Game Thread: CFP Semi #2 | Clemson vs OSU (8p | ESPN)

Let's think about this logically. If the replay refs are correct in their overturn of that catch and fumble, then the WR could have run in a line backwards all the way out of the end zone and it would have been an incomplete pass. He possessed the ball, took three steps, and had it stripped away. How many steps does one have to take before the "football move" has been established?

This is one of the most egregious calls in the history of the game with a title on the line. This is worse than the no-PI call in the New Orleans/LA Rams game last year.

On a related but different note: Let’s compare our defense to Clemson’s and OSU’s. After a long series of top-ranked recruiting classes, we don’t have a single player who would start on either of those teams.

Injuries? Early departures? Sure. But that doesn’t fully explain the gap that has so quickly developed. Seems like recruiting misses and quality of coaching must be considered. Our level of play has dropped like a stone after Pruitt.

I stated some concerns with Young’s effort in this game at halftime. His production was - for the third straight game - not visible on the stat line. Look, I get that sometimes a talent like Chase Young plays a decoy game to work other folks open but they clearly needed him to give a little more direct production in the 2nd half. They lost, so everyone on the field could’ve given more...not a novel idea or incrimination on Young.

More interesting is that other than the Penn State game - who I think Memphis demonstrated is a very poor pass-pro OL - that Young was basically statistically invisible. Michigan contained him. Wisconsin did the same in the rematch after he wrecked them in the regular season. Clemson didn’t let him take over the game either.

Clearly he should go pro but I think the #1 pick is going to be as easy as the Heisman pick. I’m sure the Bengals will play coy but Burrow is going #1 unless Clemson Scarbough’d his ass in two weeks.

Bo Davis getting fired due to lying to the NCAA about a minor impressible contact issue is probably the low key major reason for the decline. He’s one of the few DL coaches we’ve had that can recruit and coach. I’ve belabored the lack of development on our DL, specifically Raekwon Davis who at worst should’ve ended up like A’Shawn Robinson or Jesse Williams. Also, we’ve simply missed on some of our top targets on the DL. We didn’t have someone in the wings waiting to take the mantle left by the line of Jon Allen - Da‘Ron Payne - Quinnen Williams. I suppose Davis ought to have been that man but he didn’t develop a lick in his time here.

From the article:
“Sometimes as coaches,” Golding said, “we can think too much and think we’re too damn smart at times.”

And sometimes you have to keep it simple when complexity once ruled Alabama’s defense.

“If you can’t execute it,” Golding said, “it doesn’t matter the call.”
If you dumb the defense down and the players still cannot execute the defensive calls - well, week 1 that is a learning curve, week 12 that is a coaching problem.

The lack of depth and quality on the DL right now is so low that I fear it may take 2-3 years before we see a great unit again. And that assumes that we’re hitting on recruiting and not losing folks to between-the-ears problems (Anoma and Alfano).

We sorta realized we needed to change body types in 2012 but it took until 2015 for it to come to fruition with a high sack total unit. I wonder if it will be same with this abysmal run on talent acquisition/retention.

LOL - you need to ask for a job in the Cleveland front office. You would fit right in there with your evaluations.
He probably graded out better than his stat line. I said that in so many words. Problem is that when 2 of your 3 best players are dinged up, you need the 3rd to show out and he just couldn’t. He’s playing good competition and they have done a better job of making his angles for pursuit on the QB be as hard as possible.

I don’t think he’s the #1 pick though but he shouldn’t be hurting for money in April.

Sorry about the loss B1GTide, I really wanted OSU to win it all. I think that was a bad call on the fumble.

I agree with the SEC Ref's on the TARGETING, but NOT the FUMBLE and tOSU score. The receiver had the ball in his hands securely. He never brought it to his body, but you could tell he had the ball long enough that that was a strip and FUMBLE. I wasn't sure if the Clemson QB would get up after being TARGETED PLUS mauled by #2 on the same play.

UM, Wisconsin and Clemson all decided that they would not let Young beat them. They all put together blocking schemes and game plans to accomplish that. It killed his stat line, but it actually made the rest of our d-line better because they were placing so much emphasis on Young.

It is not Young's fault that no one else on our d-line could get the job done against Clemson like they did against UM and Wisconsin. I have said all season that our weakness is a lack of depth. That became clear when Dobbins got hurt, and it was also made clear when Young was effectively removed from the game.

I have to pull for Clemson. I’d rather LSU miss the ring and let them wallow in misery.

If they win it, that just creates more drama in the immediate family.

Cajun, do you really want to hear constantly about that Clemson DYNASTY? Well, it is hard to pull for either of these two teams.

If Dobbins doesn’t get hurt, I think he sets a bowl game rushing record. LSU gotta be licking their lips to get after a defense that has to blitz to get the ball out of the QB’s hands and can’t really defend the run well against a quality OL.

I think LSU is gonna absolutely torch Clemson’s D. Burrow is going to beat their blitzes up and their backs will pop a few big runs that keeps them off-balance.

I’d rather there be Bama vs Clemson year in and out. If you bring others into the fold it just spreads out the praise and talent.

I’ll take the other power in College Football not being in my own division. Any. Day. Of. The. Week :)

The 2 penalties that renewed Clemson drives and the red zone FGs killed OSU. They outplayed Clemson for much of this game, but made some key mistakes at the exact wrong times. This is one they will always look back on with regret, cause they shoulda won this game.

Power? It is one year. One incredible year, but one year. Let's see how they do without Burrow next year before we anoint them the next "dynasty".

Exactly. Which is all the more reason to pull against LSU. Don’t give them any reason to build confidence.
