Just imagine if we didn’t have Pete Golding ?here is some scary info , this is from a BOL post. I heard the info this morning from Paul Finebaum on Get Up! I can’t recall any team dominating a sport as long has Nick Saban has dominated CFB . TRUE DOMINATION-
Only 6 SEC teams have played a game while ranked #1 in the AP
Alabama: 111 games, 98-13 (.883)
All other SEC teams: 99 games, 84-15 (.848)
There have been 88 polls with a unanimous #1. Alabama has done it 28 times (26 times since 2012, 9 times in 2018 and 5 times in 2020). The next most is Ohio St and Miami with 8 times each.
Of course the streak at #1 is 14 years and counting, next is Miami with 7 and Clemson with 6
Alabama holds the record for consecutive appearances in the Top 5 - 68 weeks (2015-2019) and have an active streak of 94 weeks in the Top 10. (tied with Clemson)
Since 2007 - Alabama has been in the AP Poll 219 times (95.2% of the polls) with an average ranking of 3.2 (Oklahoma is second with 217 (94.3%) and 9.2 average ranking.
186 times in the top 5 (80.9%) - Next Ohio St: 112 (48.7%)
206 times in the Top 10 (89.6%) - Next Ohio St: 178 (77.4%)
Ranked #1 - 100 times (43.5%) - Next LSU: 24 (10.4)
Finally Alabama has held either the #1 or #2 spot 150 times in the last 230 polls. That's 65.2% of all the polls.

I'm still not yet sold TBH.I read an article that had Golding rated as a top 5 defensive coordinator in college football.
This year is the "put up or shut up" year. With this much talent and experience, he needs to get it done. I think that he will. I would not have said that a year ago.I'm still not yet sold TBH.
He has as much if not more talent than any DC in the country and last year Alabama was ranked....
32nd in Total Defense
13th in Scoring Defense
Alabama just happened to have the Greatest Offense in CFB history so anything happening on Defense is glossed over and forgotten.
I'm not saying Golding won't eventually prove to be a Top 5 guy..... but he's not there yet by a long shot.

More offensive drives result in more defensive drives. That causes more plays for the other team. More yards. More points.I'm still not yet sold TBH.

I'll let Saban decide. Let's hope we don't have to cross that bridge. What should happen if he doesn't?
If I’m thinking of the same article, they actually had him at #1.I read an article that had Golding rated as a top 5 defensive coordinator in college football.

Same. I’m beginning to come around to Golding, but this year is gonna make or break him IMO.*nervously raises hand*
That's just a flowery yet generic sounding excuse imo....More offensive drives result in more defensive drives. That causes more plays for the other team. More yards. More points.
I think that it depends on how that elite offense plays. Last year's Alabama offense was the best ever. Your average time of possession was only 30:55. Why? Because you had a balanced offense than ran the ball and used the clock. You controlled the game on offense. That allowed the defense to rest adequately.I do not believe it is possible to have an elite defense and an elite offense on the same team, if elite offense is defined by what we currently run. Which is throwing it down the field and running a good portion of HUNH.
Your defense will continually be placed at a disadvantage in TOP, and they will wear down quicker and start to give up plays they would normally stop. But when you've got a 31 point lead, or the opposing defense has never been able to stop your offense (see Ole Miss) then giving up plays later in the game simply doesn't matter anymore.
I agree we can be better. But I don't see a defense rated in the top 10 of total defense anymore as long as we're running the style of offense we are running.
It's not just about rest. It's about exposure.I think that it depends on how that elite offense plays. Last year's Alabama offense was the best ever. Your average time of possession was only 30:55. A good point. Another point, though - a great offense doesn't just put pressure on the opposing defense, it also puts pressure on the opposing offense. Alabama played in a few games last year in which the opposing offense started out playing well, but because Alabama scored a TD every time you touched the ball, they felt pressured to make the same kind of plays - to score on every drive. That kind of pressure helps the defense. It's not just about rest. It's about exposure.
The more cracks an offense has on an opposing defense, the more vulnerabilities it can find and exploit.
More scoring drives = more drives for the opposing offense.
Yes, we can improve. No, you are not going to see the defenses of the first half of the Nick Saban era again. I don't care who the DC is.
