final 4's

That does not consider Bama's prestige as an overall athletic program and transcendent football program. As well as the no 36 public Inst academically, no 7 public law school, no 22 overall, etc. Yes, all of that matters.

Exactly why i thought those reasons he listed included a LOT of reasons to come to the SEC. Big time coaches want big time competition. If He didn't he'd still be at Winthrop but he left. I have know idea if we can pull him out of Shocker land but it wouldn't surprise me terribly. I think we might have a Les Miles situation to Michigan though and something or someone will screw it up.

Bama has a ton of bball talent but it leaves. A real solid coach could change that and put them in the hunt again. Right now they have no real shot at the elite talent.

You seem to have low expectations for Alabama basketball and that we don't deserve the chance to sit at the table with Kentucky's of the world.

I kept a scorebook, listening to the radio, in the early 70's when we beat beat Manhattan, on a last second shot by Glen Garrett, in the N.I.T.
My Mom and I jumped up and down and ran through the house. Dad chuckled and said, "I told you we'd be 'em".
I was a student at Bama, in the 70's, when we were ranked as high as number two in the nation.
I remember Florida's student section storming the court because they miraculously beat "Alabama" on a tip in at the buzzer.
Think about that.
My buds and I watched us lose a heartbreaking game to Indiana in 1976, in the Mid-East Regional.
That Indiana team was the last team to win the national title undefeated.
We had a three point lead with three minutes left.
Don't tell me about my low expectations. I have incredibly high expectations.
I've seen how good we can be, and have been.
But I can tell you one thing. We're going to have to take a chance on a coach.
No "PROVEN" head coach is going to take the job at an average SEC basketball program.
Especially when the team is playing in the same arena as it did when I was a student 40 years ago.
Say what you will, I'm telling the truth.
Riddle solved?

Every coach we get is a "chance"! Grant was supposed to be that coach, didn't happen. I remember the good old days also, but they can always get better. We can compete, but we can't be scared of the competition ! We can either feel negative about it or we can put positive energy into. Don't give up though!

I accept that Coleman Colesium may not be the best arena but it is no where near the dump that people try to imply that it is. The arena is also not the reason why it it not packed for basketball games. If it was the case, the gymnastics team would not consistently pack the arena for their meets.

As far as playing in the same arena for 40 years, we have been playing football for longer than that in BDS. I realized that BDS has undergone many renovations and additions since the 70s. However, most of that was spurred by demand for additional seats which is not the case for basketball. While I love BDS, there are parts of the lower bowl that look the same as they did when I was a student 30 years ago. If I am not mistaken, renovations were done on Coleman a few years ago.

While a new arena would be nice, I just don't think that it is the top priority for the program right now. Giving the fans a product that is entertaining and successful is where we should start IMO.

Cary Clark responded in a thread from another site that unless something changed in the next week Marshall would be the next Bama coach. He said this was according to "sourced info".

i.e., Marshall has agreed in principle. Darron Boatright, former Bama staffer for 8 years, has been the Sr. Associate AD at WSU for 5 years. He likely been giving Marshall the scoop on Bama.

If I am the AD at Wichita and Marshall leaves after Boatright's scooping, I'd tell Boatright to go with him.

We we are one of the premier athletic programs in the nation as evidenced by the many national championships won the last few years. Now we are going to win one in basketball and Battle will bring in the guy to do that.

Forgive me if I'm wrong (and for piling on), but this appears to assume that a coach like Marshall is scared to face tough competition. My impression is that some coaches are hungry to go to battle against the best and to see whether they can compete. My hope is that he is looking for a bigger stage and that he thinks he can compete at Alabama.

I read where George Mason's top candidate is Steve Prohm.....just fyi....hopefully we get Gregg Marshall and it doesn't matter

I'll say this about Marshall. It's obviously not about money. If so, he would have taken other opportunities. Well, it's not ONLY money, at least.

I really think the sale job has to be focused on how Saban was a good, national championship coach when he arrived. When he leaves 'Bama, he'll be on the Mount Rushmore of college coaches, one of the best ever. A four-time national champion who has built the greatest program in the modern era of college football. He was a good coach, but when given the resources and support provided by the Alabama Athletic Department, administration, and fans, he became legendary.

We have to convince Marshall that the same thing can happen in basketball.
