Did Ben Davis See the Field?

There's still hope.. Sometimes it takes some years to click upstairs and sometimes they just don't have it. Not all 4 and 5 stars are ready in the first couple of years. Crap we knew Reuben Foster was a future NFL'er but it took him a few years to mature and prove he was ready and he was considered a can't miss prospect.

I was hoping we'd see Kaho getting some game time in the middle. I know he's playing special teams and is very aggressive too if you ever get a chance to watch him. If he went in at LB I missed him and I could have because it was H-O-T in there. Y'all know I work outside and it's miserable this time of year, but it was flat out hot Saturday. That was one reason the stadium emptied early in the East but it was never truly full period.

As has been stated over and over again, guys like Ragland, Rueben, Evans and even Wilson a bit, all took time to get into meaningful defensive reps, but they ALL played significant roles on special teams. Davis is not. Even Moody and Kaho are getting special teams reps and both appear to be pushing for 'starting' roles on those units if they haven't already grabbed them. Davis is not.

That said, happy he got a little experience against ark state. At least we got a glimpse.

Ben Davis is Redshirt Sophomore.
Foster was a true freshman, played in name games that season. Took over the starting spot Jr year after Ragland left.
Ragland was a true freshman, played in 10 games that season. Took over the spot in 2014.
Evans was a true freshman. Played in 13 games. Took over the spot in 2016 as Junior.
Wilson was a true freshman, played in 15 games. Took over the spot this year.

You cannot compare Ben Davis to those guys. Davis has played in total of two games during his career at Alabama. Those guys I mentioned played over 20 games by the time they were junior.

I am not sure that he will figure it out anytime soon. The best case scenario for him is to play better and play tough on the field... and I don't think we'll see that from him.

That's exactly the point I was trying to make - all our guys who 'emerged late', didn't really. They all played special teams and to a lesser degree in mop up or special packages LONG before they were ever called on to be a starter. About the only one that's not true of is Moses and he had to step into a regular role ahead of schedule last year b/c we just didn't have anyone else to do it.

He was seen on the sideline chatting with the players as he always does every week. I think it's safe to say Ben will not see the field for the rest of the season.

According to the participation report, Ben played - at least one play - against the Ragin' Cajuns.

Watch the video below. When Ben gets through his rep it sounds like Coach Lupoi says, “one more year in the weight room and it’s done”.

https://247sports.com/college/alaba...hristian-Miller-Anfernee-Jennings--122855742/
good catch - sound like that to me also. I'm guessing it was because he didn't get the second bag all the way to the ground. Some of the younger guys didn't either though, and they are getting more reps than Davis even now.

I’m saying this from the outside:
From what I’ve seen and read, maybe Earle is right - maybe he just likes playing the game but he doesn’t have the “killer” instinct to dominate. If that’s true he’ll never get any meaningful game time at Bama.

When I think of Ben Davis right now I think of Tyler Love—someone highly rated coming out of high school in the state but that simply never lives up to expectations. Didn’t he play HS in a lower classification in Pickens county somewhere? That might explain a lot.

Well, I think he was a five-star recruit, IIRC. OJ Howard was a five star from a small (1a or 2a) school, too. There was a period of adjustment for him, too, but it seems to have worked out well.

Yep, he played at Gordo.
