Horse Collar Penalty Saturday

Did they change what is considered a "horse collar" tackle or did I just never understand it correctly?

I thought a HC was making a tackle by grabbing inside the neck area of the front or back of the shoulder pads?

Saturday they called it for just grabbing the neck of the jersey itself

It has always been either. You cant tackle someone by grabbing the back of the collar or inside the collar and pads.

Not exactly correct. They recently change the rule to include the jersey (2017). Previously it was just the pads. We’re talking about it in another thread. I didn’t realize a change had been made until I read it there.

What was the deal about the delay of game penalty when the refs hadn't signaled the

Refs blew another call... (Delay of game penalty)
 
I consider the horse collar rule to be a good one. Much like the chop block, the potential for back and leg injuries from a horse collar tackle dictates this rule.

True, and most rules were created just for that purpose. The horse collar rule (back in my day) was called unnecessary roughness and was at the discretion of the ref. What I don't like is the way the roughing the passer and targeting rule has/is developing. I know it's for the safety of the players but it is a contact sport. Example, a receiver crossing the middle knows they are going to get hit, the defensive players (for the most part) are not targeting the head, but the receivers are bracing for the blow and it's instinct to "curl up and brace for the hit" which lowers the shoulder and head (think fetal position). At full speed it's tough for an opposing player to adjust. The horse collar is much of the same. The defense player (mostly Linemen in this case) is reaching out to make a stop usually with an opposing player still blocking. A lot of times he grabs the collar. I was a QB, ran the option. I can't count the times I was grabbed by the collar by a DE and only about 50% of the time were they called and usually the refs were correct.

HC is using the pads to bring a player down. That was obviously a terrible call by the officials. I wondered why we didn't get a review...

Huh!?! I wasn't aware of that change.
