episcopal church votes to allow gay marriage in churches. many diocese' were already doing this, but now it is official policy. there are already a couple of denominations allowing this as official policy and a couple others who allow the individual churches to decide.

Everything is so tightly centrally controlled in the UMC (we rival the Catholics), it can't even be voted on until the next General Conference. It's never left up to individual churches. My own pastor thinks that it will be close and there is some talk of it's causing a split in the denomination...

it sounds like some umc pastors are doing ceremonies as "protest". the episcopals sort of battled this out back in 2003 when robinson became a bishop.

good commentary from Godless in Dixie an Ex Baptist southern atheist blogger

http://www.patheos.com/blogs/godlessindixie/2015/06/26/upon-the-legalization-of-gay-marriage/

As you have almost certainly heard, earlier today the Supreme Court announced a 5-4 victory for supporters of marriage equality and a defeat for Team Evangelical. I implore you to take a step back for a second in order to look at this situation in a different light from the one to which you have become accustomed.
The cheerleaders for Team Evangelical have gotten everyone worked up into a lather over this, but I suspect much of their zeal has been misplaced. Over the past couple of weeks we’ve read of one straight couple in Australia who say they will divorce if gay marriage is approved by their government, we’ve read of a pastor who essentially offered to set himself on fire or be shot in order to prevent it from coming to pass, and Glenn Beck has said that he has upwards of 10,000 pastors on hand ready to die in order to resist this single change. Whoa, there, hold your horses, folks! Can we put down the cray for a second and talk some sense into this situation? Please?
I do see one or two legitimate losses for you in this outcome, but I also see some imaginary ones and I’d like to offer my perspective as to which ones are which.

break the law pay the price. They should have baked the cake. You want to do business in Oregon, the law requires that you treat everyone equally regardless of sexual orientation. This is no different than refusing to serve someone because they are black.

Yeah, those Christian bakers are confiscating the property of gays and stringing them up from the end of a rope left and right. And don't forget the special oven they have in the back too.

A little food for thought.

Edit: removed because YouTube commenters don't follow TFNS language policy (the video itself is okay, but for some reason I can't get it to embed), but it's an undercover video and opinion piece by Steven Crowder who tries to get Muslim owned bakeries to make a gay wedding cake.

Wrong. Oregon is violating the 1st Amendment. There is no Amendment overriding it or allowing Congress or the states to make law to do so. And its just plain wrong. It violates freedom of speech, religion, and conscience. I might make a different choice, but we shouldn't force others to do our bidding or financially destroy them and deny them the right to speak about it because it hurts our feelings.

oregon has had in place for a while a non-discrimination law that specifically lists among protections sexual orientation.

You fail to acknowledge that Oregon also has a constitution which protects religious freedom:

Section 2. Freedom of worship. All men shall be secure in the Natural right, to worship Almighty God according to the dictates of their own consciences.
Section 3. Freedom of religious opinion. No law shall in any case whatever control the free exercise, and enjoyment of religeous [sic] opinions, or interfere with the rights of conscience.
Note Section 3.
