New coach search...

As many have said, I think I like this hire better than CGM. The obvious thing about CAJ is that he is very personable and outgoing. This is the antithesis of CAG. Thank goodness!! He has a really good NBA coaching resume and I am confident he can coach at the college level.
I am really excited about this hire. I think CAJ will turn a lot of recruits to the Capstone!

I thought so as well Flum & gets me even more excited about this coaching hire..I honestly think Bama has made the best B'Ball coaching hire in the last couple of years in the SEC & that includes The Barn hiring Pearl..Coach Johnson will elevate our B'Ball Program recruiting, cause you know recruits will be in awe of Coach Johnson, sitting in their living room recruiting them, this was Bill Battles "Homerun Hire" as our AD & has already energized our B'Ball Program before he's even introduced as our new B'Ball HC..

Excellent analysis.

I'm super excited about the hire, and this is a hire that I can feel comfortable with. I never was comfortable with Coach Gregg Marshall, and the way he handled this. CAJ has the " it" that can elevate the program to a new level that we've been missing for a while. With the 9 players returning to the team and 2 signee and .... We could be real good next year. He's real good at developing players, and this should be interesting in the fall to how he coach up the players.

Would you call Anderson/Arky a better hire than Pearl/ Alabama Polytech? Don't we also have to concede Miss State/ Howland was a big time get? I also suspect Barnes soon will be a tough out in ObKnoxville.

Ok, the analysis brought up his staff. Time for you guys to fill in the blanks. Names? More importantly, is the checkbook open for them too?

Moderate conflict of interest. For TAMU (If he wants to go)

Someone with more basketball insight could fill us in?

I kept bringing up Avery Johnson in this thread only to be poo-poo'ed, scoffed at and ignored. This is the type of hire we should have led with, not CGM, who didn't even want us. Maybe CGM was the Rich Rod fake out.

Umm... not sure I would say that to a coach who was generously listed as a 5'11" point guard and nicknamed "The Little General"

First Barner response I saw was a reference to CNS's and CAJ's collective height. I guess that means the Barners are already getting nervous about this hire!

This is where CAJ is a better hire than Marshall...

“I think what it does is it obviously helps us with recruiting because he’s a former player and NBA Champion, and he’s the former NBA Coach of the Year. I think that gives him that credibility that when he comes and sits in a living room or talks to kids, they’ll automatically listen to him.”

Also, Jeff Goodman mentioned CAJ helping Tyler Davis land at TAMU. I looked Davis up on 247. Anybody think we could somehow get him to back out of his NLI to TAMU and sign with Bama? He's the #5 center in the nation at 6'9, 269. Profile

I was initially concerned at the possibility of CAJ because of his lack of college coaching and recruiting experience. But I am warming up to it as I see that excitement that he imparts in people. He may be just the shot in the arm our program needs.

It is certainly a gamble, but there aren't many if any sure things available on the coaching market. Even CGM would've been a risk, and certainly every other realistic name that circulated as potential candidates would be.

To me, the keys will surrounding him with veteran recruiters and X-and-O college coaches on staff, as well as a buyout structure that prevents him from making a quick jump back to the NBA. Because the threat of him going back will certainly be used against us in recruiting.

But I'm excited about the power of his personality and the chance for him to energize our program and raise its profile as we become a contender again.

I like his resume, but he's been out of coaching for a few years. I'd be interested in knowing why he opted to go to work for ESPN instead of remaining in the profession. Did he burn out, or just want a break from managing a bunch of millionaires in shorts and sneakers? Either way, this will be totally different than what he's used to, he'll need to be a good teacher, recruiter, and salesman.

From everything I have read, he has consistently missed coaching and has planned to return to coaching if he could find a situation that was right (read: not bottom-barrel NBA team with a GM above him and unrealistic expectations). The part that impresses me is that he contacted us without ever mentioning interest in college coaching, even though the more I think about what he's said he wanted, the better college coaching would suit his interests.
