Baylor needs to hire some good lawyers (Update: Briles Fired, AD and Starr Resigns)

Student loans, as opposed to grants, count too. I promise that number makes $2.5M in student grants and $16M in research pale.

I remember some time ago, the Feds came down on a small Christian college for some sort of something that was rooted in their interpretation of the Bible. The Feds' complaint was in turn rooted in Title IX.

For this very reason, the school had taken great pains to refuse any and all federal monies, and the primary defense was that Title IX therefore didn't apply to them. But because a number of students had received federally-funded or federally-guaranteed student loans, and the school had received the money, the courts ruled that Title IX did apply.

I personally think it was a bad ruling. But next time a federal judge asks my opinion on anything will be the first time. Like it or not, that's the law....unless it's been overturned since then, and I'd think I'd have heard about that.

Bottom line, though, is that Baylor undoubtedly comes under Title IX.

Yeah I did see that they have 640ish students with federal grants and aid totaling $2.5mil. Not small potatoes but not shaking in their boots over Title IX either...

Regardless, they just need to man up, do the right thing & forget this silly notion of bringing Briles back.

Wonder if they have considered hiring Mike Singletary?

Yes he is on their list. However, he was passed over for Briles.

Come on Baylor, you just can't do this kind of stuff! These good Baptists need to rebuild their image and put football on the back burner for a while.

Yeah - I should have said "reconsidered". I saw the transcript of a radio show the other day where they asked Grant Teaff if he would consider taking over.

Attention all families everywhere, please do not send your daughters to Baylor. The good "Christians" that run this so called "Christian" university have proven that they couldn't care less about the safety of female students as long as they are winning football games.

You know, Christianity would be so much better if all you fake Christians would get out of the way. Any board member that votes to bring that despicable man back is not a Christian.

If the parents of students at FSU are any indication, parents don't really care either. It seems that fans are willing to totally overlook the failings of their celebrities, even at the expense of their children.

To me, Baylor is a Christian university in same way that Harvard is a Christian university - it really isn't. So I don't buy into any angle with people calling them hypocrites because they are supposed to be at a Baptist school.

The religion at these schools is football.

With Baylor it wasn't always that way. Back in the 70's there was definitely a different atmosphere on campus vs UT, Tech or TAMU

Hate to agree, but the evidence is overwhelming. Remember how many parents were clamor one for their little boys to spend the night at Michael Jackson's house, even after he paid a settlement for child molestation?

When I think of "Christian" schools, the standard to me are places like Southeastern University, Liberty, Regent University, Bob Jones University, or Evangel University etc etc.

Baylor is probably a more recent transition like you said, but it hasn't been Christian like it ought to be if it wants to still retain that moniker (as far enticing students to go there). Same Goes for TCU and SMU.

Heard on Cublic show this morning that BoT has said he will NOT be asked to return. Word is that they expect to settle with him for about 1/2 the 40mil he was owed under his contract - which is still mind boggling to me considering he was supposedly fired for cause. Not sure exactly what that says that they are willing to settle with a guy for that much unless they know the issue was known at a much higher level, which seems to be what he is implying in the story RTR posted.

Don't know if the new suit would have been filed anyway, but that was just one of the things that I thought might happen when it leaked that some on the BOT were floating re-hiring Briles.

Due to the silence from the BU administration (what there is left of it, anyway), I thought it was leaning the other way. Glad I was wrong on that, though I think the reversal of momentum was more due to public outcry than a revelation of conscience and character.

Briles' militance is not only burning any bridges that might have existed, but he's salting the earth and plowing it in. No going back now.

Regarding Baylor being willing to negotiate a settlement of his contract, I too wondered why they'd even consider it in light of Briles' wrongdoing. Then I remembered that so far, we've seen only a 13-page summary of the findings from Pepper Hamilton. The full body has been reported at over 50 pages.

Being the cynical curmudgeon I am, I'm betting the other 37+ pages include some pretty damning stuff on the University....stuff they'd just as soon not get out into the public record. If they settle with Briles, a gag order would certainly be a part of that settlement.

Maybe some of the TF legal eagles can answer this:
Suppose BU does settle, subject to Briles keeping his mouth shut. Subsequently, Briles is subpoenaed in relation to one of the pending lawsuits. The terms of the settlement wouldn't get him out of the obligation to answer questions in depositions or testimony. But if he does, would that violate the terms of the settlement? Or does Briles get around that by agreeing to the gag clause, with an exception for sworn statements made in the course of complying with a subpoena?

This could get real inna-restin'

At this point it seems Briles just wants a nice big nest egg for retirement. He doesn't deserve it, and I hope he doesn't get it. I do hope he stays retired though.

Not a lawyer - but I know during some of the trials related to the mortgage debacle a few years back some of the people compelled to testify had been paid to keep their mouths shut. Of course those were criminal trials and the Title IX deals are all civil (I believe) so there may be a difference.
