New coach search...

Regarding attendance: it seems the games that I watched were half empty except for Kentucky and Auburn.
Capacity is 15K I believe, but Alabama has been up in the 12, 13K range (average, a few years ago) which is a good size crowd for a basketball game. I imagine some of the games of lesser interest did dip towards the being half full, but I've seen posters who go to games who didn't seem to realize how good the attendance was in relation to other programs.

I don't think there's any doubt they can pack the place if Alabama is playing good basketball, but as has been said, Alabama fans like winners. It's been hard to watch the basketball team play, and it is true that there are not as many die hard fans in basketball as football, but could I blame anyone for not watching the Mike Shula Alabama teams? Not really...

I had a 5 game pack last year, and outside of UK, the place hauntingly empty.... those numbers are people who bought tickets, not those who actually attended.

Just to add some reality to this discussion, here are the attendance figures from last season. Bear in mind that Alabama had a horrible year, and the Shockers went undefeated through the regular season:
"35. Alabama 17 1 82,825 10,754
36. Wichita St. 17 182,452 10,732"

So, how on earth can they argue they have better fan support?

That may be the tickets sold, Kraze, but there's no way that many people were in the seats.

As we are approaching 4pm CDT, I think that this search has now gone into 'unusual' territory in that there hasn't been a legit leak from either side about what's happening. Makes me believe that CBB made his pitch, and then CGM is legitimately listening to
either a counter-proposal from WSU, or is waiting on another job to open that he is interested in, or both.

I just don't remember an AD doing what CBB did and not having an answer (that we know of) this late after the fact.

FWIW:

We all have our sources... A sister of a brothers uncle who know someones dad, etc. With that said I know a very well respected major Bama donor. Had a brief conversation a few minutes ago. He is under the impression that Marshall is ready to make a move but has to have family on board or its not going to happen. I had figured by lunch today we would know something one way or the other. The fact that there has been no confirmation from WSU that he is staying, tells me GM does in fact have major interest himself but he will not do without everyone in his family being on board so he is giving them time to think everything through. I don't believe the Friday deadline. He had 48 hours from yesterday to make a decision. It will all be over with tonight or by noon tomorrow one way or another where GM is involved.

There you go.. Another vague source but I figure I might as well share.

"Gary Parrish on 610 AM: from what I've heard from people close to the situation, Gregg wasn't blown away by Alabama yesterday. My best guess is he is back at Wichita next season. He's not a priority at Texas because their AD is a weirdo."

From a WSU board. Doesn't sound promising, though. Maybe their people close to the situation are as clueless as some of ours seem to be.

I tried reading the WSU message board and decided ITAT made more sense. One guy said the only good coached we had were Newton and Sanderson and we fired both of them. (Yes, we did fire Wimp, but that had nothing to do with basketball).

Alabama is the 14th most valuable basketball program in the country according to Forbes. Yes, attendance in and of itself can be misleading, but it's just one of many indicators that Alabama basketball is well supported.

If Alabama lands Marshall, I can't find anything to complain about. My main issue was with his team beating Kansas, it both had to have given him more hope and kept him off the market longer. I won't become critical until Alabama gets to plan B without having any good options, then it's time to worry.

Exactly. If Texas had made it to the Sweet 16 and WSU didn't, it would have been the reverse situation.

Though if Texas had in fact made it to Sweet 16, then maybe Barnes stays. I guess we could play "what if" all day. ;)

Sounds like maybe we should have sent Ms Terry to Wichita ....

You say that jokingly I assume. However, had Saban and Terry flown out and made a cameo late yesterday afternoon it could have made one of the biggest splashes ever. It would have been risky but talk about making a statement.

Gregg wasn't blown away by Alabama yesterday.
I hope this is another report that seems to be full of crap (like the Forde one), but... I am confused that they met for so long and what there is to discuss.

Battle has 30 million a year to play around with, what could Marshall want that he couldn't say yes to? What promise can't be kept? Marshall can't ask for more than virtually unlimited funds and autonomy, so I don't see what the issue could be.

I only hope there is no issue, but... if Alabama didn't offer him free reign and a blank checkbook I can't imagine why not, Marshall knows what he's doing. What kind of thing could Marshall have asked for that Battle would have said no to?

I think he is talking it over with his family today...There is still no decision at this point.
No reason to freak out yet...but close...:)

This!! I don't understand why everyone thinks the family is not a major part of this decision. I don't care how much money it is. He is not going from a 50K job to a 7 figure one. You may end up making a final decision for your family but a good strong family man values how his wife and kids feel about a move like this.

That's my line of thinking. When mama ain't happy, nobody is happy!
