New basketball facilities can't be amortized out of football revenues. Are you aware that donors can earmark their donations for football or basketball - and do? Think...
Non-donor revenue for the athletic department for the last year I am aware was something like 140 million.

The last numbers I saw for the athletic department showed basketball as profitable, to the sum of millions (a sizable chunk of that 40 million dollar SEC payout also comes from basketball revenue). Alabama has spent tens of millions on the hiring/firing/salary of Grant and Avery. They have 115 million earmarked for Coleman renovations, I think the last major renovations cost 24 million.

So, I somewhat understand the complicated world of athletic department finance, Title IX compliance, etc... but what I see is a rich athletic department, with a ton of revenue, which for much of the time has actually siphoned money from the basketball program. Money has been spent, but aimlessly and wastefully, instead of enacting better, more purposeful long term plans. The program never actually got the kind of investment (and I mean more than just money, things like time, patience, and unwavering support) worthy of it's part as one of two revenue sports in the richest athletic department in the SEC.

I can't tell big donors what to do, they're going to do what they want. But I can say that the basketball program needed not just more money, or a new coach, but a much better long term plan. I hope Oats is the guy to sell everyone on it, but someone needs to.

You mean....hire a blowhard -- who likely is committing NCAA Violations that haven't surfaced yet?

No, I didn't forget the blue font
Yeah, I don't care for Pearl either, and I was shocked when people started talking about wanting Petino because that would have made me feel slimier than when we had Joey Freshwater roaming our sidelines wearing crimson. However, the results are what we end up looking at. I still like to think that we can win the right way, and I hope Coach O is the guy who can get it done.

Re: Alabama Set to Hire Nate Oats From Buffalo

Underwhelmed. Someone please explain to me the rationale for this hire. What on his resume is so impressive? I don’t see anything, other than some good years while coaching at the HIGH SCHOOL level.
I don't know. He's supposed to be the hot coach right now. He's taken Buffalo to the NCAA the last 3 years and just lost to Texas Tech which is in the elite 8 right now.

Y'all need to lay off Coach Newton. He built Bama basketball from nothing. Show some PRIDE! I think it's actually a bannable offense to talk bad about him (Though I'm no longer a mod!). That's all I've got to say about that!
That came out wrong. Not bashing Coach Newton by any means. I was just trying to say that the sky is the limit for coach Oats.

I got a text last night from a long time friend that grew up and lives in Buffalo. Actually is a Kentucky grad so you know the guy lives and breathes basketball. His comments:

"Congrats. You've got a great coach coming. What's most impressive about Oats is that he is "his own guy". He says what he means and he means what he says. Players love him because they know where they stand. He'll kick them in the fanny one minute and hug their neck the next. If you're playing, you know why your playing. If you're sitting on the bench, you know why your sitting on the bench and how you get off of it and back on the court. If he does what I think he can do, you may have trouble holding on to him."
Sounds like Saban

We'll cross that bridge if we get to it. But plenty of "not elite" programs have been able to hold onto coaches when the elites come calling. Hopefully he falls in love with Tuscaloosa and Alabama and makes us "elite."
Either way, I don't see it being a problem.... Let's say he does make us elite.

We are a flagship athletics university. Is there really any place better to go if we are making sweet sixteens every other year? As long as Saban is still here, then basketball is a great job once we are good there again

Alabama could hold onto a great coach if we could ever get one. Short of a man's dream job or the NBA, I'm not worried about our ability to keep a winner happy in Tuscaloosa.
I agree. I think maybe Michigan State is the only one I would worry about here. That would be much later thank god
