FBI Probe of College Basketball

Re: FBI Probe of College Basketball (Breaking - Wade Suspended)

The optics that Bama cheated in football but Auburn cheated in basketball is kinda funny knowing the desire of little brother to keep up with Bama.

I said before, when all this first broke, when we take our trips to the Florida panhandle, we travel through Brantley, AL. This is Chuck Person's hometown. And in front of the high school, right there on main street, they've got a prominent sign displaying that fact with pride. It's sad that things have turned out they way they have.

Pitino's escort scandal was investigated in 2015, this FBI and SEC found Marty Blazer in 2016. Even if you say that its too close together, Pitino has been very dirty before then to the point the NCAA was constantly trying to hit Louisville hard with something, and its kinda convenient that his firing only ramped up after they found that he was a part of the probe. Louisville has been hit way worse with this than any other team. Yes Wade from LSU was hit, but that is his dumb fault with his big mouth.

Didn't realize the escort scandal went back that far.

One reason Pitino was fired so fast was what all the investigation brought to light - his dealings with Adidas being a major one. I don't see how the NCAA could lead the FBI to orchestrate such a big investigation just to get him out of coaching.

I believe the NCAA has for years tried to get these coaches and vendors to stop being so blatantly obvious with it for years, and really never wanted the AAU issues to come to light because of the infestation it has on basketball would look horrible for the sport. But with Pitino , UNC, and others making them look stupid for all these years I believe it was at a point where the NCAA needed help changing the culture and reasserting dominance. I think the FBI getting involved in college sports only comes from well placed tips and cooperation from the NCAA. I don't think the FBI out of the blue found Blazer.

If we are to believe the early reports of the investigation, they didn't "out of the blue" find him. He was charged with committing other crimes and offered up some useful information to lessen his punishment.

[h=1]LSU, Will Wade Amend Contract as Part of Reinstatement[/h]
The details of the meeting between LSU and basketball coach Will Wade on April 12 are becoming clear. As part of his reinstatement, the coach made concessions in his contract, according to documents obtained by Sports Illustrated’s Ross Dellenger as part of a public records request. Under two amendments he agreed the school add to his contract, LSU can fire Wade for cause if he is found to have committed Level I or Level II NCAA violations, or if the NCAA infractions committee issues a formal notice of Level 1 or Level 2 violations to LSU involving the coach. Wade also agreed to waive the $250,000 in performance bonuses he contractually earned in 2018–19.

Re: FBI Probe of College Basketball (Breaking - Wade Suspended)

Again this whole probe is basically the NCAA's revenge against Pitino through legal means since they were incapable of slamming him for the escort service incident.
I actually think this makes the NCAA look worse, if I were the NCAA I'd want this to go away as soon and quietly as possible.

Re: FBI Probe of College Basketball (Breaking - Wade Suspended)

The fact that this timeline puts it well in the past aside, I don't see anything to be nervous about anyway.

I find it a little funny that IF stuff was going on, everyone acts like it suddenly stopped in 2014. The basketball stuff was going on right up to when the FBI showed it's cards. Just because this testimony only mention 2010-2014 doesn't mean it stopped there, maybe it stopped for Blazer but I'm sure there are other bag-men ready to pounce. I'm not saying Bama is in trouble. Just saying, at this point, it is a little naive to think this stuff stopped in football but continued in basketball. Truth of the matter is it's probably still happening, even with this trial in progress.

The context of his name being used isn't good, either.

The NCAA has it's fingers in it's ears and is saying 'lalalalalalala'. They are in Sargeant Schultz mode, and it's interesting to watch what happens. Advertisers don't usually like be associated with felons, so are they going to change tacks and disassociate themselves from college athletics because it is finally coming to light how sleazy all this is? Honestly, it's not likely. What is likely is that the whole country agrees to ignore whatever comes to light with this stuff because college sports just means too much to us, and we can't imagine life without it.

I am becoming more and more fond of the English system of football (soccer). They sign a kid to a deal when he is 10 years old and he (or she) progresses through their system until they either make the big club (Alabama), are loaned out to a lesser club so they get meaningful game experience and stay fit (Southern Miss), or get kicked to the curb where they have to go out and find another club to play for (Samford). Everyone knows where they stand with this system, and they have the FA to make sure it stays as it should. Gambling is completely legal and above board (heck, half of the squads have gambling services on the front of their shirts), and though I am sure over history someone has taken a dive or a referee has awarded a penalty when maybe there should not have been, I don't think there has been all of the sneaking around that goes on in college athletics every single day.

One day someone is going to pull a card off of the bottom of this house and it's all going to fall down. The NCAA needs to be working on ways to control the when and how hard it all falls. If they aren't they are bigger fools than they have been made to look by this blatant cheating they have allowed for way too long.
