Re: Heisman finalists announced on 6pm Eastern (5pm Central) on Sportscenter ESPN2
If McCaffrey is so great and the best player in the nation, why in the red zone they are putting someone else in the run the ball? I still haven't heard the answer to that. Is it good coaching? If it is then the coach is saying you aren't good enough to carry it in from the ONE YARD LINE. But yeah, he's the greatest player in the league. I guess NW must have the best defense in the nation.
I don't want to take anything away from McCaffrey, he's special and in years in which there's no other obvious choice, just choosing a raw stats guy makes sense. But...
Let's take a closer look
Rushing stats:
Yards/AVG/TDs
McCaffrey 1847/5.8/8
Henry 1986/5.9/23
There's no contest there of course. It isn't just that Henry has more yards and a better average, he did it against better defenses, and he lead his team to bigger wins. The touchdowns though? Nearly three times as many? There's no question at all who the better running back is. Henry ran it when everyone knew he was going to run it, and still couldn't be stopped. Some people are treating McCaffrey like Reggie Bush, but he's not. Reggie averaged 8.7 per rush, and he found the end zone 19 times in his senior season. He didn't have as many empty yards, but he had more meaningful yards.
Receiving:
Yards/AVG/TDs
McCaffrey 540/13.2/2
Henry 97/9.7/0
McCaffrey has a clear edge here, but it's also a bit misleading. Henry is a key blocker on a lot of plays, so while McCaffrey might have more big catches, Henry has more big blocks. Though, admittedly if Henry had his 2014 stats with two TDs, the gap would be more narrow.
Returns:
Yards/TDs
McCaffrey
1109/1
These are empty numbers, as I said before. He's not even a good punt returner, but they used him there the last game just to pad total yards. It was clearly the plan.
While we shouldn't forget Henry played tougher defenses and set/tied SEC records. Let's just set that aside. Let's forget empty yards to. Let's forget it's Alabama that's still in contention.
Henry 2083/23
McCaffrey 3496/13
This means Henry had 59% of the yards McCaffrey had. McCaffrey had 56% of the touchdowns Henry had. Now you tell me which is more important, touchdowns or yards?
We can set aside all the other reasons, just the raw stats favor Henry. If he doesn't win, it will be a great example of bias.
