Who will start at QB next year?

I think Mac played well against AU based on his experience. That shouldn't be an issue with the amount of blowout wins we had, but it is what it is. The 1st pick-6 was a bad throw. That happens to everyone. The 2nd pick-6 was a fluky play, but he should've thrown it into the stands. Again, that's a lack of experience. He seems a little slow throwing at times. He tends to wait until the receiver is open. Experience? Perhaps. Or maybe we're just spoiled from watching Tua.

Mac will be the starter going into fall camp and I expect him to hold onto the starting job as the season progresses. Based on what I saw in the IB, I think he'll be a solid QB for us. I see us moving back into a more balanced offense with a strong running game to match our passing attack. And I think that's good. I think we were too reliant on the passing game this year with Tua and our amazing talent at WR.

I haven't seen enough of Lia this year to have any idea if he can push Mac for playing time. I think he'll be a good one, but I'm not sure he can beat out Mac at this point.

The same can be said for Tyson. I haven't seen him play. I have no idea what he can or can't do. At least he'll redshirt this year, so that gives him more options long-term.

I've only seen a few highlights of Young. He looks pretty darn amazing. But so did Lia in his highlights...and Tyson...and Mac. That's why they're called highlights.

That's not out of the realm of possibility...I think he may have the highest ceiling of anybody on campus next year. It's all a matter of how fast he adjusts and picks up things. Glad he'll be here in the spring to get a head start.

I have no idea how good Young is, but one thing I think Saban learned from the Tua/Jalen situation is that if at some point it is clear to everyone in the program that the backup is the superior player then loyalty has to take a backseat to talent and production. I’m not saying that is going to happen, and I think Mac is a far superior passer to Jalen in his sophomore year.

I don’t want a running QB necessarily, but one area that Mac is lacking is identifying those running opportunities and making decisive decisions about where and when to run. He looked uncomfortable with that. Burrow does a nice job of it without having blazing speed.
 
Mac Jones will be the starter at QB next year assuming Tua does not come back.


He seems to be a pretty solid QB who is well built for the position which affords him a certain amount of toughness to stand in the pocket while under pressure and throw. He made a couple of throws he'd like to have back and he wouldn't have been making them in the Iron Bowl if he had gotten them out of his system v. teams earlier in the season when the margins weren't as tight.


I'm actually pretty confident we could win a national title with him if the rest of the team steps up. He may not be a star quarterback but he could be a very good one in offense more like 2014-2015.
 
Also, I'd caution against people projecting on the exploits of this high school commit we've got at QB. With how the QB position goes these days, it is probably just as likely that he's starting for Cal in 2021 off a transfer waiver as he is to be the starter for us in 2021. I don't really care too much about what they can do projected off what they have done against high schoolers. I didn't much care for the Tua hype until he got on the field in 2017 (the Vandy game specifically). I'm a show-me guy when it comes to quarterbacks. The position is not quite entirely about measurables. Even the ones that are indicators for QBs are sometime faulty (Brees and Wilson are elite NFL QBs with below average NFL QB desired height).

I'm not going to be against the kid's chances but he needs to be showing out in the Spring Camp & A-Day Game.

I'm betting Mac is the starter.

I'm also betting that Lia and Young will battle for backup, with Young winning the battle eventually.

But goodness knows my guesses may as well be shots in the dark...
 
Lia has a lot of his brother's zip on the ball but he's just as not as much of a finished product. He's more of developmental project like Mac Jones. I think it will pay off because I bet he's still around when Mac Jones goes pro after his RS Senior season in 2021.

You never know, Tyson could shock us all and win the job.

I want Selma to remember this thread and if Tyson does it, bring this back up, I will look like a genius.

I noticed that the receiver's have to stop to catch the ball or jump up to make a reception. Tua would throw where they caught the ball in stride and made yards on the run after the reception. You think maybe a timing thing?
 
I have no idea but I would pump the breaks in anointing Young the starter because we don’t know how he will perform against college-level competition. Mac-10 has the inside track at this point, it’s his to lose
 
I don’t think it’s ridiculous to see Tua, DeVonta and Najee come back. I think Jerry and Ruggs are gone. Leatherwood may be back. Wills is likely gone.

Move Leatherwood back to RT to help protect Tua.

It could very well be timing...he's only gotten #1 reps for just a few weeks and Tua and thoes receivers developed their chemistry over 2 years of throwing in the off season.


But, there's also a rare thing some people have that others don't and it's anticipation or vision to see something developing before it happens. I think this is what Tua had that made him special. It's something an elite point guard in basketball has too. They see things happen before the do.

I imagine this is more of a gift than a skill.
 
Mac earned it by his performance against Auburn. Now he has to go and work on few things in offseason. Tauila will get a chance, and I know everyone is big on Young and so am I, but we need to temper our expectations with Young. As it stands, it will be Mac, Tauila and Young on Depth chart in order for 2020.

That's one of the things I suggested that Mac to work on in the off season. It was more of timing issue. He will fix that.
 
I think Mac has a pretty clear inside track to the starting job. He's no Tua but he's a solid QB that knows the offense. It'll be hard to beat that.

However, if Young is as special as a lot of people think he is then its possible he could win the job. I've heard people say that he has great football IQ so maybe he can learn the playbook quickly enough to play a real roll in the competition.


But as of now, I'm expecting Mac to be our QB next year.

Agreed. It's a combination of timing and pure talent. Tua is the best I've seen. His accuracy is amazing. But he also has the ability to anticipate where the defender will be and throw the ball to the open spot, which also protects our receivers from getting pounded.

Very rare indeed...and not easily acquired but it can be. I'm not as sold as some of you that MJ will be the QB...I am sure that there will be open competition and we will have a good to great QB. The question is whether we will need a game-breaker at QB or if a game-manager who can get the ball to the game breakers is what CNS will opt for. Going to be interesting...
 
I can’t even give a definitive answer. What I can say though is that quarterback battle is going to be ***INTENSE*** Probably more so than any other moment during the Saban era.
