I read the first 5-6 posts of this thread before deciding there was no need to keep going.

Nick Saban will go out on top, with another national championship under his belt. Only time will tell how many titles that will ultimately be. When Saban's story is written, there will be no chapter about a slow decline.

Whenever he goes, unless it is health-related it will be on his terms and not something I think that we will be able to predict. I look forward to many more years and this is not something that I spend any time thinking about.

I've a Eugene, Oregon buddy who is a lifelong Washington Huskies fan (I've mentioned him here a hundred times). He's said this more than once lately.

Despite:
- all the injuries
- all the losses to the NFL
- the defense not being what we're used to seeing (because of the above)
- the Tua injury late leading to a backup against Auburn

.....Alabama was TWO PLAYS from making the playoff AGAIN.

"That ought to frighten the hell out of people."

Just his two cents worth.

Sadly, Saban will retire at some point. He won't be fired and it's unlikely he takes another job at this point in his career.

So here are some things to ponder:

How long away is his retirement?

Will it be preceded by a slow decline?

Does the fanbase see it coming or does it come out of nowhere?

Who is the 1st call as his replacement? Who is the 2nd?

I'm not suggesting he should retire or expecting it. If you can't entertain the thought, please move along.

When he's ready, can he be the one naming his replacement?

If Kiffin tried to hire Sark, can Coach Saban trump that by RETIRING and recommending Sark to replace him (Saban) as HC?

Can't you just see Ole Sis with Kiffin vs Bama and Sark?

If Saban retired this year and he could name his replacement for the AD, who would that be? Should the new coach be an OFFENSIVE expert or a DEFENSIVE guru?

With all that said, I think Coach Saban can be EFFECTIVE/PRODUCTIVE with The PROCESS until he's 75! I'm in that neighborhood and feel that I could be EFFECTIVE/PRODUCTIVE until at least that age. Now, I think Tide-HSV could be tooooooo old. Ha! Ha! Ha!

Idk, but I do know this, unless Alabama wants what happened From 1983-2006 happen again, make the mistake of looking for a Coach Saban clone or a former Saban assistant. To me it wouldn’t be fair to them or the university because actual results won’t meet expectations. Granted, the first hire after Saban will catch all the hell from everywhere, I foresee a small time of wandering in the wilderness until Bama can find the next generational coach that can match the level of success of their predecessors

Thought CGS did a pretty good job. He was not the Bear or CNS but most schools would love to have his record. "Gene Stallings coached at the University of Alabama for seven seasons from 1990-1996 and led the Tide to an undefeated season and national championship in 1992. He amassed an impressive 70-16-1 record in Tuscaloosa and went 5-1 in six bowl games during that time."

I think he'll step down when he feels that he can no longer coach up to his own standard. That may be reflected in recruiting rankings or losses, or it may be something more intangible that he recognizes in himself before we see a measurable drop off. But that day is not near. I have a feeling that we are going to bounce back and dominate the SEC again over the next 2-4 years. Beyond that, who knows. Hopefully another ten years or more, but God and the gene pool will have a lot to say about that.

As for who replaces him, if it was tomorrow I think it would be Dabo's job if he wants it. My guess is he doesn't. No obvious second choice currently, but I think there are only a small handful of coaches who wouldn't jump at this job if offered. I'd love to see us interview Orgeron just to drive the Whoers crazy.;)If its several years out, and a Saban protege other than Kirby or Jimbo has established himself, I think that guy goes to the top of the list. That includes Pruitt. If he is able to win at Tennessee with all the adversity he faces there, why wouldn't he be a strong candidate to succeed Saban?

and that was in the era of the 11 game regular season.

You’re right. It’s a shame he was sandwiched in the middle of those years

I could see Perkins coming back as caretaker coach and to embellish his bonafides ever after as "the man who replaced the man...(insert two decades worth of replacing here)...who replaced the man again."

Nah, just trying out the blue font on the new ride as it's been "untested" up to this point as best I can discern.

I hate these threads yet find myself bumping this tired old subject to the top with my reply. And leave it to Jeff to post it...and I say that with all the love in my heart. Let us pray that Nick stays healthy and full of fire because when he goes we will see a sure and steady decline. That will be the end of this dynasty for at least a decade or so.

There's no way to know that.
